Steelers Trade Mahan for 2009 Draft Pick PITTSBURGH ― The Steelers traded veteran center Sean Mahan to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for an undisclosed 2009 draft pick, the team announced today. Mahan, a six-year veteran, signed with the Steelers prior to the 2007 season as an unrestricted free agent from the Buccaneers, who selected him in the fifth round (168th overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft. Mahan started all 16 games in the regular season and the Steelers’ only postseason game in 2007. The Steelers presently have 52 players on their active roster and will be able to add one more player prior to Sunday’s (Sept. 7) season opener against the Houston Texans at Heinz Field.

Wow! The Bucs must be looking for a fill in for Joseph. I can't believe the Steelers were able to pull that one off. The Bucs will soon learn that it would be better to suffer with 3rd round pick Zuttah than a guy that lets more stuff through than a New Orleans levy in a hurricane.

Who's going to play the role of revolving door this year?looks like it was for a 7th rounder
The Bucs have not asked Mahan to re-adjust his salary.
How do trades work in the NFL? Does this mean the Steelers unloaded his salary along with him?
As I understand it (which isn't very well), The bucs take on the remaining portion of his contract and salary, Pittsburgh is just left holding however much of his ~$4M bonus hasn't been paid yet.

Early birthday present for me. Excellent.

I'd almost have been willing to give the Bucs a 7th rounder to take Mahan. This way makes it even nicer.

Read an unsubstantiated blurb someplace that the dude "demanded a trade" when he was made a backup. :goodposting: I guess it worked for him, but I didn't realized repeatedly getting shoved into Roethlisberger's man-bubble for 17 games gave one enough pull to "demand" anything. Duely noted.

The Chuck is still a FA. I read were he had a workout with the Rams on the 26th, IIRC.....and wasn't offered a contract after he took their physical. As bad off as they are on the OL, he must be pretty damn far away from contributing if they didn't sign him.Still, he and Anderson's names were the first I thought of when I saw they offloaded not only Mahan, but his contract as well. They clearly need an OT right now more than they need a C(although The Chuck could play G, of course) since it seems that Hartwig is coming back nicely from his injury woes.*knock wood*I was surprised to realize Anderson was 33 when he got cut the other day. He sure seems like he's been around forever, but I thought he was a bit younger. Still, if he had a year or so left in him........

We can only hope.If so, Colon to RG? Simmons to his proper spot on the bench?
That's what I'd hope they'd do. I mentioned in another thread that I just don't get why Simmons' starting spot is "guaranteed" other than the contract he signed last offseason. Hell, if they're willing to bench 7 million dollar man Starks, what's the problem with benching the guy who hasn't played that well since his rookie season? If the Steelers could somehow manage to find a better RT I think Colon should immediately be given every opportunity to drive Simmons to the bench(which shouldn't be that hard).

Simmons is the only OL I have ever watched that routinely falls down in his backpedal. Untouched. It's awful.Generates zero push in the run game. Two steps back for every one step forward. With or without a new signing, I wish they'd simply insert Starks at RT, Colon at RG. Starks can be no worse on the end in pass pro than Colon was last season and he is at least a dominant run blocker.Arians and Zierlein are idiots when it comes to the run game and designing a OL scheme.

While I agree with you, in that I think they should just put Starks back at RT and move Colon inside where he belongs, Starks is far from "dominant" at anything. He SHOULD be a dominant run blocker with his size, but more often than not he's "just a guy." It's why I was totally  :jawdrop: that they dicked around long enough to wind up forking over 7 million dollars for his services this year.
