Stat Question - I think I was robbed of a week 1 win, commish disagree (1 Viewer)

My point is that you just have to live with the scoring how it is set up. When you play in a team defense/ special teams league any player who participates in those specific snaps are lumped together and that's just the way it is. You can't have a player who happens to play offense just arbitrarily treated differently. You may think that is exactly your point but I guarantee there have been other times in the past/present/future where this wrinkle affected numerous fantasy outcomes and it went unnoticed or was disregarded. What you need to do is change the rules for next year if you feel that strongly about it. Your only other option would be to watchdog every muffed kick or punt return along with the commish retroactively for week 1 and all weeks going forward this year which sounds like a huge waste of time/effort. What you should really be doing is playing in a return yardage league where team defense has nothing to do with special teams scoring or else maybe a return yardage IDP league.

The commissioner's logic is that you are being fussy about a detail that caused you a H2H loss putting him in the position where he has to look like the bad guy from either your perspective or the guy you will beat if anything is changed. It's a no-win situation that you are forcing him into which is most likely what he is really resenting. That's why you should take your medicine so to speak and work with the commissioner and the rest of the league to change the league format/scoring for the upcoming year. That way you can be the good guy and say you don't think it's set up fairly and you'd hate to see anyone else lose in the same fashion so it needs to be changed. One H2H loss in week 1 shouldn't be a big deal unless you think your team is just that bad. I play in a few leagues where luck is dampened by playing the league average in addition to H2H so low scoring wins aren't rewarded and high scoring losses are easier to live with. That could help as well.

Sorry to be blunt earlier.
Who cares if it happened before and no one noticed it. The fact is someone FINALLY noticed it AND brought it up--the other games are irrelevant. Had the issue been brought up and dealt with in the same manner, then I get your "probably affected other games" argument. IF the rule is clear and the scoring system was INCORRECT, then fix it. If there is a gray area as to the issue, then the Commisioner should do his job--make a decision and not just say "the website did it, the website did it." Bringing this up is not being fussy--it's a legit complaint.

The fact remains that the Commissioner is afraid to change the score because he/she is being results oriented---someone Wins and someone Loses, but that should have ZERO bearing. Look at the Team's score in isolation, and adjust the W/L accordingly. It is not like his opponent was playing "defense" and changed the outcome of the game--on the contrary, each team's score in viewed in a vaccum and had no bearing on how the other team will do. Who you happen to play in a H2H league and how they score is "luck."

You mentioned luck at the end of your post. Not changing the score or at least not having a REASONABLE argument of why he/she is not "bad luck"... it is bad commissioning--difference.

Update - commish put this to a league vote, indicating to everyone that I brought this up last Thursday night. Vote was 6-1 to overturn (Commish left himself, me, and the guy I was playing out of the vote.) The guy I played texted me and said he agrees that the rules were not being applied correctly.

Thanks for all the feedback guys.

Big props to your opponent for using logic and not simply seeing it from the POV that helped his team this week.

Yes a victory for common sense.

Good for the commish. Good for your opponent. This what makes fantasy football leagues strong is when everybody is reasonable and willing to do what is best for the league and not just for their team.

CBS has always intrepreted the rule in this manner and our league always manually makes the correction if it affects the outcome of the game. Our justification for this change is that whomever receives credit for the TD (WR or D/ST), should also be the one penalized for the fumble. So, if Welker were to run the punt back but the D/ST was the only one to get credit for the TD then in the case of a fumble it should be charged to the D/ST and not Welker.

Awesome dude. Its good when the league solves it's own problems logically.

congrats for the outcome and good job being diligent. You deserved the win and it's good that there seems to be some sanity in your league.

This thread was weird and hilarious...basically for several of the posters in here it says that however your league is set up is final and anyone who thinks they've been wronged should shut up and quit whining. People used to say rules are rules, you gotta follow the constitution, you shoulda read them, change them in the off-season...but then something like this happens and suddenly people's responses are, your hosting service is what determines it, or that's the way it is in the NFL, or fix it going forward or next season.

Glad to see your league mates came to the conclusion they did and your opponent was classy about it.

Yes you have a gripe...I adjusted the Welker teams score by +2

If it has never been in your rules why penalize a player when same player would get no points for return yardage or a TD
That's the thing that's not clear, although I think said player or any player gets no points for returns......it's just the Team D/special teams that scores??

I used to hate watching Dez return kicks and punts in one of my leagues. Number 1, he was bound to get hurt, number 2, rules did not allow tds for specific players on these returns....if there's no skin in the act of returning the ball, why penalize him?

Same thing happened to me, Dez got docked for a fumble, I asked the commish to table it for off season agenda, and it was agreed to address in the off-season. its just the point differential that stings here ofr the OP< which we can all see.
The thing is, to me the way the rules are stated ARE clear. There are no negative points for DST, and players are docked 2 points if they fumble as a "Receiver." Now semantics could come into play if that section was titled "Wide Receiver Rules" and he fumbled. But they are titled by task, not position - Passing Rules, Rushing Rules, Receiving Rules, Kicking Rules, DST rules. Since Welker isn't a receiver on that play, there should be no negative. The site is just programmed incorrectly.
Just to play devil's advocate - I'm sure the owner who got the win would point out that the rule is titled "Receiving Rules" and that Welker was receiving the punt.
How stupid can we get?
