I sure hope not because I'm a huge fan. I like the looks of the trailer and while I would have rather seen a straight interpretation of the books I understand why they did what they did and I'm looking forward to it.  What gives me the most hope this is going to be good is the fact that Ron Howard is executive producer behind it. He's been trying to get this done for years and its a bit of a passion project for him. He's a legit filmmaker so it gives me hope this will be interesting.

Im just worried it's going to be a paint by number's action movie and got do well enough to get any sequels made that will allow the full story to be told

 
In September 2016, Entertainment Weekly reported that following the release of the film, a TV series set within the same continuity is scheduled to be released in 2018. Both Elba and Taylor are set to reprise their roles as Roland and Jake respectively. Reportedly the series will potentially fill in the backstory to the film, being based on King's The Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass, and star a younger actor playing a young Roland.[73]

That sounds awesome. Wizard and Glass is my favorite book in the series - love the back story.

 
Anyone know where to get the audiobooks for this series on the free? :popcorn:

EDIT: Nevermind found the DVD Audio MP3 disc on Ebay for $20. 150 hours long... jesus

Audible.com (owned by Amazon) usually has enough free promos to get you at least half of the books on the Audible app,

I'm going back through the DT books on there now after just having listened to The Stand and It again and Justin Cronin's Passage Trilogy before going back to those.  Also did the whole Mr. Mercedes trilogy on Audible too.  (I spend a decent amount of time on the road and also listen while I'm mowing the lawn, etc.)

It's been way too many years since i read the books, so I just bought the eBay audiobook. I'll try to get through it all before August!

 
So after seeing a few of the trailers posted here, I was def going to see it but kind of underwhelmed. 

However, I just saw a trailer in the spiderman movie and can't wait. Trailer was awesome on the big screen.  Will be interesting to see the angle they take.

 
I'm very excited to see this.  I made my daughter start reading this series when she was a senior in high school (she's now 24).  She called me when the trailer broke and said "Dad!  You and I are going to see this together, RIGHT??"

Got a slow start but through 3 books now (just wrapping up Waste Lands). Hoping to get through 2 more before the movie. We shall see! 

 
I'm just starting to read the second book. I really wanted the Gunslinger to be awesome but I thought it was only a bit above average. I'll stick with it. 

 
So bummed to hear the early reviews but also not surprised.   To make this work they needed to go the lord of the rings direction, all in.   Short cutting this epic tale it was destined to fail.

Totally agree. This is exactly what I was afraid of. They "needed" to hook viewers in order to get the rest of the planned films/TV series made, so rather than do a faithful adaptation, they tried to do a highlight reel of a film and bricked it. This is going to bomb and the ambitious project they envisioned is going to die on the vine. 

HBO series with more unknown actors, a la Game of Thrones was the way to go here. Money was always the issue with adapting this and likely killed it.

I had plans to see it this weekend but probably won't now. That (what I represent) should be concerning to the people behind this movie because I was money in the bank for them. Read all the novels as they were released, this series was part of my life for decades. 

If they can't get the "popcorn flick" summer crowd either, they're in deep ####.

Yeah I mentioned in another thread.   After seeing the trailer I was like I don't remember anything from the books....and found out its a "sequel"

We shall see

Mike Ryan over at UPROXX annihilated it. He does preface his review by stating he's never read the books and would like to hear a reader's opinion, but he said he had no idea what was going on and why.

Like EG, I've been with story from the beginning and I really wanted to see it come to life but this sounds really bad.

 
It does not surprise me. I said it earlier. All commercials look bad. But the trailer I saw in Spiderman gave me hope. 

Agree with everyone that they screwed the pooch by not going cable. Could have been epic. Now if they do it, they will have to write this movie off and pretend it didnt happen

 
I'm halfway through The Wastelands. Really digging the story. Even being nowhere near the end of the books, I can now see why you guys thought an HBO series would be best.

Is it safe to say Idris Elba just isn't a movie star?  Seems fine on the small screen, but anytime he's in a movie he goes over like getting socks for Christmas.

Just based on the reviews I've seen (from both book readers and non-), the problem isn't Elba but the writing/directing. In fact, even many of the most cutting reviews single him out as about the only thing good in the film.

 
Saw it last night during a preview screening. 

Roeper's review does a nice job of summing up the bad and ugly of this movie.

That being said, if you have zero expectations for this, it is not dreadful.  Just don't go in expecting much.

Hard for fans not to expect much and that's the problem with these types of adaptions. Huge King fan, Huge DT fan and I had high hopes for it about five years ago. At this point I just hope I don't come out hating it. What really concerns me is that King, Bev Vincent, and Robin Furth are saying how great it is and almost everyone else is saying it blows. I guess I am being naive (except for with King) but I trust Vincent and Furth when it comes to their reviews and writings.
