STAR WARS: EP 7 ***SPOILER ZONE*** - Go here if you've seen it (1 Viewer)

Question to those upset by the girl's abilities coming too quickly: Can't an awakening mean that something was asleep previously? Can't she have been trained already and it was wiped or buried somehow?

Finally, when was the actual awakening in the movie? I only saw it once, but was it when she touched the saber? thanks.
One common speculation is that she was trained by Luke and then when Luke lost Kylo, he panicked and mind wiped Rey and stored her away for her protection.
Because if anything says "protection", it's dumping a kid on a desolate planet where she's forced to scrounge for food on a daily basis.
We don't know the timeline of when her parents left her but from the flashbacks it looks like it could have been in the 15 year time frame. Whom ever left her might have left her in a better situation than we saw her 15 years later.

I doubt she was left by herself as a 5ish year old and was likely in the care of someone.

There might be some light parallels to Luke growing up on Tatooine and sending Rey some where similar. We don't know if all of Jakuu is desolate or only where Rey is now in the story line is desolate. Some parts of Tatooine looked just as bad.

I like how you guys have covered both angles.

We who are criticizing are simultaneously a) too analytical and can't sit back and enjoy and b) not analytical enough to "figure it out".

They showed her holding someoes hand who said something along the lines of "Come on, Girl." I assumed that was the junk trader.

It's the phantom menace defense. When we asked about the trade federation/blockade/politics we needed to be spoon fed but when we complained about the young Anakin and Jar Jar it was a film for children.

I assumed that too but if memory serves, JJ went out of his way to not show who she was left with or who left her. If she was left with the junk dealer, there would not have been any real reason to hide that fact.

I really hope to learn more about this in 8 or 9.

Incredibly dorky overuse of the word "canon" in here.
Exactly! Religious doctrine has ruined faith, and now it's ruining the greatest movie series ever. Hell exists because of people in this thread. Canon... for crying out loud... seriously?!?!?
Canon has been used to describe official vs. unofficial lore in fictional universes for awhile guys... like, decades.
Only to pacify the small percentage of fans who can't let their minds rest without answers to everything.

Sane people don't need canon to enjoy fictional stories.

I think there are plenty of legit things to criticize about the movie. Fischer's performance is beyond flat. Ford is a little spotty. Han's death is entirely telegraphed. There's alot of rehashed material.

I don't think it's legit to criticize the how someone learns to use the Force, i.e. magic. Nor do I think we're left with insufficient information. The basics are there. There are easy inferences that can fill in most of the blanks. And none of the things we're missing matter at all to the plot of this movie - finding Luke Skywalker.

We don't need to world build in this movie. There are already 6 other movies, 2 sets of cartoons and a couple of novels out there. The world is built.

At the end of the day, there are problems with the film, but even while I was acknowledging them I was having fun. Its a fun movie. And I didn't stop enjoying myself at any point. Something I could never say about 1-3.

Agreed. Its not that there aren't issues with the film. It's that those issues in no way deter me from enjoying it. The issues IMO are very comparable to those in the first three and I still have zero issue enjoying those.

Alright finally got to see it yesterday. First off it was very enjoyable but a little too New Hopeish in a few spots. I'd put it in a tie for 4th in my order of Favorites (1. Empire, 2. A New Hope, 3. Revenge of the Sith 4. Return of the Jedi/The Force Awakens)

The Good:

Rey - I like her character and I'm interested to see where they go with it. They take some liberties with her ability to learn to use the force so quickly but overall I found her enjoyable.

Poe - He needs his role expanded.

Han Solo - Great job interacting with the new characters, I thought he did a nice job tying the stories together.

BB8 - R2D2 Lite, loved the interaction with R2D2

The Disappointing:

Kylo Ren - I actually like the look with the mask on and like the way he pays homage to Darth Vader but two things really annoy me. First his look without the mask, horrible choice in my opinion. My first reaction when he takes the mask off is every Sheriff Nottingham I have seen in every Robin Hood movie before or Professor Snape from Harry Potter. The dude is just way too stereo typical looking and I didn't think his acting was that great. Second the temper tantrums like a 2 year old, Vader choked someone when they disappointed him, this guy slashes up consoles with is light saber. You will never be your grandfather at this rate.
Your thoughts on Kylo Ren are exactly what JJ and Driver were going for. Instead of coming out of the movie saying "Man, Darth Maul was so cool!", we leave loathing Kylo Ren. That's how a good an antagonist should make us respond.

That'd be a great shot..if I had ever said anything like it was the whole movie that didn't make sense.

You needed to be told that they were desperate to find Luke or that the Republic was supporting the Resistance?
JFC. :wall: I need to know who the Resistance is and what their relationship is to the Republic. It's central to the story.
Next movie comes out in May of 2017. I would be surprised if Disney didn't have another cartoon series or two to fill in all of the gaps between VI and VII.

A lot would have been better for me if they'd simply written the Crawl a little differently. Even just the second paragraph...

"Weakened by false security, the unprepared Republic is forced to secretly support The Resistance. Led by General Leia Organa Solo, they are desperate to find her brother, Luke...."

Or something like that.
So your major problem is a single line.
If that's what you think, then its obvious why the simplified plot works for you.
I was able to fill in the blanks. You weren't
The problem was I could fill in any number of blanks. Is the first order still the supreme force in the galaxy and the new republic just pretending they don't exist to gather new members? Did the war ever end?

Did the first order take the remaining loyal systems of the Empire and continue to govern and the new republic take those that wanted to escape Imperial control while the resistance formed from a 3rd group of separatists still trying to destroy the Empire? Did this Resistance antagonize the Imperial remnant that was content to move on into building another super weapon in retaliation? Is the first order acting in defense to defend against a clandestine war that they have had problems proving exists to the members of the new republic and were forced to take drastic measures?

Is snoke just a concerned leader for the first order systems that he saw all the resources being taken by the new republic without proper tariffs paid? He could just be looking out for his people and their growing plight as these outsiders steal their livelihood. How do we know if from his POV the New Republic isn't evil?

After the Battle of Endor, how was Leia not the most promising political figure in the new republic? War hero, former politician that knew the game, force sensitive. She should have ran for chancellor for a bit to get things back on track. She's a natural leader.

Han looked like he was ready to settle down and start a family after ROTJ. How do we go from there to I haven't spoken to Leia in years and oh yea I'm smuggling again. I can surmise that he had to sell his daughter into slavery to pay the bills and was having regrets once she showed up again.

Then Luke, the Hero of the republic or public enemy number one. He killed the emperor and Vader in one shot as far as the people know. At the same time he blew up another Death Star that surely had to have been approved by some sort of public sector oversight after the last debacle cost the Empire trillions. Then he goes snd hides in a cave in some remote location after hid attack. He's a terrorist.

Lots you could fill in.

Not sure if you saw my earlier post, but a lot of this is explained outside of the movie in other sources or even in the movie itself.

The Empire was destroyed a year after the destruction of the second Death Star in a giant battle over Jakku. The Empire / First Order fled to the Unknown regions and signed an arms treaty with the New Republic to prevent arming up for another war (which the First Order then violated with the help of arms manufacturers that suddenly lost most of their market and followed the First Order to the Unknown Regions to keep making money).

Snoke / the First Order are determined to bring "order to chaos" by eliminating democracy.

Leia was part of the political process and tried to get the New Republic to arm up and fight the First Order, but was voted down by people who wanted peace above all else and didn't view the First Order as a real threat. Not hard to presume that the daughter of the right hand man that ruled the galaxy with an iron fist might not be the first choice for Chancellor regardless of what side she was on.

Han hadn't spoken to Leia in years because of Kylo's actions. There's a line about it in the movie. They both "went back to doing the only thing they were ever really good at". Might be flimsy, but it was addressed in the movie.

We admittedly don't get much about the perception of Luke in the galaxy, but we do know that there are widely shared stories about his actions. Unless Rey is a villian worshipper like Kylo, her reaction on the Falcon would imply that Luke is considered a hero by those in the New Republic.

I don't really see a lot of room for exploring those subjects in the movie unless you want it to be 3 hours long. They already shaved some scenes a bit shorter than is reasonable (the 2 min formation of a plan to destroy Starkiller base, for example). Where do they shoehorn in all of that backstory and keep a decent pacing to the movie?

I did and I appreciate it. I was merely going through some of the many thoughts in my head when I watched the movie the first time to illustrate the types of tangents we could go on from what they showed us.

Does anyone know if JJ leans towards more of the Joss Whedon model where "the movie in the theater is my final cut" or more of the Peter Jackson model "I like these scenes that were cut and I can make more money so extended edition it is"?

Insein- I asked before but don't you think we'll get some of those answers in 8 and 9?
I hope we will.

Again my complaint was that the director did a poor job setting the scene. The characters are interesting and the plot could go somewhere but the scene is like being in this blank room where nothing we knew before is relevant. So we needed a little more to fill in those white walls.

That's all I'm saying. Not all this other typical internet tough guy nonsense of "you're too dumb to get it" or "you're too nerdy to enjoy it."

Your thoughts on Kylo Ren are exactly what JJ and Driver were going for. Instead of coming out of the movie saying "Man, Darth Maul was so cool!", we leave loathing Kylo Ren. That's how a good an antagonist should make us respond.
I was thinking about how ironic Darth Maul turned out to be for Lucas.

We know after Lucas's disappointment with 5, he started to focus as much on toys as he did on story. He was so focused on the toy market that Ford said Lucas's response to his request to gave Solo die in 6 to give the movie some much needed depth, was "how can I sell things based on a dead character?"

And yet after Maul was killed in 1, he was easily the most popular character with kids. For example, years Darth Maul was the most prominent Halloween costume.

It makes me wonder if Lucas knew Maul was going to be that popular, whether he would have killed him off.....

Lucas completely misread the tea leaves regarding the kids of that time period who like adults, did not take to Jar Jar in the ways Lucas hoped kids would.

It's a F'N movie people. It either entertains you or it doesn't.
Some people like to discuss why or why they didn't like movies they've watched. Crazy, isn't it?
I don't like the Three Little Pigs because a wolf blowing that hard is just totally unrealistic. How can anyone like that story with a hole that big in it?
People like you are why we have Twilight.
Now THAT could really happen!

Because if you accept the initial conceit that pigs can do the normally impossible task of building houses then you accept that wolves can blow them down.

This would be like the U.S. de-arming after WW2 and not worrying about those pesky Russians.

I don't like the Three Little Pigs because a wolf blowing that hard is just totally unrealistic. How can anyone like that story with a hole that big in it?
Your posts and the wolf have a lot in common.

:lmao: bunch of lunatics.

Because if you accept the initial conceit that pigs can do the normally impossible task of building houses then you accept that wolves can blow them down.
Was that explained in the opening credits?

They don't have to make him cool or make me like his character but to me they basically made a comedy of him.

It's not that we like to hate him. Most think he's a #####. That we might have a chance against him in a fight. THAT you don't want for your main Villain.

Just saw it and loved it of course. Felt like they recycled tons of plot points from the first movie but didnt really care. Loved Rey, reminded me of Olivia Wilde. Someone on instagram ruined Kylo Ren being Han Solo's son but I had no clue he killed Han.

Seems to me kylo ren may know who Rae is as well. Watching the flashback again it does seem ren saves her as a young child
My nephew emailed me yesterday and said this almost verbatim after watching it a second time.
When ren is told a girl is helping bb8 he says "what girl"? The way he says it and then talks with her after the capture make me think he does. Starting to buy into she was a student who was brain wiped and dumped on that planet for safety. It would explain so much as to how she quickly did all that force stuff.

Before I continue the discussion, is this a safe space free of any criticism of the movie? Id hate to be triggered by people with different views than my own.
