Steelers Defense is on pace to be arguably up there with... (1 Viewer)

'84 Bears

Ravens of '01 (or was it 2000?)

70's Steel Curtain

I think the avg yards per game and pts per game stats are on pace with these teams from the past. Could this Steelers Defense keep the pace and be with this legendary group of defenses listed above?

'84 Bears? What did they ever do that was so special?

Their defense isn't anything close to the defenses you mentioned above.
 If they were, then there would be a "0" next to CLE in this weeks scoreboard.Plenty of areas for improvement with the Steelers D.
The only held Anderson to around 130 passing yards and J. Lewis to < 50 rushing. !00% shut down the #4 offense in the NFL. Defense really only gave up 1 TD that was a legit scoring drive. Steelers spotted them 21 points with sloppy special teams and the Steelers O turning it over in their own redzone.Aside from the shutdown today, they have a shutout on the season and I think its been like 2 years now since Edge was the last RB to put up 100yds rushing on this defense. Pretty legendary just on the last factual statement.

They are actually doing pretty well statistically, but they have played a very easy schedule.

By far the most important stat is points, and so far they have given up 126 points in nine games, on pace for 224 points. And they have a good offense, so it's not like they are giving up cheap points off turnovers.

The 2000 Ravens gave up 165 points, and the 1985 bears gave up 198 points.

1) Giving up 28 points is not shutting them down 100%.2) I think the Dixie Chicks could hold J. Lewis to < 50 rushing.I think everybody would agree they are one of the best defenses in the NFL, but you chose to make a provocative and frankly unsupportable claim.

That Raven team who gave up 165 in a word was "smothering" As the game went on, it was hard for teams to even get a first down on them. They were great tacklers, if someone caught the ball they would immediately be tackled.

It's really hard to say what defense was the best. I remember the 85 Bears too but I was a young teenager at the time and viewed the game differently than I do now. I'd give the edge to the Ravens on D just because they did only give up a 165 points. That will be a tough record to break.

Three of Cleveland's TD were on a KO return, off a KO return inside the 5 and set up by a Big Ben interception deep in the Steelers end. The defense was outstanding today, the score doesn't tell the story.
Short field or not a shut down, historic Defense does not allow 3 Passing Tds with zero interceptions and sacks. A Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article this morning was saying the same thing, basically. I don't believe the hype, just yet.I love the the Steelers D, but I would be more impressed this weekend if they had more sacks and fewer TDs allowed.

OK here is the research I did for comparisions:

2000 Ravens

Avg points per game = 10.3

Avg yds per game = 259 yds per game.

1984 Bears

Avg. points per game = 15.5

Avg. yds per game = 277 yds per game

1976 Steelers

Avg. points per game 9.8

Avg. yds per game = 260

2007 Steelers (before Cleveland..stats not updated yet)

Avg points per game = 12.3

Avg. yds per game = 259 yds per game

Granted the Steelers defensive stats haven't been shredded yet by the Pats but their 1/2 way through the season and on pace with the best.

Why do you keep bringing up the '84 Bears?

The '84 Buddy Ryan 4-3 defense Bears are considered one of the best ever. I think their sack totals is what puts them up there with the best...points and yardage are good but not as good as the Ravens & 76 Steelers.

I'm obviously a Steeler fan and even I don't think they rank with the all time great defenses in NFL history. I think they are a very good defense this year, but not all-time great.

Their main problem as I see it is that they don't generate enough "pure" pass rush. When they choose to rush only 4 guys and play coverage, they don't get enough sacks. They played coverage a lot today against CLE and against Cincy a few weeks back, but I'm not sure that same amount of pressure is going to work when they play Brady.

We'll see.

steelers schedule = easiest in the league so far

how many top-10 teams have they faced? seriously, answer that question.

'85 was the Super Bowl team that you are thinking of. Buddy Ryan's defense was the 4-6, not the 4-3 and don't tell anyone, but Tobin's defense in '86 was statistically better that the '85 team.

1977 Atlanta Falcons

Average yards per game = 260

Average points per game = 9.2

Winners. Add in the fact that their offense was absolutely PUTRID, leaving them in a lot of horrible situations, and they still pulled off those numbers, and it's even more impressive. Best scoring defense in football history, in terms of points allowed per game.

It's the 46, not the 4-6. #46 was Doug Plank, who played the hybrid Safety/LB which the 46 was built around.

yep-The 4-6 was put in there because of how he put 4-3.

Steelers play NE away, and Jax at home. The only serious challenges upcoming.@NYJ, Miami, Cin, @Stl, and @Balt round out the schedule. The easy schedule knock will persist all season. Ya play what they give ya though. Do all AFC North stats come with this caveat? They may challenge for some of the elite D stats simply due to the horrible offenses they will face.

They're very schizophrenic this year. One week, they'll completely shut someone down (Seattle, B-More, Cleveland week 1) and the next they lay an egg(Denver). Definitely not the best ever, but you could make a strong argument for the best in the league this year.

Maybe Pittsburgh isn't the schizophrenic one... maybe Denver is. Blown out by SD, then a win against Pitt and an overtime game against Green Bay, then blown out by Detroit, then a very solid win against KC. Pitt just happened to catch Denver on an up week.
