The background is nice, I just don't think it's necessary. The story is about the efforts of two groups at war and trying to find Luke.

I've started writing this post like five times, keep deleting it. I'm at a loss as to how you can say that it's unnecessary to know this information about the two groups - especially when the movie treats them as three groups.

We've seen mind control and now reading minds so it's not a huge leap to think that a mind wipe would be possible on a child.

Why were they fighting in New Hope? We were told there was a civil war in the NH crawl but thats it. We had to wait until episodes 1-3 find out.

Did Han Solo take a Rosetta Stone class to learn Wookie?

Why were droids not let into the cantina? Why would you serve droids anyway? Do droids drink?

Also, isn't it weird to have a force flash back to a point in time when the object you're touching wasn't even there? Why would Luke's light saber that fell on Bespin contain anything that would jog Reys memories? The cave on Degobah contained an immense amount of dark side energy that trigger a hallucination in Luke to show him a metaphor of what he may become. He meditated to see past places and future of Han and Leia in the clouds but it wasn't tied to an object.

I mean objects have had force latency in the former EU before but usually tied to a point in time that the object experienced. Unless Luke somehow found his light saber shortly after ROTJ and then gave it to Maz after Ren killed his students.

Either way, its unusual.

If I were a betting man:

Rey is Luke's daughter from some other Jedi chick and will be the most powerful Jedi to date. Mom died (killed by Snoke maybe?) and he hid her on that planet to protect her from Snoke & Ren. Rey is the new Luke & Leia rolled into one.

Finn is Lando's son... and not force sensitive. Billy Dee will show up in VIII and explain what happened when Finn was taken as a boy. Finn is the new Han.

Ben Solo/Kylo Ren knows about his cousin's existence and figured out that Rey was her. Snoke knows of her as well. They actually thought she was dead.

C3PO's red arm is actually made for combat and he uses it to save someone or beat up a villain.

I was talking about of those who seemed to not enjoy the movie. I was ok with Ren - I think the problem is that since people see this as ANH 2 they want Ren to be a badass like Vader. He's still learning and who knows if he ever gets even close to what Vader was. I liked the character though. Someone (Gator?) pointed out that they ruined the Vader mask reveal scene by already giving away who he was - I tend to agree with that in hindsight although I didn't pick up on it while watching. Although, I think most had already assumed some kind of tie to the Skywalkers.

If this was true, wouldn't they have tried to cast the characters a little closer in age? I think Driver is almost 10 years older than Ridley, who herself looks younger than she is.

I thought Kylo was a great character. I didn't like that he was punked by Rey (even though I really liked her character) pretty easily at the end.

Finn was the one I had the most problems with. Supposedly indoctrinated by the New Order for decades(?), he loses all discipline and order that you would expect a trained soldier to have within the first 5 minutes of the movie and flips to the Resistance with little motivation then actively tries to kill his old buddies (one of which death bothered him so much he deserted in the first place).

He is not just voiced by Andy Serkis, he was motion captured, similar to how Lupita portrayed Maz. Serkis also motion captured all of Gollum.

As a side note, I think Serkis might be the only actor involved in Star Wars, MCU and LOTR. There might be one more I can't think of.

I liked Ren as a character, and I thought Adam Driver did a fine job. it seems like he's always just a hair away from completely losing it, and sometimes he does lose it...RIP control panels. and he also wants to be just like his grandpappy, but isn't there yet, which is a pretty big source of angst for him. add in the daddy issues, and he's a messed up dude. I thought he conveyed that pretty well.

Just cause 1-3 sucked doesn't give them a pass to make TFA too similar to ANH.

My point is that there are stark similarities between ANH and TFA that made it predictable. I was hoping for a twist that would have made it more interesting from a plot sense (the action was great). Killing off Han isn't good enough. That was predictable too. Granted, that scene was striking similar to The Empire Strikes Back.

There are a surprising number of catwalks in the EU. Those things are dangerous.

Not sure I get this. Where you alive for the last three steaming piles of crap we saw that were called Star Wars films? The bar was set exceptionally low and at worst Awakens is on par with Jedi.

Yeah but they save a ton of money on flooring, which they can then use to shore up the exhaust ports.
