A lot would have been better for me if they'd simply written the Crawl a little differently. Even just the second paragraph...
"Weakened by false security, the unprepared Republic is forced to secretly support The Resistance. Led by General Leia Organa Solo, they are desperate to find her brother, Luke...."
Or something like that.
So your major problem is a single line.
If that's what you think, then its obvious why the simplified plot works for you.
I was able to fill in the blanks. You weren't
The problem was I could fill in any number of blanks. Is the first order still the supreme force in the galaxy and the new republic just pretending they don't exist to gather new members? Did the war ever end?Did the first order take the remaining loyal systems of the Empire and continue to govern and the new republic take those that wanted to escape Imperial control while the resistance formed from a 3rd group of separatists still trying to destroy the Empire? Did this Resistance antagonize the Imperial remnant that was content to move on into building another super weapon in retaliation? Is the first order acting in defense to defend against a clandestine war that they have had problems proving exists to the members of the new republic and were forced to take drastic measures?
Is snoke just a concerned leader for the first order systems that he saw all the resources being taken by the new republic without proper tariffs paid? He could just be looking out for his people and their growing plight as these outsiders steal their livelihood. How do we know if from his POV the New Republic isn't evil?
After the Battle of Endor, how was Leia not the most promising political figure in the new republic? War hero, former politician that knew the game, force sensitive. She should have ran for chancellor for a bit to get things back on track. She's a natural leader.
Han looked like he was ready to settle down and start a family after ROTJ. How do we go from there to I haven't spoken to Leia in years and oh yea I'm smuggling again. I can surmise that he had to sell his daughter into slavery to pay the bills and was having regrets once she showed up again.
Then Luke, the Hero of the republic or public enemy number one. He killed the emperor and Vader in one shot as far as the people know. At the same time he blew up another Death Star that surely had to have been approved by some sort of public sector oversight after the last debacle cost the Empire trillions. Then he goes snd hides in a cave in some remote location after hid attack. He's a terrorist.
Lots you could fill in.
Not sure if you saw my earlier post, but a lot of this is explained outside of the movie in other sources or even in the movie itself.
The Empire was destroyed a year after the destruction of the second Death Star in a giant battle over Jakku. The Empire / First Order fled to the Unknown regions and signed an arms treaty with the New Republic to prevent arming up for another war (which the First Order then violated with the help of arms manufacturers that suddenly lost most of their market and followed the First Order to the Unknown Regions to keep making money).
Snoke / the First Order are determined to bring "order to chaos" by eliminating democracy.
Leia was part of the political process and tried to get the New Republic to arm up and fight the First Order, but was voted down by people who wanted peace above all else and didn't view the First Order as a real threat. Not hard to presume that the daughter of the right hand man that ruled the galaxy with an iron fist might not be the first choice for Chancellor regardless of what side she was on.
Han hadn't spoken to Leia in years because of Kylo's actions. There's a line about it in the movie. They both "went back to doing the only thing they were ever really good at". Might be flimsy, but it was addressed in the movie.
We admittedly don't get much about the perception of Luke in the galaxy, but we do know that there are widely shared stories about his actions. Unless Rey is a villian worshipper like Kylo, her reaction on the Falcon would imply that Luke is considered a hero by those in the New Republic.
I don't really see a lot of room for exploring those subjects in the movie unless you want it to be 3 hours long. They already shaved some scenes a bit shorter than is reasonable (the 2 min formation of a plan to destroy Starkiller base, for example). Where do they shoehorn in all of that backstory and keep a decent pacing to the movie?
