Steve Smith - anyone benching him and if so for who? (1 Viewer)

I am debating on benching Steve Smith for Cotchery this weekend.

How does anyone else here feel about the new Testaverde / Smith connection?

I know Steve is a game breaker and as elite as a WR can be - but come on - 3 days of practice before starting an NFL game? I am thinking about taking a wait and see approach.

Anyone else?

3 days of practice and I still like Vinny over Carr. I am starting him.

Trade him for Edge James in a PPR league.

If not I was debating sitting him in a start-3 WR league and going with threesome of

Ocho Cinco, Braylon Edwards, and Dwayne Bowe.

I get your point, but really, how much worse could Vinny be - compared to the disaster Carr offers? If he can just take a 5 step drop and find a way to get Smith the ball w/ a little space on a slant or whatever, we'll be fine.

@ ARI isn't the easiest matchup, but unless you have a SOLID option, I can't see benching him.

Yeah, the CAR QB situation is ugly right now, but I don't think I could ever bench Smith. He has the potential to explode whenever he touches the ball. I'm not going to give up on him unless he turns into Lee Evans over the next few weeks.

I have no alternatives this week. Marshall and Holmes on byes, Boldin gimping, so it's Smith and a barrel of crap.

I happen to like the switch to Vinny. He won't know everything about the offense, but I guarantee he knows who he should throw the ball to. The potential problem is that they might just try to run it 50 times. But I doubt they get the lead to do this.

Eh why not?

I've got Smith and Holt going for me this week with Cotch and SMoss on the bench.

Vin > Carr

Gus > injured Bulger

You drafted him high...either roll with your choices and die with the backups, right?

I have Steve Smith and will be starting him with confidence.

I actually may start Vinny :kicksrock:

I have Harrington, but fear he could get off to a rocky start and get the axe early.

My, my, how things have changed. Never did I ever think I'd look at the Arizona defense as anything other than a must start. Now gotta consider benching players against them? What's next, the Browns might have an offense?

I don't own Smith, but if I did, I'd play him regardless.

I recall a few years ago when rookie shlub Ryan Fitzpatrick started for the Rams when Bulger was hurt, and Holt still produced good numbers. Smith is also an elite receiver, and while he may be a bit up and down without Delhomme, can still do some damage regardless of who is throwing the ball.

Huh? What does this have to do with the original post? Please answer mine. TIA.
It's a Steve Smith post. And I said I was thinking of sitting him for Dwayne Bowe / Braylon Edwards before I got rid of him.

Same situation here - Holt and Smith will start for my squad and Cotchery will sit. Throw the deep ball Vinny.

He still should be a solid play against mediocre to bad teams.....which is about the entire NFC and 1/2 the AFC. I don't see how you can bench him unless you're in an 8 team or 10 team league where you may have 2 outstanding WR's already.

Many leagues are 12 team and 14 team and you start 3 wr's. In those situations it's almost an automatic start.

16 team league, start 3 WRs. Starting him this week, as I have every week.

I have him in a 12-team, PPR league. I have to start him this week with Walker and McDonald on byes and Branch hurt. However, as I've said in other Smith threads in a start-3 WR league I think you have to roll the dice with him each week unless you're stacked at WR. But in a start-2 WR league I'd sit him if I had two Top 20-25 WRs who have been more consistent. Smith's talent at this point is not the issue - it's his lack of production.

That said, it really is a sad reflection on Carr's ability that I think a 99-year-old Vinny Testaverde might actually help Smith's potential this week.

I think Carr is gonna play. While he was here in Houston you can knock him for a lack of QB heart but that is one tough SOB and if he can walk he's gonna play. I'm sure of it.

I think the smart move for the Panthers is to sit Carr so he's ready for the playoffs. I'm fine with giving him the next 11 games off just to error on the side of caution.

I am not starting him. I'll be starting Dwayne Bowe instead without even a blink.

I cannot imagine the Carolina passing game having any success this week, and I find the Footballguys.com projection for him absolutely ridiculous. Smith has had three games now without eclipsing 50 yards and he has only accumulated 89 yards total! And magically this week he is going to bust out and produce 79 yards.

It does not matter which QB is in there this week. Moore, Testaverde, or Carr. There will be no timing, no synchronization. On top of the fact that none of these QB's is going to command any respect from the Arizona Defense and S. Smith will see double coverage on every play. He will be lucky to have even a single catch for 10 yards at the end of the day.

If VT is the starter, you will be loving Steve Smith.

The one thing Vinny can do is throw well, he can't move, but he will be able to throw until he dies, and he will lock and load on Smith.

He did it his one season in Dallas, but hey he was only 40 then...

This is really the only reason to have any optimism about Smith at all this week. Vinny is smart enough to realize he needs to get the ball to Smith frequently. Unlike Carr, he won't ignore his best option or look to run - Vinny can't run so that isn't going to be an option. I would expect Smith to get double digit targets if Vinny starts. Now whether Vinny can make the throws to get the ball to Smith ...

The Carolina playbook this week should consist of exactly 6 plays: slant to Steve Smith, fly pattern to Steve Smith, zero route to Steve Smith, handoff to RB, reverse to Steve Smith, and short pass to Colbert with a hook-and-lateral to Steve Smith.

S. Smith will see double coverage on every play.
And this is different from every other game Smith has played since Muhammad left how? Defenses rolling toward Smith isn't a new development. The new development is Delhomme's absence has removed the trust factor from the Carolina QB position with Smith. Carr won't make throws to Smith that Delhomme would make - both in terms of ability (Carr doesn't have the arm Delhomme does to make big plays downfield) as well as in terms of trust. Delhomme would throw the ball to Smith knowing Smith was going to go and get it no matter who was defending him. Carr will glance at Smith, see a guy within 10 yards of Smith and quickly look elsewhere or decide to do something else. Usually get sacked. If people didn't appreciate Jake Delhomme before I think they sure as hell are appreciating him now. He's been a very under-rated QB for years in my opinion and we're seeing just how important he is to the Carolina offense.

per Rotoworld & FBG News

David Carr returned to practice on Friday, and is expected to start.

Carr was listed as probable on Friday's injury report, but coach John Fox said that he will be a game-time decision. Expect him to start, but have a back-up plan just in case.

Well I guess that means we all should bench Smith. Carr is probably a better kicker than he is QB.

I drafted SMith as my #1 and Evans as #2 :lmao:

Wish I had that option. Byes and injuries mean Smith's in my lineup no matter who the QB is this week. Pretty sad when I'm hoping that maybe - just maybe - Smith can catch 5 passes for 50 yards in a game.

I'm leaning towards benching Smith in favor of Crayton. Granted NE is a tough matchup for him but the Cleveland passing game had a good week IN New England so I expect Crayton to put up good numbers. I think Crayton is the safer pick, Smith will either have another poor week or a huge week just by breaking one or two long ones like in week 1. Crayton may not have a HUGE game but I don't see him having a crappy game either.

Thinking hard about Berrian, Jennings, or Crayton over Smith. I'm going with Curtis and Bowe for sure. Just too much concern over the ancient arm on Vinny Testes.... But the weather in Chicago and GB looks to be raining.

Leaving Steve in. He's a player who can singlehandedly win a game for you. The same can't be said of my other options (Colston and Owen Daniels).
