What do you know about Steptoe?

Romeo says he's going to start against Cincinnati.

-Steptoeless in less in Detroit

He has quick feet and decent hands. He's listed as 5'9" and 200 pounds, but he blocks like a 150 pounder. If it wasn't for injuries, I don't know if he would be playing.

He's been starting/playing all year. There's probably a reason why no one has talked much about him yet.

He's basically a practice squad/ 3rd stringer who has been elevated due to injury. Hasn't been evry impressive, but then noone has on that offense so far.

Injury replacement player, nothing else. But yes, you should drop Randy Moss for him.
If I had Randy Moss I would have traded him after week one for Brandon Marshall, then I'd be starting Marshall tomorrow and wouldn't be worring about how to fill in for Moss' bye-week along with the shortage incurred by the injured Kevin Curtis, Donte' Stallworth, Bobby Engram. But I don't, and the waiver wire is thin, so just asking about Steptoe... Thanks.

He will be starting opposite Braylon Edwards but he's simply not very good. Baltimore rolled coverage over to WR Braylon Edwards and TE Kellen Winslow and was the first team to basically shut down Winslow, Edwards has not been the same WR this season ever since his foot got clipped by WR Donte' Stallworth. Steptoe has been the beneficiary of single coverage but he's overmatched and isn't a good route runner and their has been some miscommunication. He has not been a good play but the Browns faced, Dallas (#9 in defense in the NFL), Pittsburgh (#2), and Baltimore (#1), so the entire offense faced tougher matchups all across the board. The running game wasn't getting untracked and the Browns offensive coordinator (Rob Chudzinski) abandoned the run even before the team fell behind last week and had to abandon the run the first two weeks when the Cowboys and Steelers took big leads. Chud was criticized for abandoning the run after halftime when the Browns had a 10-7 lead. He was calling passes on first down and Jamal only got a dozen carries. After the game Jamal was angry and when asked about what he thought of only getting 12 carries he replied "the was pathetic". The Browns offense is ranked dead last in the league. They are still having timing problems in the passing game but Jamal and the running game was starting to show life last week. Look for Chud to start off with two TEs and try to pound the ball. If he has success then Steptoe probably won't see lots of opportunities. If the Bengals start off crowding the box as they did against the G-men last week trying to stop Brandon Jacobs then look for Chud to try and isolate either Winslow or Edwards but if that still isn't working then their was a mention of backup RB Jerome Harrison being used more. He scored last week on a screen and had a big reception against the Steelers the week prior. Also Jamal Lewis has been effective as a check-down receiver.Steptoe isn't a good option even if the Bengals defense appear to be a much better matchup than, Dallas, Pittsburgh, or Baltimore. I wouldn't expect him to break out or be highlighted in the game plan. If anything the game plan would try to run the ball and work in, RB Jerome Harrison, Jamal Lewis, or even FB Laurence Vickers, more into the passing game this week unless Steptoe suddenly busts out but I wouldn't count on that happening. I would expect a conservative game plan built on the running game. If the Bengals crowd the box trying to stop Jamal then either Braylor or KWII should have a one-on-one matchup. Braylon has been struggling but its far more likely that he would bust out of his funk rather than expect Steptoe to step-up.Just my humble opinion.

Thanks Bracie. Nice write-up. I think I'm still going to start him over Demetrius Williams, but now I know what to expect.-Wile E.
