thanks for starting the topic. I too want some opinions and in the absence of an opionion of my own yet,,,here are the facts that we have to work with:

A. Santonio Holmes has been the second most productive WR for PIT this year.

B.

WR Washington, WR Holmes, Fill In For WR Ward

Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - [Full Article]

WR Nate Washington will start at flanker for WR Ward but rookie WR Santonio Holmes also will get work there, HC Bill Cowher said. Holmes has played at split end, alternating every third series with starter WR Cedrick Wilson.

C. PIT is playing TB which is known for giving up the big pass play and an easy matchup for QB's.

D. Rothlisberger took a pounding last week and may suffer residual effects of a reaggrivated concussion from earlier in the year as well as whatever head trauma he incurred from his motorcycle accident and may not be sharp.

My question: How much weight do you put on the #2 performer vs the guy filling the vacated position? Will the throws go to the more familiar WR or the more familiar routes? Any examples would be appreciated.

BTW, I just voted to go with Holmes based upon his previous performance and if I had to pick somebody up and play them this week, he'd be the guy.

This is a good question, but I think the looks will go the the more familiar face. Even though Washington is filling in for Ward and will be running the same routes, the routes won't actually be the same. Washington will not be as crisp, and won't get the same seperation as someone like Ward can get. I think Holmes will see the majority of the looks because he is familiar, and Rothleisberger knows where he's going to be.

Cedric Wilson has been an occasional deep option *note how I didnt say threat* for the steelers the past few years. Hes not the fastest or greatest reciever, in fact not even close, but hes not awful. Against a cushy defense I like him to run the deep routes. He may be able to break something big and even score....if he doesnt fumble first...

Holmes has been an aggravation to most Pittsburgh fans this year. On Kickoffs he was removed, since he gave away more points than the defense early in the season...On punts he makes steeler fans cringe every time. As a receiver, he has talent, which he has shown, when his head is in the game and he runs the correct routes he can do some damage. Look for him to take the punishing routes over the middle, averaging 10-15 ypc. He probably will get the most looks.

Washington is a 3rd option at WR. He makes some great catches, in clutch situations. He makes some easy drops as well. Hes what he is....a young WR with alot to learn. Im expecting we see him alittle more than usual against tampa. He has potential to get his looks against the bucs, but expecting anything more than 60 yards is ludacris.

Look for Santonio Holmes production to really go up in the next couple of weeks. The steelers are out of playoff contention and will be looking to develop there younger players ( especially Holmes) for next season.
