My family is heading to Europe in May. They are doing Rome, Florence, and Paris over 10 days.I want to go with them and my gf, but I do not really want to be with my entire family for the whole trip, and I have little interest in Florence (unless you guys can convince me otherwise).So I was thinking that perhaps I travel with the family to Rome and stay there 3 nights and then when they head to Florence, I go to the South of France with my lady so we can enjoy beaches and whatever the hell else is there. (this is where you come in). Then I can meet back with my family in Paris for the last 2 nights of the trip or so.Have and FBGs been to South of France? What's it like? How does my plan sound?

Paris is a whole trip in itself and that's way too much to try to see in 10 days. Tell your family to just stick to Italy this trip.

Agree and disagree. Europe is a long ways away for most- and it's worth taking in as much as possible. 3 nights per city sounds reasonable, even if not ideal.

My favorite city in Spain is Madrid but lots of people skip it since it is out of the way if you are doing a Mediterian based trip. However, you can't miss all of Spain on a trip like that so Barcelona is a good substitute. I was back there this summer after having not been there in a decade and still enjoyed the city.

Don't go anywhere that isn't worth staying for a few days at least. You can spend half your time traveling if you try to go to too many places.

If travelling from Italy I would recommend:Monaco (25%) --> Nice (15%) --> Cannes (60%)Not sure how long you are going, I had the most fun in Cannes, best beaches etc. Never really visited Nice, just traveled through there. Monaco is pretty cool to check out but it is tiny. Last time I was there the Grand Prix was going on.Provence is pretty cool, your girl might like it, walled city, old France type tourist stuff if you are into that.

We are flying into Milan and I think we'll be staying in Monaco for 5 nights and then 5 nights in Florence. We have a car for the trip so we plan on driving quite a bit.By the way, anyone know a decent, cheap place to stay near the Milan airport? Looks like something big is going on in Milan that has a lot of places booked and we need a hotel near the airport the night before (April 13) we fly back.

Paris is a whole trip in itself and that's way too much to try to see in 10 days. Tell your family to just stick to Italy this trip.

Skip Paris, take the 52 minute train ride to Champagne region, visit the houses where winegrowers and co-operatives who not only welcome visitors but speak English!, drink a lot of bubbles, drunken train ride back, and get the family to pick you up.Find the growers who grow the grapes and make their own champagne. If you're gonna spend money on a bottle of the real stuff, support the farmer fizz

Changed the plan so we are skipping Monaco and spending longer in Florence (9 nights) so we can do day trips around there. We're renting the car the entire trip so the parking fees (50 EUR??) and tolls weren't going to make it worth it. We are also going to spend a couple of nights in Venice.

May is the wrong time for beaches. Monaco is hoity toity the casinos are there but unles you're a James bond type, aka you packed a pimp suit, forget it. The things about Europe that bring me the most Joy, are the tiny little towns that I end up visiting. Often times by accident.

One of my favorite memories from my trip to France last summer is the day after the culmination of my trip, which was centered round the tour de france. We were driving down from the pryenees, and a MASSIVE lightning/thunder/rain storm hit. My wife and I holed up in a tiny bar in a town, whose name I don't remember, hung out with the owner, drank beer and ate fabulous little local delicacies, shot the #### in spanglofranoanglais, and had the time of our lives.

So.....to sum it up, start the trip with the family, and then do your own thing. If that's big cites, museums, art, history, etc. Then go do that. If your thing is low key mellow "experience the native culture" then just let your car go where it will, be open to meeting people and you'll have a great time.

I'm thinking the length of the trip will be something like 10 days. Is that enough time?

I definitely want to do Rome for at least 3 days and then something like Ischia, Posatano, to relax etc. for the remainder.

My goals are to see and take in much of the history, architecture and innovation of ancient Rome and also to experience Italian culture and cuisine (although I have an aversion to seafood). I do not want to do like a resort type thing really.

Between Rome, Florence and Venice, that's going to be a full 10 days. Or bag Venice (which really is worth seeing) and put the time into Tuscany (also worth seeing) or Cinque Terre or Amalfi Coast or... soooooo much to see. You're going to miss stuff no matter what you do, but you're in a win/win with getting to see amazing things with 10 days instead of a few.

Depends on where you want to go in Rhone. Southern Rhone which is a lot like Provenance is definately doabble. Where did you think you would set up base?

Nice is nice but wholley molley that is a scene. Jaw dropping beauty & wealth, great high end shopping. I'd recommend a short trip to Villafrance - nothing special, just a sleepy village, but it's a nice downtime laid back place, go there for lunch. You'll love Monaco.

Nice is nice but wholley molley that is a scene. Jaw dropping beauty & wealth, great high end shopping. I'd recommend a short trip to Villafrance - nothing special, just a sleepy village, but it's a nice downtime laid back place, go there for lunch. You'll love Monaco.

fyi, nimes and pont du gard are fairly well isolated from eachother.

Day trips out of Nice are Grasse and Biot.

I would do evenings in Antibes and Cannes. Monte Carlo is a meh. Only if you are in to the TMZ lifestyle or something like that.

Definitely Avignon over Marseilles. And Arles is pretty, albeit not as spectacular - they have (non-lethal) bullfights in a real Roman coliseum, and it's one of the painting sites for Van Gogh.

As a side fyi there are also some great wineries/vinyards/chateaus over there, including Chateau Neuf de Pape; those can be fun, needless to say you can also get loaded. The countryside is beautiful.

Also when in that area seek out caves (pronounced "cahve") - these are wine cellars in towns and outside of towns where wine stock is kept; ask the locals they know the good one or two that are best and go in and enjoy, typically the owner is a local guy who will help you gain some "experience" in the tasting of the local stuff and you can also get wineskins or bottles to go.

Was in France over New Years for a wedding. We took a train from Paris to Marseilles, then took the train along the coast from Marseilles to Toulon, where the wedding was. Wow, that is some beautiful country. Mountains on one side and amazing coastline on the other. We were in Toulon for just a couple days, but the people, culture, scenery were all just fantastic.

Wife, friend and his wife decided to do Paris and French Riviera in a summer or 2. Going to do June to avoid the madness. Thinking Nice but worried it might be too over the top. Anyone ever been to Menton, Toulon or Sainte Maxime?

Was in France over New Years for a wedding. We took a train from Paris to Marseilles, then took the train along the coast from Marseilles to Toulon, where the wedding was.
