Someone explain wtf "steel cut" oatmeal is?
Steel-Cut Oats are whole grain groats (the inner portion of the oat kernel) which have been cut into only two or three pieces. They are golden in colour and resemble mini rice particles. How are they different from Rolled Oats? Rolled oats are flake oats that have been steamed, rolled, re-steamed and toasted. Due to all of this additional processing they have lost some of their natural taste, goodness and texture. What makes Steel-cut Oats so special? Grains are essential to a healthy lifestyle and form the foundation of the food pyramid. Steel-cut oats are inherently full of nutritional value and are high in B-Vitamins, calcium, protein and fiber while low in salt and unsaturated fat. One cup of steel-cut oatmeal contains more fiber than a bran muffin and twice as much fibre as Cream of Wheat. The quality of Irish Oats and the distinctive crunchy texture make McCann's Steel-Cuts a gourmet delight. All oats grown for and used by McCann's are free from genetically modified organisms. The FDA endorsed Oats in the fight against Heart Disease and certain cancers. In August 1999, the FDA in the U.S. issued a further endorsement of oats. It authorized a new claim that will allow companies to promote the benefits of whole grains in relation to heart disease and certain cancers. It indicated that diets that are rich in whole grains, such as oats, may reduce the risk of these conditions.Oatmeal is the only food that naturally contains GLA (gamma linolenic acid) an essential fatty acid critical to the body's production of the favorable eicosanoids (PGE1 - prostaglandins). Eating steel-cut oats (very slow cooking) four times a week will provide you with a good supply of GLA.Wholegrain Oats and Type 2 Diabetes - In the U.S. almost 16 million people suffer from Type 2 diabetes with as many as 625,000 new cases being diagnosed each year. A new 10-year study published in the American Journal of Public health indicated that eating oatmeal (a wholegrain cereal) on a regular basis can help to reduce the risk of Type 2 (adult onset) diabetes. The study showed that eating 1 serving of oatmeal (equivalent to 1 cup cooked) 2-4 times weekly resulted in a 16% reduction in risk of suffering from Type 2 diabetes. By increasing consumption of oatmeal to 5-6 times weekly, there was a corresponding 39% reduction in the risk of onset of Type 2 diabetes. Why "steel cut"? I've heard this is the most nutricious but why?
Based on your initial post, this sounds like a good thing.Steel-Cut Oats are whole grain groats (the inner portion of the oat kernel) which have been cut into only two or three pieces. They are golden in colour and resemble mini rice particles.

I used to use sugar but have now cut down to only a teaspoon of maple syrup. I also use cinnamon and when we have it I shave fresh nutmeg into it.Been eating this stuff for a while and I've come up with two that are pretty good.
1) Use apple juice in place of water. Add some cinnamon.
2) Add maple syrup and brown sugar.
When I'm going to do steel cut oats for breakfast, I cook them the night before. Bring just to a boil on the stove, kill the heat, put on the lid, and go to bed. Takes about 5 minutes.I've switched from steel cut to Coach's Oats. The big reason is that it took too long to make steel cut oats and I stopped eating them as much. Coach's Oats have the same texture (virtually identical IMO) to steel cut oats but they are cooked in 5 minutes vs. 30. I usually make two servings and eat it the next morning. Been having it everyday because of the ease of cooking them.

Been eating oatmeal every morning (my daughter as well) since switching to Coach's Oats. I still use a teaspoon of sugar (4g) and some milk in addition to cinnamon/nutmeg but I think it's still healthier than anything else I could be eating.Best deal in Oatmeal: Coach's Oats
You can get a big bag at Costco for like $5 and it lasts forever. Don't know if it is steel cut but it tastes like steel cut.
