SP Mock Invitational--5th round? Uh huh....5th round...... (2 Viewers)

Chiefs took Austin Johnson.

He sent me a list, I forgot.  Bad commish, very bad commish.

I'm giddy as a school girl. Who'd have thought we'd already be here so close to my second round pick? I'd like to thank my family, my 3 wonderful boys and of course the Academy for the nomination. Good night and god bless.

My first pick was Sunday at 5pm on page 7, so it looks like I shouldn't have made the trade down on my 3rd rounder as I don't think I'll be picking again. Damn you Biabreakable, that was your move all along!

2.60 the Patriots select Leonte Carroo, WR Rutgers

2.61 the Patriots select Kyler Fackrell, EDGE Utah ST

Not much of a change here. Flipping Fackrell and Scoobs. Fackrell lasted way too long last mock. Busy at work or I'd have more to say.

It's hard for me to think any of the WRs available are a better fit then Carroo, and I might be biased but I'm not a Henry fan, there are a ton of guys who will be there in the 3rd I would rather have.

Damn it, I was way off. I knew you wouldn't do Scooby and I thought you would go someone other than Carroo.

Fackrell won't have lasted past the Ravens in this mock.

No need to wait, I want to get this moving.

2.62 Carolina Panthers select Xavien Howard, CB, Baylor

I liked Burns, but Howard projects better than him in zone coverage, which we run. Howard also really improved on his combine numbers (4.41 and 38.5 vert vs. 4.58 and 33 vert) at his pro-day closer to where some folks thought he would run.

2.63 - Denver Broncos - Derrick Henry, RB - Alabama

Let's just for fun say that Elway hates the remaining QBs. Cook's sub-60% completion rate wouldn't thrill me either. I think he's Jake Locker 2.0.

I know they signed CJA to a big contract but he hasn't yet made it through a season healthy. And Hillman has really shown little.

Henry fits the Kubiak scheme perfectly, IMO. A one two punch like this would allow the Broncos to grind out another successful season until a better QB fix reveals itself.

I love this fit and pick.

I don't think Cook's necessarily the answer for the Broncos, either, but if the draft actually falls this way on Friday here's how I expect Elway to be delivering pick #63 to the podium:

I would be shocked if only 3 QBs went in the first 2 rounds this weekend!

Also, kind of wish I went Laquon and Artie Burns instead of WJIII and Mike Thomas.  Shucks.

I think you did it right. I thought about Burns, but I had Howard higher for the Panthers.

You're obviously not in the ballpark of my manlove for Karl Joseph, or you think Mitchell and the rest of the crap we call safeties are adequate?

THIRD ROUND
2(65) Browns

With the 51st pick in the draft the NYJets select Yannick Ngakoue, OLB Maryland.

I got this guy in the third round the last mock, but I don't think he falls that far again and I still think he's good value here and fills a desperate edge rusher need.
I thought this guy was only worth a 3-4th round pick, but after watching more tape I think he probably goes in the 2nd.  And I hope it's to the Steelers, not the Jets!

FWIW I watched a couple games of this Burns guy. Not sure why people would want him honestly. He does not seem that good at football.

Awesome measurables and athlete.  Has been a track star his whole career and in doing so has missed out on a lot of weightlifting and positional coaching.  He is a project player but one with natural skills and talent that are elite.  Think Jamal Charles.  Was not a highly regarded RB coming out but he had not dedicated himself fully to football.  After two years of full season finishing he turned into a monster.

Haven't watched him. Fill me in.
He plays a lot of off coverage and he cant stay with guys. Not much support in run defense either as he gets easily blocked. WR blocking him in the end zone while a RB saunters for about 20 yards and a TD. Meanwhile he is still getting blocked in the end zone.

That was about enough for me.

He's tall, agile, and lightning-fast. Can't teach any of that. And every NFL GM, HC, and position coach thinks they can take a guy with the right measurables and "coach him up" into an All-Pro.

I watch a lot of ACC football and his technique is frankly awful - he loves to play off the ball and bait opposing QBs into throws, knowing he can rely on his absurd closing speed and length to make the play, and that kind of #### ain't gonna fly in the NFL. But I'm rooting for the kid purely from a human interest perspective (Google him if you haven't heard the story), and it's entirely possible we'll all look back in 3-4 years and wonder how once again a team like Seattle found a guy in the bottom of the 3rd and turned him into an all-world cover corner.

I agree.  I'm of the sort that much prefers a football player to an athlete that ego driven coaches think they can mold into a dominant football player.

3.1 The Tennessee Titans select Artie Burns, CB, The U

Glad to pick a guy here that I gave thought to in the mid 2nd. He is raw but on the Titans he won't be pressed into service immediately but gives the team an amazing 6'0, 200lb athlete at CB.

1.15 Reggie Ragland, LB

2.33 Andrew Billings, NT

2.43 Shon Coleman, OT

2.45 Hunter Henry, TE

3.64 Artie Burns, CB

That's a nice haul so far thanks to the Rams.

With the first pick of the THIRD ROUND

Pick #65 the Cleveland Browns select:  Charone Peake WR  6'2"    209    Clemson

Wanted Burns, not high on Conor Cook.

I like Charone.  He tested nearly identical to Josh Gordon.  Had a knee issue that slowed down his development IMHO so he's raw but a good character guy who can get deep.  So he fits in now with RG III and he should improve and fit with any rookie QB taken next year.

Outside receiver is a big need as the current WR mix on the team shows a ton of small slot receivers so I don't mind doubling up on outside WRs with the 2nd and 3rd round  picks.

Updated picks heading into the third round:

23(54) Bears (from Vikings) -- Kendall Fuller
24(55) Bengals -- Deion Jones
25(56) Seahawks 2.56 Seattle Seahawks select G/C JOSHUA GARNETT Stanford.
26(57) Packers Booker, Devontae RB 5'11" 219 Utah 5.7
27(58) Steelers 2.58 - Michael Thomas, WR, Ohio St.
28(59) Chiefs 2.59 Chiefs select NT AUSTIN  JOHNSON PENN ST.
29(60) Patriots Leonte Carroo, WR Rutgers
30(61) Patriots (From Cardinals) Kyler Fackrell, EDGE Utah ST
31(62) Panthers 2.62 Carolina Panthers select Xavien Howard, CB, Baylor
32(63) Broncos 2.63 - Denver Broncos - Derrick Henry, RB - Alabama
1(64) Titans CB Artie Burns, Miami

THIRD ROUND
2(65) Browns WR Charone Peake, Clemson

3(66) Chargers
4(67) Cowboys
5(68) 49ers
6(69) Jaguars
7(70) Ravens
8(71) Ravens (from Giants)
9(72) Vikings (from Bears)
10(73) Dolphins
11(74) Buccaneers
12(75) Raiders
13(76) Titans (From Rams)
14(77) Browns (From Eagles through Lions)

Might be a little high for Peake, but I think you are about to start a WR run. As Andy said, there are a lot of nice WRs in round 3+. I couldn't pass up Coleman when all the CBs/DEs were gone and he was BPA, but with an extra 4th now, probably will grab another.

Actually I mixed Burns up with another cornerback who shall remain unnamed and hopefully I never consider again.

Burns is actually more physical than that. I just watched a few too many players over the past day or so.

:shakeshead:
Ok, yeah that's probably a stretch.  But we could use a good OLB and I think that Ngakoue will become one.

And I like, but don't love, Karl Joseph.  I think he's a very solid safety in the 32-40 range, but definitely a reach at 25 coming off a torn ACL.  We have no guarantee that he'll regain all the skills he previously had.  My ideal draft is us trading down to 31 or 32 so the Broncos/Browns can reach on a QB (which I doubt happens).  We could pick up an extra 3rd and still grab Joseph or a CB.

If we grab Burns in the first I will be very, very sad (that's what all the NFL.com gurus think will happen).

This draft would be phenomenal for the Titans (with what we know now).  They get Mariota protection and a weapon, and solidify the center of their defense and add secondary help.  Yikes.

I wanted Burns.  He got taken right before my pick.  Artie has length, speed,  and athleticism.  Those are the traits NFL DB coaches crave.  He gets knocked for poor technique but he was in spring track practices so he missed a lot of coaching time in the spring since he was/is a championship hurdler.  I think he has a lot of room to improve and hasn't scratched his potential.  He's a boom/bust guy but I'll gamble with that  sort of upside at this point in the draft since he has 1st round potential.

I watched these two cutups of him.

He does have some ball skills getting an interception in each of these two games. He gets to come on the blitz a couple times and generally he gets there but can't quite finish. Poor tackling technique on a couple other runs where I think he had good pursuit angle and he gets to the ball, just doesn't always tackle well to finish the play. He can hit hard some times.

He looks really lost once the WR gets him turned around in his backpedal. He seems to lose his balance or his footwork gets tangled up when he tries to turn and go.

At least he doesn't get blocked in the end zone for like 6 seconds while a RB takes their sweet time to score.

A little propaganda never hurts ;)

So let me get this straight. . .  You champion for the Steelers spending an upper round pick on Jaylon Smith with a horrendous knee injury involving nerve damage that is not even close to fully recovered 6 months later, but a simple ACL to a guy who was rated highly pre-injury for many reasons other than his athleticism is now too risky?

3.67 Dallas Cowboys select Carl Nassib, DE, Penn St.

Carl has blood like spring water, never even had a cigarette in his life.

Get it, @5Rings

Phenomenal high upside athlete with the potential to be a WR1, downside is a slot WR / gadget player.  BPA meets need.
