Steelers DST - How will they be for the rest of the season? (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
The Steelers DST is still #3 in the NFL in total defense but close to last in takeaways. They've had some injuries but should be healthier in the next few weeks. They play against the Browns at home in week 14 and have the Rams at home in week 16. Fantasy gold?

steelers homer here. the end of the season schedule is quite soft. i tried to acquire the Pgh defense after the brutal start (week 4) but the owner wouldn't sell. i can't say what the value is, but i'd be buying the steelers defense.

Thanks. Trying to decide whether to trade Torain for the Steelers D. Seems like the turnover numbers are bound to start increasing. They had 21 interceptions last year and only 2 so far this year.

Quite a few positions in major flux due to injuries (both recent and healing). Figure some of the steeler nation can come in and read the tea leaves on what all these changes mean facing a reeling ravens team, that absolutely clobbered this D on opening day. You have to imagine the coaches are kicking the players asses this week and we will see a much better effort from an embarrassed and proud Steeler D.

LB | James Harrison | Pittsburgh Steelers | Injury

Pittsburgh Steelers LB James Harrison (eye) has been cleared to practice, but he is not expected to play in Week 9. "He has been cleared to practice and that is where we are," head coach Mike Tomlin said. "We will re-evaluate the situation at some point later in the week and let that be our guide in terms of potential participation. But right now I just want to be clear that he has been cleared to practice."

LB | LaMarr Woodley | Pittsburgh Steelers | Injury

Pittsburgh Steelers LB LaMarr Woodley (hamstring) is not ruling himself out for the team's Week 9 game versus the Baltimore Ravens. "Everybody counting me out ... don't count me out yet. Big game on Sunday," Woodley said. Head coach Mike Tomlin said Woodley's availability this week will depend on his practice status.

The Steelers D wasn't very good that day, but clobbered is kind of strong. They were a victim of the offense, which committed 156 turnovers and actually punted on first down 6 times.

I've cut them loose after wasting a dynasty roster spot on them all off season.. Then they were immediately re-acquired by someone else.

poor move. They have underperformed, and had two real stinkers (week 1 and week 4) but in my three leagues they are ranked 12, 13, 14. certainly not an every week start, but a decent plug in with a good second half of the season schedule, especially in the playoffs.

Actually I dropped them to pick up Buffalo D, and started Buffalo D this past week... So it worked out quite nicely.. I also have Giants DIn this league:Bills D ranked #5Giants D ranked #9Steelers D ranked #27Seems like a great move if you ask me...

Steelers | James Harrison listening to doctors

Wed, 02 Nov 2011 22:47:47 -0700

Pittsburgh Steelers LB James Harrison (eye) said Wednesday, Nov. 2, that he is relatively pain-free, but he is listening to doctors, and won't play in Week 9 if doctors don't feel he is well enough to go. "I got two eyes, I'm not playing with my vision," Harrison said. "If they say no, I'm not going. That's not something I'm willing to lose."

James Harrison - LB - Steelers

Steelers OLB James Harrison (eye) is listed as probable for Week 9.

Harrison said earlier in the week that he wouldn't play against the Ravens, but he will so long as he pasts an eye test on Saturday. Harrison's probable listing and full practice Friday suggest the Steelers are now counting on him.

This was the only thread I could find on the topic by searching, and thought maybe it could be expanded to include more general thoughts on trading players for team defenses. It's something I've really never considered before so I don't know how to value it. I'm fortunate enough to have a very strong starting roster with some solid depth, and the only position I can really see myself improving at is DEF/ST where I've been matchup-focused with mixed results lately. The SF owner in my league could use another starter but I'm struggling on figuring out value...and don't want to focus this solely on my team. Anyone have general thoughts on this?

Once it becomes clear at this point in the season which DST's are very good/elite, I think they have a lot of value, especially if your league rewards a significant # of points for low yards allowed and low points allowed. In that case, defenses can easily score 20-25 points. So, I'm willing to trade pretty solid players/starters to acquire an elite DST if it will improve my overall starting lineup. I wouldn't be afraid to trade an RB3 or WR2, for example, if I had the depth to do so an the elite DST had a good playoff matchup (that's critical, though - DST's tend to be much more matchup-dependent than some other positions like RB).
