Steelers (2007) (3 Viewers)

anybody else a little upset about the comments Faneca made according to Andrea Kramer: that he is trying to not get hurt, playing differently, doesnt want to be a captain etc.?
I don't care what he says. He can go wherever he wants next season and get paid a gazillion dollars. For now I just want him to line up and beat the crap out of the opposing defense.
I disagree. His comments sound like a version of "operation shutdown" to me. I still think we should have traded him to Arizona prior to the draft and gone with Kemowhatever and simmons.

Agreed, but I have to say that he is on my last nerve with all this insinuation that he's not going to play all out.
Or that he wouldnt move to LT possibly if there was an injury and how he has to play differently so he doesnt get hurt.

Agreed with ACP, what he says and what he does are two different things. He has a 16+ game audition for one last big payday, that appears to be what's most important to him at this time.

He's just posturing. He's playing for a new contract this year, no matter what he says.
I hope your right. He looked like he was just going through the motions last night. A part of me is concerned his lackadaisical play spills over into the early part of the season.
First off, Faneca isn't stupid. He knows he's playing for a big contract so he is going to play hard to show he still has it. Secondly, Faneca is competitor -- he wants to win as bad as anyone and isn't going to go through the motions and let defensive linemen push him around. If Faneca doesn't play well this season then it will only give credence to the thought that he is slipping.

I think FWP is in for a BIG year, looks like Ben is going to be throwing to the backs more thean he ever has, and giving him the ball out in space will mean more big plays.

Willie Reid NEEDS to stop muffing punts, it is getting REAL old, I think they should let Wilson handle the PR duties at this point...

Timmons didn't impress at all, he looked like he was getting swallowed up by blockers, I hope this is not a sign of things to come, but Woodley has looked great, thank goodness.

Batch is about as solid a backup as there is in the league, he impresses me every time he is on the field.

FWIW, I read that game before last, Timmons was put in at places that he didn't really have to worry about assignments and such. He was put in for packages that he was comfortable with in his limited practice time. Last nite, he was put in his full-time position and thrown to the wolves. Aside from getting shrugged by Hunt on the sideline, I thought he played fairly well. He was about a step slow on most plays, but he plays much faster. He'll speed up significantly when he stops thinking so much. Agreed, Woodley has far exceeded my expectations (and I'm a Wolverine fan).

Agreed. His athleticism is obvious. Just needs to go through the learning curve. His ability to run with backs and receivers and tackle sideline to sideline give him plenty enough upside to justify patience. I don't think pressuring the passer will ever be his strong suit. Tomlin drew some indirect comparisons to Derrick Brooks, but I think a more fair comparison would be Ernie Sims. Plenty of speed, ferocious hitter, needs reps.I hated the Woodley pick, and I'm not sold yet, but he is showing me far more than I expected. Definitely hope I'm wrong with my initial impression.

Faneca seems like a nice enough guy, but apparently doesn't know when to just keep his mouth shut. I guess he's just like all the other athletes out there just trying to feed their families. What a shame that after making $20 million over the past 6 years that he's not guaranteed he'll make his $4 million this year. These guys really need to go out and buy some perspective.
He'll really be pissed if the Steelers franchise him.Anyhow, here's the latest chat with Ed Bouchette

Some excerpts...

Steelforce: Is there a real possibility Okobi could be released by Saturday?

Ed Bouchette: Yes. If he's not starting, he may not dress either and $2 million is a lot to pay for that. I think they might roll the dice and go younger with Marvin Philip, who also has been playing guard, as the backup to Sean Mahan.

Me_Likes_Cookies: If (when?) Kreider is cut, how long will it take for another AFC North team to sign him? A day? A few hours? The Steelers are crazy if they let him go.

Ed Bouchette: I don't think Dan Kreider will be cut.

GjSteel: Hi Ed. In regards to the running back situation: do you think the Steelers will pick for this year only and try and see if they can get Gary Russell on the practice squad, thus exposing losing him or will they cut one of the Vets? Who do you think is going to stick?

Ed Bouchette: I think it comes down to Russell or Verron Haynes.

datruth4life: Ed, my final five rbs are Parker, Kreider, Davis, Davenport and Russell. Will this be the final five, in your opinion? If not, how close is V. Haynes to making this team?

Ed Bouchette: I'm going with what you have.

chrisG: Even if the parties could agree, do the Steelers even have the cap room to comfortably sign Faneca to a top 7 G contract? Ed Bouchette: Yes, they can make room if they need it.

Well Its been a while fellas, let me tell ya how I see it,

IN

Tomczak's PreSeasonWrap

a.Haynes Out. Russ IN

b.Faneca should have been traded, makes the whole line lazier.

c.Washington In, Young Out

d.Gay may be gone as much as hes impressed. Coughlough looks to make it

e.Deshea is still the man until someone steps up

f.Woodley becomes what we hoped Kendrell would be

g.Timmons will be starting by mid season

h. all 3 Qbs make it.

i. starting line, Starks, Smith, Mahan, Fanny, Colon

f. okobi = gone

g. the kid punter scares me now after that 10 yard shank, I remember what Cowher did to Miller for a 20 yarder.

Ahhh, welcome back Tomczak though I am not sure how long you'll be around...a) Agreed.b) Only if they could have gotten value. Otherwise I would rather keep Faneca.c) Agree although I think Young should make the team and Reid be cut.d) Gay has made the team. Colclough has actually looked pretty good in preseason so I would cut Chidi.e) McFadden has been given his chances but is having a hard time beating out Townsend for some reasonf) Kindrell was great until the injuries took their toll. Let's hope Woodley doesn't suffer the same fateg) I thought Timmons look okay last week considering how much time he's missed but I don't see him starting this season unles there is an injury.i) No way Starks is beating out Simmons. Has Startks even played at Guard?f?) Agreed. They're not going to pay Okobi $2+ million to beackup Mahan. He's gone.g?) Sepulveda has had a great camp & preseason. One shanked punt doesn't undo all of that.

If that's a left to right lineup, that's :lmao:
Forgot about simmons. Take Starks outta there. Also, I am NOT impressed with Reid. Speed kills though.I don't know why Chidi would be made a captain and cut, but stranger things have occurred I suppose.
l-r lineSmith, Faneca, Mahan, Simmons, Colon.Reid would be good if he consistently catch punts. But he can't so... maybe practice squad. :rolleyes:Chidi: great ST player, not much else.

Off topic... But why are you banned?

I am not disagreeing with you but I really haven't been impressed with Reid when he does catch the ball. I would rather have either Wilson (too many FCs but good hands and an occassional nice return) or Holmes (sometimes has problems holding onto ball too but a better return man).I just have not seen anything from Reid that impresses me.

Most starters will only play in the first quarter of tonight's game and maybe just a series or two so there isn't much to get excited about.

Here are a couple things I will be looking at though:

1) Willie Reid returning punts. For my money this guy has been a major disappoint this preseason. His return average is a pawltry 4.9 yards and he's already muffed a punt or two. As a receiver he is buried in the depth chart behind Nate Washington, a FA from Tiffin College. Yesterday Tomlin said "I challenged Willie this morning in front of his peers. that's part of it, man. We'll see what he brings. I expect him to bring it because he's a competitor." He probably has made the team but if he has a bad showing he could play himself out of a job. Walter Young isn't a return man but I like him as a receiver more than Reid.

2) There has been a lot of talk about Chukki Okobi being cut or asked to take a pay cut to remain on the team. It should be interesting to see how he plays tonight.

3) I think we'll get a feel for what the Steelers are going to do at RB. If you don't see a lot of Gary Russell it could mean the Steelers are going to try to sneak him on the practice squad. If he does get playing time then I think he has made the team and they'll want to look at him on 3rd downs to see what kind of a blocker and receiver he is -- they already know he is a good runner. I do think we'll see a lot of Verron Haynes in any case in the second half. There is no point risking injury to the backs you want to keep and it will give Haynes a chance to audition for a spot on another team.

4) Timmons missed a few tackles last week but I thought he played pretty well considering it was his first extensive outing. He is still raw and needs lots of reps so I am looking forward to watching this game to see how he progresses.

5) It would be nice to see the first team offense move the ball on the first drive and cap it off with a Ben Roethlisberger TD pass. Likewise it would be nice to see the starting defense force a fumble or interception while they are out there.

Agreed. All those 3-and-outs for the 1st team D is getting pretty boring. :goodposting:

Is it me, or has William Gay been involved in just about every turnover this pre-season? The guy has forced fumbles, recovered them, and picked off passes. He just seems to know where to be.

He has been Johnny-on-the-spot all preseason. He is going to make the team and either Chidi or Colclough (who has actually looked pretty good) are going to get cut.

I really hope that St. Pierre is cut. He is not worthy of a roster spot. I would rather them sign Troy Smith if the Ravens cut him if Tomlin is sold on 3 qbs. Looks like Reid has stepped up and responded to Tomlin calling him out so far.

missed the gameanyone want to run down some quick observations?tia
Offensive starters played 1 series, FWP 1 play.Faneca got blown up by Jenkins. I'm a little concerned about the way he's looked in preseason.Russell and Haynes both ran well.Timmons looked good, showed nice speed running down Williams from the back side.Reid probably did enough to make the roster. Not much else to report.

I have no problem with players arguing for the most money they can get, because that money is going to the NFL anyways, and I rather it goto the people getting the crap beat out of them playing the game than anyone else.

I was watching the game with the guy that told me about Faneca having a "procedure" on his shoulder in a hospital a couple of weeks ago. When that guy blew past Fanny, my buddy said "I told you Faneca isn't 100%". Then when they showed Faneca on the sideline with his ice on his shoulder he said "You believe me now?". So I am pretty much convinced that Faneca did have some kind of work on his shoulder. I don't think he reinjured it last night, they probably were just keeping ice on it after he was done, but I really don't think he is back to full speed yet.

Because the FBG feel intimidated by a real former NFL QB posting on this board.

Game is on Sat AM at 11 (eastern) on NFLN.
Saturday or Sunday? I can't check the schedule from work, but I thought I remembered it being on Sunday.
SAT stands for saturday, chief.
I know SAT means Saturday. I checked the NFLN schedule a month ago and I thought the game was on Sunday. What I'm asking is if the game is actually Sat or Sun (one of us got the date wrong). I'm not sure if you are verifying the game is on SAT or if you are trying to teach me how to read.I guess it's not a big deal as I can check the schedule when I get home, but I'd like to make plans as soon as possible since it's in the middle of the day on the weekend.... mkay?

Right on, didn't mean to sound like a jerk there, I felt I had to say somethin tho. I havent checked so I didnt know the date was wrong. Cheers, bring on the Brownies.

If I recall Holmes returned some punts last year...is he in line for that duty this year or has his ascension into the starting ranks relieved him of those duties?
