Steelers catch Dolphins as winningest team this year? (1 Viewer)

Since the NFL merger in 1970 the Dolphins have long been the winningest team.

That run is just about to come to an end.

1. Miami = 353 wins.

2. Pittsburgh = 348 wins.

With seven games to go in the '07 season.

Personally I think 2008 is when the passing of the torch will occur. Along with a bit more fanfare in the offseason and the lead up.

But the Dolphins need to get busy and win a game or three.

But it's real possible that the Steelers could overtake them this year when you include the playoffs (down by only four, 373-to-369) in the overall wins scenario. See post below.

Pardon in miscalculations. Used two sites (including pro-football-reference.com) and an external Steeler thread.

The NFL didn't begin in 1970.

So what's the point. NE has won the most games since 2006.

I didnt set the time frame for the winningest team accolade. Its been the Dolphins forever. The "date" has been set at 1970, and thats the way it is.

The point is, when discussing the winningest team ever (which happens in NFL circles), the subject matter is about to have a face lift. And thus when discussing things NFL related here in the shark pool, I figured it was worth noting for those who are NFL fans. Have you missed the "Dolphins are the winningest team in the NFL" being bandied about somewhat frequently for the past 30 years or something?

NFL started a long time before 1970. I haven't really heard much about the Dolphins since about 88' or so. So Pittsburgh has been great, so have a lot of teams.

Actually, when including the playoffs... The Steelers have already captured the top spot in total wins.

Steelers: 376-244

Dolphins: 373-241

Cowboys: 373-254

And Dallas is about to move into the #2 spot.

I don't know what you are talking about. When I think winningest team, first thought that comes to mind is the Chicago Bears. What are they at? 600 wins as a franchise? Halas? C'mon.

Just out of curiosity: does anyone have a list of NFL franchises, and total wins and losses? (All time). It would be interesting to look at...

Who has the most wins of the 21st Century? I'm betting it's Indy, but it could also be NE or Pittsburgh. I'd be very surprised if it was some other team...

I must have - I don't think I've ever heard this mentioned. And, I live in the greater Miami area too...

Who has the greatest winning percentage? I understand that total wins approximates the same thing but would be curious to see the difference.

As of the start of the 2007 season, Chicago has won the most games in NFL history with 686. Green Bay is second with 648 and the New York Giants are third at 612.

The Dolphins have a winning percentage of 0.585 in 633 games played, which is tops. The Cowboys at 0.576 and Raiders at 0.563 are 2nd and 3rd. Even the Browns at 0.539 have a better % than the Steelers 0.538.

Edited to note these are from 1945~

So they mean nothing.

i dont think total wins for a franchise mean anything anymore, in the superbowl era, it is all about superbowls. what is brought up is what franchise has the most superbowls, you here the 49ers , cowboys and steelers because they have 5, with the patriots hot on the trail if they win this year. to me, the amount of super bowls won for a franchise is what is talked about when describing winningist franchise. victories dont mean crap without a superbowl, just ask eagles fans.

What criteria would you like to use? Add something here.
here's the criteria I think is important: pro-football-reference link

This is the worst post in a truly awful thread. You should get an award or something.

Actually, when someone calls the Dolphins the winningest team of all time, they're usually referring to franchise winning percentage. Miami has won 58.5% of its games. Pitt has won 51.1%. I believe Miami's closest competitors are Dallas (57.6%) and Oakland (56.3%). Basically, it's going to take a lot more terrible seasons before either team catches the Dolphins.

Dang, I was beaten, although my winning percentages were all-time instead of just since 1945.

When looking at stats I think "all time" record trumps "since 1970" but I think looking at data since the merger is still interesting and valid. I mean it doesn't make a whole lot of sense comparing the stats of 1966 Dolphins to the 1966 Steelers since they weren't in the same league.

I would like to use this thread to point out that there should be an * next to the Steelers most recent Superbowl win. God those refs had to been from Pittsburgh. The Seabirds were the better team that day.

What is this "whine about Super Bowl XL day decade?" :lmao:
Fixed. Seriously guys, can we get a moratorium on whining about superbowl XL yet? There needs to be a one year statute of limitations on things like this.
