St. Louis Offense (1 Viewer)

I still can't believe that St. Louis has yet to give Jackson 25 carries this season. Sunday I thought the streak was over. All week they talked about a recommitment to the run. They gave Jackson 18 carries in the 1st half, controlled the clock and were winning. I thought for sure he would get 7 carries in the 2nd half but NO, 5 carries in the 2nd half. SF caught up and took the lead.

All year I have listened to people say that Jackson has gotten plenty of carries but after last nights performance by Alexander and LJ's 39 carry performance earlier this year I have to wonder, will Jackson ever get at least 25 carries?

I feel like Jackson dominated the 1st half but the coaching staff feels they have to please everyone on the team, so they call passing plays when it is not needed. I can understand throwing the ball more but when Jackson has more than 4ypc how can you justify only running him 5 times in the second half with his success in the 1st half?

Do you ever see Jackson being a 25 to 30 carry a game guy?

the fact that hes doing the things hes doing with the crackteam of coaches calling the plays is absurd.

he is becoming really involved in the passing game which is great but i agree he has to be getting at least 23+ carries a game.

i really dont know how anyone can complain about his involvement in the offense. He is the centerpiece of their offense every single week. Sure, he could get a few more carries, but I'll gladly take games where he has 13 catches and 9 catches over a game where they give him 3 more carries. Especially in PPR leagues. Now if you wanna talk about him getting the ball inside the ten more, thats another story......

I think you're hung up on a number. How many guys are 25-30 carry guys? LJ is averaging 25 per and that's it. Here's his game log:

wk1 - 22

wk2 - 22

wk3 - 24

wk4 - 22

wk5 - 23

wk6 - 20

wk8 - 18

wk9 - 19

wk10-18

wk11- 7

wk12-23

That's pretty consistently a good amount of carries, with wk11 as the aberration. Furthermore, if the Rams were better, he'd probably get more carries at the ends of games and get you closer to your magical number. He has 22-24 carries in all of their Ws.

He's averaging about 20 carries + 6 receptions a game right now. Can't you be happy with that?

And to add to my last post:

Jackson ranks 9th in the league in carries per game (behind LJ, SA, Taylor, TJones, RJ, LT2, Barber, James).

Jackson ranks 4th in touches per game (behind LJ, Taylor, SA).

It just seems like picking nits to be complaining about this.

Yes you would think but in a couple of games this year they have had the lead in the 4th quarter but passed instead of running the ball. Up 5 with less than 5 minutes to play you would think they would run but instead they go inc. pass, inc. pass, inc. pass, punt and only use 45 seconds off the clock rather than running 3 times. I am convinced that the coaching staff is more concerned with making everyone happy rather than winning football games. When the game is in hand there is no reason to be throwing the ball, with the lead with less than 5 minutes to play. For one, Bulger is an overrated QB. Putting the ball in his hands is risky. Im just a St. Louis fan who expected more from their offense and team in general. I don't think they are using their players to their full potential. After the game SJAX was on ESPN radio and was asked what the Rams need to do in order to continue to win. He replied "give me the ball". There is no excuse for him to only get 5 carries in the second half after the 1st half he had and the way the team played in general. Because of his success running they were able to control the ball and flow of the game. When they took it away from him they almost cost themselves the game. Just because he gets 20-24 carries a game doesn't mean they are using him correctly. As a team maybe they do need to give him the ball 30+times a game in order to cut down on turnovers and control the clock more. Who knows? We never will because they will never give him that many carries. I'm not even going to go into the red zone and how they use him.

P.S. LJ and SJAX are both averaging 4.3 ypc yet LJ has 64 more carries this year. 64 x 4.3= 275 additional yds which would move him to #1 in the league in rushing and more importantly probably give them at least 1 more W. The only difference between these 2 players in K|C knows what to do with premier RB.

the most important thing is of course how he is used in the RZ, their red zone play calling is awful.. run pass pass fg or pass pass pass or pass run pass

i cant recall many times when they forced teams to stop him 2 or 3 times from within the 5

he bailed them out plenty against SF, hopefully they give him some more RZ love

It's a shame with a stud like that that he only sees 1 carry if they are on the 9 or 10 yd line. Chances are he wont rush it in from 9 or 10 out, but thats the only chance he gets. Then they pass, pass, FG. The good teams run it 3, sometimes 4 times inside the 10. Especially when you have a back as big as SJAX, who is averaging 4ypc.

Furthermore,If you look at the 6 guys in front of SJAX this year in carries per game. I don't think it's a coincidence that 5 of the 6 will be going to the playoffs this year while the Rams sit at home and wonder why they didn't make it.

This is sorta funny since there was another thread around here in the last few days started by someone complaining that KC may not know what to do because they're giving LJ too many carries.I think you're wrong about this running out the clock thing. It's rare that the Rams are running out a lead that's even a full TD. In these situations, mostly it's important to hang onto the ball and get some first downs - especially because their defense is poor so the pin em and hold em strategy works not so well. So if they find themselves in a passing down they have to pass. For instance, here's a play-by-play from the Arizona game earlier in the year. In the 4th Q, Jackson rushed 4 times for -1 yards and in between Arizona held onto the ball for 8 minutes. It's pretty difficult to just say presto and give Jackson 25 carries when they're not getting yards to sustain drives and their defense can't get off the field. I wonder if you could tell me what you would do differently.

Are you kidding me? This is exactly what I am talking about. Look at the top, last play of the 3rd going into the 4th quarter. They run Jackson they get the 1st downs and move the chains. New set of downs what do they do? Definatley not run like they should.1st-10, STL47 14:15 M. Bulger incomplete pass to the right

1st and 10 with the lead what do they do?? Pass, why? When your attempting to control the game and the clock you should not be starting your downs with pass plays, plain and simple!

Next possession:

1st-10, STL34 2:03 M. Bulger rushed up the middle for no gain. M. Bulger fumbled. A. Smith recovered fumble

This was not a rush up the middle. It was 1st down and Bulger dropping back to pass again on 1st down with 2 MINUTES LEFT!| Are you kidding me!!

If not for Warner fumbling the ball inside the 20 at the very end St. Louis loses this game all because of stupid play calling. Like I said before, I think it is the coaching staff trying to please everyone rather than attempting to win games. If you want to win the game you do what you need to do to win. 2 minutes left with the lead and 1st down, you DONT need to throw!!

He doesn't get 25+CARRIES a game, big difference. When passing a lot can go wrong with the offense and usually does (look at Bulger's sack total and turnovers this year). The plays in which he does get receptions, those plays aren't designed for him. Most the time he is Bulger's 3rd option. When it's a rushing play the chances of a turnover are minimal compared to Bulgers frequency of turning the ball over, whether it be fumbling b/c of a sack or him throwing an int.My point all along has been just b/c he sees the ball 20 times a game doesn't mean they are doing the right thing and should give Bulger the opportunity to throw the ball. The rams need to do what it takes to win, and in my opinion they need to run the ball more.Perfect example will be this week against Arizona. Here is what Arizona has given up on the road in their past 5 road games:@MIN 273 passing, 3 TD pass allowed, 1 rush TD allowed (150+ rush yards)@GB 180 passing, 1 TD pass allowed, 3 rush TD allowed@OAK 263 passing, 1 TD pass allowed, 1 rush TD allowed (200+ rush yards)@ATL 153 passing, 0 TD pass allowed, 1 rush TD allowed (250+ rush yards)@SEA 221 passing, 1 TD pass allowed, 2 rush TD allowed (140+ rush yards)All of the teams listed above DONT have a back of SJAX caliber, yet all were able to successfully run the ball and put up HUGE numbers against Arizona. I ask you, what do you think the stat line should look like this week? Knowing what you know about Arizonas inability to stop the run. SJAX SHOULD get more than 25 carries. Will he?? Probably not! I think that even though they could have success on the ground they will still let Bulger throw 35 to 40 times in this game. He will get sacked about 3 times and probably have an int. In my opinion, all b/c they want to keep everyone happy.

Jim Haslett is a magician. Even as Defensive Coordinator, he has somehow managed to turn the 2006 Rams offense into a 2003-2005 version of the Saints. Predictable, poor play-calling, inability to get the ball in the end zone.

But North, just looking at the most recent 3, those teams all got out to big leads with a mixed to actually pass-heavy ratio. And then, AFTER getting those big leads, were able to pile on those last rushing carries you wish Jackson would get.Minnesota started off by getting Taylor 7 carries on their 1st drive. After that, they call 43 pass plays to 16 rush plays and get out to a 31-13 lead. (This is similar to Linehan's playcalling last week: establish the run early and then go to the passing game.) AND THEN they run out the clock.Green Bay runs a perfect 50/50 mix until they get ahead 21-0. AND THEN they run out the clock in the 2nd half.Oakland passed 62% of the time until their last 2 drives of the 4th Q when ahead 22-9. AND THEN they run out the clock. The number of carries Jackson has in the boxscore is dependent on how much the Rams play with a lead.

So true. Don't forget, does not know how to use a running game formulated after 1990.
