Stafford vs Newton (1 Viewer)

Trying to separate these guys on my draft board. 10-team 2-QB league, all TD's count the same. Newton derived so much of his value from rushing stats last year, is 14 TDs really repeatable. Then again, he's a dual threat where Stafford only puts up numbers thru the air. Which would you take after Rodgers, Brady, Brees?

Stafford. Otherwise, Newton.

Newton..rushing and passing Td's..

Stafford - only once has he played a full 16 game schedule..not saying he's an injury risk, but that line allowed him to be sacked 36 times last season..does it happen again? can he stay healthy for another 16 games?

Newton is the real deal..Stafford is a big question mark IMO...I think the Lions overacheived last year, and with that, their numbers were inflated..I'm going against the grain,I'm sure a lot of people buy in to Stafford, I'm more of a Doubting Thomas.I'll believe it when I see it happen again..

While no one calls Newton and injury risk, and deservedly so because he is a 6-5 250 pound monster who hasn't been hurt, lets remember that he does run a lot and opens himself up for hits more than Stafford. Anyone can get hurt at anytime. There are tons of players that start off their career with loads of injuries, only to turn it around. We could easily see Newton play 10 games this year and Stafford play a full slate. While there is, on the surface, more risk in Stafford, I wouldn't let the injury perception change my mind. It can also depend on your settings. Stafford had 8 300 yard games and 2 more above 290. Newton had only 3 300 yard games, all in the first 4 games, and only one of 290 yard game. So in 300 yard bonus leagues (depending on your point system), Stafford will gain a good amount of points there. Also it is more likely Stafford has more big play (30+ yard) passes than Newton, and in long-td bonus leagues he gains more there. In 20 yard per point leagues, Stafford has the advantage there. Netwon's obvious advantage is in a no bonus, very basic league where it is 4 pts per passing td, 6 points per rushing td, 10 yards rushing per 1 point, and very little, if any, bonuses. Personally I'd go Stafford. If Steve Smith got hurt, the Panthers have very little behind him. If Calvin got hurt, Nate Burleson, Titus Young, and Pettigrew (plus Best out of backfield for however long he's alive) can still be somewhat serviceable.

Stafford and it's not even close.
:goodposting: That's not to say I don't like Newton a good bit as well. Stafford is just a better passer and long term, that is what matters most to me. Stafford also has the advantage of playing with the games best WR and it looks like that will be the case for several years to come. Det has great weapons behind Mega on top of that. Young is an up and coming game breaker, Pettigrew is a great TE and Broyles was drafted to fill the void of Burelson in 2013. The injury thing has been overdone. Stafford has shown elite ability every time he's taken the field, even in his rookie season. As it was pointed out, Newton could just as easily get injuried due to his rushing. In the end, I think in order for Newton to keep pace with Stafford in fantsy he needs to have abnormally high rushing numbers. I don't feel those rushing numbers are a) as reliable as passing and b) as sustainable as passing. Therefore, I take Stafford and don't look back.

I think it's clearly Stafford. Newton's numbers will certainly fall this year, as he won't get nearly as many rushing TDs. After the first two monster passing games last year, Newton only had one 300+ yd passing game the rest of the year.

Cam Newton - 2011 Passing Stats

Stafford easy. He was a #1 pick, protypical size, arguably the best arm in the league and has a 5k 40+ TD season under his belt before his 25th birthday. He still has room to improve. Oh he also has the best WR in the NFL and one of the better colllections of pass catchers around on a pass first offense. The only edge Cam has is rushing.

My leagues devalue yardage and give heavy bonuses for long TDs. Both of these guys actually get a lot of long TDs FWIW. I'd rather have Stafford in those leagues because of the different rules. In a traditional league I'm not sure which way I would go.

Having said that I wouldn't be surprised if Newton blew everyone away this year because of his nearly unique talent combined with an apparently strong personal drive/work ethic-he came to camp early with the rookies this year, for example.

Newton, and I'm a Stafford dynasty owner.

I'd trade Stafford for Newton straight up without hesitation.

Newton is a dual threat and Stafford has injury history.

This. If you look at Newton's numbers, he started strong and went south the whole year. No 300 yard passing games after week 4 and no 200 yard passing games after week 13. The other intreesting fact is that once they started ruinning the ball more, they started winning. He has only one 1 win when passing for over 250 yards so far.
