STAR WARS: EP 7 ***SPOILER ZONE*** - Go here if you've seen it (1 Viewer)

I can forgive the retread stuff so long as it sets up an interesting trajectory for future movies.

I really didn't expect to see another f'n Death Star with a fundamental weakness.
"This part seems important...let's have...six guys guarding it."
While I agree that the "there's always a weakness" trope is a bit tired, you have to give the bad guys a little credit.

The Death Star had a critical weakness, but it required someone using the Force to exploit it (and remember, as far as the Empire was concerned there were essentially no Jedi left to do so).

Death Star II had no such weakness, but wasn't finished when the Rebels found it and the shield generator was external.

Starkiller base had an internal shield system that could only be circumvented by doing something insane (using a hyperdrive to approach the planet), and the "weakness" the rebels exploited was actually pretty strong. Despite being taken completely by surprise without the help of their shielding and without any fighter cover, the First Order still successfully defended the weak spot (and the weak spot held up to heavy punishment itself) up until previously mentioned crazies that knocked out the shield also managed to blow a hole in the structure. It then took an amazing pilot to fly through said hole and fire several salvos of perfectly placed shots to destroy the base. What kind of engineer can predict that ####?
STILL WEAK! ;)

One of the commanders came up with the idea on the spot and they went in and destroyed it. Very flimsy

It also felt like Lucas himself submitted the dialogue for Han and Leia.
It felt like I was watching Cocoon
Ford isn't the actor he once was but he can still have his moments. This movie reminded me a lot of his last Indiana Jones portrayal. Flashes of the brilliance we all know and love but only flashes now and little sustained greatness.

Carrie Fisher on the other hand has nothing left at all as an actress. Plus she appears to be completely insane. I can only imagine the amount of work it took for Abrams to get anything remotely usable from her.

Regarding Hamil

Since episide 5 is fresh in my kids minds (watched it Saturday and Sunday, saw 7 on Sunday), they think the funniest part is when he grits his teeth and yells THATS IMPOSSIBLE after Vaders reveal. You would think it was written for comedic effect the way they laugh about it.

While I hate the return of the Death Star as much as anyone...I'm not sure I understand why everyone whines about the "fundamental weakness".ALL giant weapons systems IRL have fundamental weaknesses too. Aircraft carriers are ponderous and turn poorly...they need supportive vessels around them to act as shields, hunt and prevent subs from getting too close, etc. The Death stars had realistic weaknesses protected by huge fleets of smaller ships. They were great at destroying planets but not so great at fighting hundreds of small fighters. There's a reason that all ships don't come in the same size and shape!

The "fundamental weakness" is not a problem for me...it's a natural expectation of any over-sized ship/weapon system.
Huge fleets?

What is unanimously consider the best Star wars movie? What did it not have?

Very much a retread in a lot of ways. So much better done than the prequels and new characters are interesting. Wish a little more time spent on some of the backstory, but Abrams always runs everything fast.

Im in the minority and was underwhelmed by it. Some of the things that stood out was the lack of urgency and tension for the climax, the lack of a memorable John Williams score, and the gratuitous callbacks to previous movies.
it's either a vocal minority or not the minority. Seems many people are underwhelmed. It was entertaining but not as good as we wanted it to be.
Strange, most of what Im hearing from people is that they are satisfied.

The overwhelming majority love this movie. 95% on RT and 92% fan vote. But there are flaws.

Just saw this. Really loved the first act. The period from reintroducing Han to when Finn decides to leave and Rey tells him she won't let him is meh. I felt like these people knew each other for a day and didn't get the sense of earned comradery.

But damn if Rey isn't by far the best character ever in the franchise. I love the raw prodigy story. Even more so than Luke. All of her interactions with Kylo Ren are outstanding. Lots and lots of goosebumps.

Plot was hard to follow for me at times. Just okay, Bit characteristically Abrams knew where the heart was, and it's in the struggle between light and dark and the power of the Force. And he nailed that.

Finally saw it. It was awesome. Also really liked the Adam Driver casting. Can't believe we gotta wait 2 years or more for the next one.

you don't need to wait that long.

Episode 8 is being released May of 2017.

Star Wars Rogue 1 can tide you over till then which is being released December of 2016.

I agree with you on this one. I was like "Oh you've got to be ####### kidding me" when they got to that point. But the overall character development of this installment was so good compared to most of the other films, that I'm willing to suspend disbelief to see where this goes from here. In other words, I'm viewing the Star Killer as something that they just had to get out of the way to show Kylo killing Han and then throwing down against Finn and Rey.

Totally agree. Ford started a little weak but turned in some great moments. Fisher looked like she was held together with bailing wire and chewing gum.

The Death Star is to space like a battle ship or aircraft carrier is to the sea. What other kind of weapon is the dark side suppose to come up with?

It's retreading old ground, but the HEIR to the EMPIRE books did an excellent job of putting the Rebellion behind the 8 Ball, with little to no hope WITHOUT having the Empire resort to using a giant space station that blows up planets.

Honestly, they probably would have been better not blowing the base in TFA and instead using it as a background menace for a couple of movies.

Have you seen any of the press interviews for the film? Fisher is insane. I know she's had a lot of issues over the years but she's not taking her meds lately. I feel bad for everyone doing interviews with her.

I read an article last week that I thought was tongue in cheek but now I am not so sure.

Fisher was telling the interviewer that she was offering some wisdom to Ridley by telling her it would not be great for her career if she fornicated everyone in the crew.

So that scene in Blues Brothers where she was shooting at Belushi was a no BS scene? Niceeeeeeeee, makes the movie better for me. "Hey. she is shooting at him with a real gun, WTF??"........"just keep rolling"

Yeah, she looked outta place. Was hard to watch. Hard to even tell it was the same person.

Not the best, but she's definitely great. Like the look on her face when BB8 told her that black fella stole Po's jacket. Awesome.

She said that on Conan too and it was a funny line. But then you see more and more interviews where she's dominating everything with stuff like that and her dog (I think she brings her dog everywhere) and it becomes more and more odd. She's definitely off her meds.

This. On a second viewing tonight I noticed that during the dialogue between these two, in many instances Fisher is talking but instead of showing her struggle to speak they show Ford's face through most of it. She was really bad, which is a shame becausethe on screen chemistry between those two in the early ones was great, and if she weren't so far gone, the moments between them in this could have been great.

Seems like solid advice.

Was on another board the day before I saw this and a thread topic read, "HAN SOLO KILLED BY WANNABE VADER SON!"

What is my recourse?

Sucked watching Han die though, even though you knew it was coming.

I know they mentioned it but why weren't they using the clones anymore? Also noticed a chick working on the Death Star planet. Kylo did not have the gravitas of Vader or Darth Maul to me. Just seemed kind of like a watered down Vader.
That was the point.
Kylo blows Darth Maul out of the water. Maul was nothing more than a cartoon chatacter.

Maul would force choke the #### out of Kylo. He wouldn't even waste his time with him.
