STAR WARS: EP 7 ***SPOILER ZONE*** - Go here if you've seen it (1 Viewer)

I've also raised my opinion on second watch, and I loved it the first go 'round.

Great pace, great characters, great direction and scenes.

I didn't think Carrie Fisher was quite as bad the second time around, though she was still the low point in the movie IMO.

Daisy Ridley just flat out nailed it, and as a dad of four girls I'm stoked that Star Wars has a female badass lead.

Its hard to consistently restaff when the whole evil fleet keeps getting destroyed.

Germany had WWI and WWII, but just ran out of evil so they went back to making cars instead of recruiting sanitation workers.

I haven't read it myself, but I've seen it referenced quite a bit on Wookiepedia, etc. "Before The Awakening" -- it's intended as a book for younger people (8-12 I think?).

Finn's story summary (spoilers if you're planning to read it, I guess):

FN-2187 served under Captain Phasma and, as a cadet, alongside fellow troopers FN-2199 ("Nines"), FN-2000 ("Zeroes"), and FN-2003 ("Slip"). FN-2187, known to his fellow troopers as Eight-Seven, was seen by his comrades and superiors as an ideal First Order stormtrooper, and consistently scored top marks as a cadet. Finn was also once in charge of sanitation duties at Starkiller Base.

During his time as a cadet, Eight-Seven and his fellow troopers underwent a training simulation in which they assaulted a New Republic bunker, with the intention of destroying a heavy repeating blaster manned by Republic soldiers. During their advance on the bunker, Slip fell behind—a common occurrence—and Eight-Seven intended to rescue him. Over the objections of Zeroes and Nines, who wanted to complete their objective and felt that rescuing Slip would lead the Republic to take them all out, Eight-Seven ordered them to rescue their fellow soldier. Eight-Seven sent Zeroes and Nines in different directions in order to divide the Republic's attention, while Eight-Seven himself went for Slip and successfully rescued him. Though Zeroes and Nines were pinned down, their diversion gave Eight-Seven a clear path into the Republic bunker, into which he threw a grenade and destroyed the blaster before the Republic could react to his attack.

The simulation was monitored by Captain Phasma and General Hux. After the training session ended, Phasma spoke to the troopers and told them that their performance was adequate. Each was given a review of their performance, with Eight-Seven being commended on his kill rate and the completion of his objective. She further said that his fellow soldiers should follow his example. The other troopers were dismissed, but Eight-Seven was ordered to stay so Phasma could question why he rescued Slip, as it was not the first time Eight-Seven had to help him. Phasma ordered him to stop, as she said the First Order was only as strong as its weakest link. Rather than fixing the problem, Phasma said he was allowing it to persist and weaken the group. Phasma sensed hesitation on his part, but he assured her that he would stop helping Slip.

Following this incident, FN-2187 and his fellow troopers were deployed to a mining colony in an artificial asteroid field known as Pressy's Tumble in the Outer Rim system of Pressylla. Captain Phasma informed the Stormtroopers there that the purpose of the visit was to 'restore order' after Republic agents had infiltrated the mining operations, sabotaged equipment and created dissent among the miners there. Upon arrival, Captain Phasma took FN-2187's unit to a room of negotiators. Captain Phasma then gave the order that the troopers execute the negotiators. FN-2187 aimed his rifle at an Abednedo negotiator, yet couldn't bring himself to shoot—Slip attacked the negotiator instead. Upon returning from Pressylla, FN-2187 and his fellow troopers were officially recognized as full-fledged Stormtroopers. Captain Phasma decided that FN-2187 ought to be deployed in an upcoming battle in Jakku, thinking that he would understand what it meant to be a Stormtrooper and fight back when brought face-to-face with those attacking him back.

Considering they take recruits from their families at a young age, I think it is perfectly reasonable that you have different duties and work your way up to being a battle ready storm trooper.

Avatar made a TON globally. STTFA has taken in slightly over half of what Avatar did worldwide. The Force Awakens still needs roughly $1.3 billion more to pass Avatar in total box office. Put another way, only 8 films have made in total what Force Awakens still needs to make to pass Avatar.

It's not been doing great in Asia in general and Chinese pre sales have been soft.

Yes, it is perfectly logical to take a child away with the specific purpose of turning them into a top of the line fighting machine, but instead of constantly training them for combat, make them sweep floors and plunge toilets as their primary job for a period of time.

Yes, it is perfectly logical to take a child away with the specific purpose of turning them into a top of the line fighting machine, but instead of constantly training them for combat, make them sweep floors and plunge toilets as their primary job for a period of time.

Hey those sweeping skills are how he knew how to handle a light saber. They knew what they were doing. Like an evil Mr Myagi.

 
The main difference financially between TFA and Avatar is TFA has been earning one dollar overseas for every dollar it has made in the States. But Avatar earned roughly three dollars for every dollar it made domestically. Even if it pulls in $500 million in China (which I believe would be $200 million more than the current best there), TFA would still need to come up with another $800 million to outsell Avatar.

We'll have to see how it plays out, but I think a lot of what it is making in the US at this point is people seeing it again, and I am not sure how many people will keep going to see it multiple times.

It seems to be more of an American cultural thing than an international one this time around. It's only the 15th best selling movie internationally so far. Not sure it will have the sea legs to catch Avatar.

I was just wondering if anyone else noticed when they were running around on Starkiller base that they had a background line that almost seemed to be lifted from A New Hope? There's a group of stormtroopers that go running by and you can hear them say "We think they've split up" or something like that. The stormtroopers looking for Han/Chewie/Luke/Leia on the original Death Star said the same thing. It was in the background in both movies, so I was wondering how many others caught that.

 
Saw it the other day. Thought it was pretty good. My dad and I were talking about it how Rey could keep up with Kylo after leaving the movie, but apparently I completely forgot that he had gotten shot. Thinking back on it, they definitely were trying to point out how badly he was hurt, but during the viewing, it was lost on me. I just explained it as he wasn't trying to kill her at all. He was trying to keep her alive so that he could train her.

I thought the Jedi Mind Trick with the stormtrooper was cheesy, but whatever.

Definitely felt like A New Hope 2.0, but I enjoyed it. I think it's setting up for Kylo to go confront Luke and Rey while she's training, since he saw a bit of where Luke was.

Who the hell was the giant supreme leader guy?? I'm really hoping they do a good job explaining why Kylo went to the dark side. Didn't Vader turn "good" at the end of RoJ? It's been awhile, so I'm not 100% sure. But in TFA Kylo says something about showing him the power of the dark side grandfather when looking at Vader's busted mask. Curious how that transition is going to play out.

I chucked in the theatre when I heard that. My wife looked at me and asked why that was funny. I brushed her off with a Jedi mind trick kind of wave.

Curious how that transition is going to play out.

It doesn't make sense for him to worship his grandfather. Anakin shows up at the end of Jedi as a ghost so once he saw Kylo admiring Darth Vader he would have appeared to him and say "Uh, in case no one told you before, I turned back to the good side and I'm the one who brought down the Empire."

I read an interesting theory about that and Rey's force vision in the movie. The person speculated that Rey's force vision when she touched Luke's lightsaber was an example of a force power called psychometry, which basically allows you to see the history of people and events associated with an object just by touching it. If that is true, perhaps Kylo had a similar experience when he first touched Vader's mask, where it showed him the history of Anakin as Sith lord and the "power of the dark side."

Yah, that was my thought as well. Why is he asking Vader to "show him the power of the darkside" when Vader himself rejected it at the end. Just didn't make sense and was hoping someone with better StarWars knowledge could explain it to me.
