Steve Smith CAR (1 Viewer)

The yards have been there but zero TDs through 4 weeks. What's the deal with this guy? Is he not a TD threat anymore?

I think he's more of a strong WR2 then a WR1.

Most of his TDs have come from distance and at 33 he may have lost a half step that prevents him from getting some of those longer scores. Due to his size he's never been a real redzone threat to make up for that either.

As you stated the yards have been fairly good and I think he will find the endzone some but CAR still doesnt have many other weapons around him in the passing game. Olsen is solid, a lot of people like Lefell but the jury is still out. Add in some of the inconsistency issues of Cam and the offense as a whole and I think you have a solid WR2.

As for WR-1 or WR-2 I am not sure, but last year when Cam ran the ball significantly in a game, it seemed to come at Smith's expense. I do not see a lot of CAR but reading the box score, it seemed to play out this way. Is/was Cam running because Smith was taken out of a play designed for him; I do not know. Smith is not going to put up huge numbers every week but he rarely gets the 0-fer.

No. I had him last year in all my leagues and enjoyed the value, but when I caught the back end of a run and ended up with him as my WR1 this year I was disappointed. Been trying to bump him down a level since. I don't always know how things will play out, but I saw this coming. Besides everything with Cam, he doesn't seem to be making nearly as many plays in space as he used to. He used to be good for a couple instances of turning quick hitches into long gains, not so much anymore.

I don't think he's ever been a WR1. Even in his best seasons, he was only a top-notch WR2. He's more of a low WR2/high WR3 nowadays.

Never owned him but played against him many times over the years and I don't think I can agree with that. There was a time when I DREADED playing against this guy because he was always one play away from a huge score and seemingly, to me anyways, always ended up with 6-8 catches and a TD more often than not.

False. In PPR Smith finished as WR8 in 2011 and 2008. In 2006 he was WR7 and in 2005 he was the #1WR in FF. So he was definitely a WR1 in his 4 best seasons.

Right now he is a low WR2/WR3 but that can change quickly, especially if he is able to find the endzone a few times. I still think he ends the year as a solid WR2.

ETA- Actually, discount 2009. That was the wrong Steve Smith.

He certainly has been a WR 1 back in 2005. Smith had a couple poor seasons with terrible QBs before they drafted Cam Newton. In Newtons rookie season Smith had 79 receptions 1,394 yards at age 32. He is currently on pace for 68 receptions 1392 yards which is pretty darn close to what he did last season. He just has not scored any TD yet.

I see him as more of a WR2 and finishing around the WR15-20 range this year. He's getting older and Newton won't throw for as many yards this season.

Why do you think that about Newton? He's on pace to match last year's total and his completion % is up from 60 to 63.5?

When Stewart and D-Will are both healthy, they don't throw as much. In the 2 games that Stewart's played in(weeks 2 and 4), Cam has thrown the ball 20 and 24 times for an an average of around 230 yards per game.

Right now Greg Olsen leads the Panthers with 31 targets. Steve Smith is 2nd on the team with 25. Cam Newton has thrown too many interceptions so far this season but his completion rate is 63% which is a slight improvement from last season. Also Cam Newtons yards/attempt is up to 9.47 from 7.84 yards/attempt last season.

Just be wary of those games. The defense came up with some huge turnovers and the opposition dropped a lot of balls. You'll still see plenty of games like week 1 and 3 we're Cam throws alot playing from behind. That said, I think you're on the mark with the 15-20 range.

Yeah, it's a very small sample size, but just something I noticed yesterday.

Really? Define WR1. It's fine to complain but to issue statements like this is just a waste of everyone's time. He was top 6 last year. 05-06 finished with 1500+ yards and 12 TDs. 08-09 1400+ yards and six TDs playing in only 14 games. The years between he never played 16 games and still finished with 1k+ yards and no fewer than 7 TDs.

Both Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell are suffering as Cam is averaging 100 less passing yds per game compared to this time last year. Is it Cam's fault or their fault? Having watched the games, Cam has made some pretty bad throws to both of these guys that have resulted in 4 of his 5 INTs. One example is this play: Cam INT vs. Giants

LaFell is open on that play. He would have caught it in stride past his man with only the safety to beat, and there is a decent chance it results in a 50 yd TD if Cam just puts it on the money instead of throwing it behind him.

Another Cam INT that should have been a LaFell TD: Cam INT 3 vs. Giants

Another misfire to Steve Smith that results in INT: Cam INT 2 vs. Bucs

All QB's make some bad throws, but Cam is making too many mistakes in the passing game. As Cam improves, so will Smith and LaFell.

Both Newton and Steve Smith are playing better per play this season vs last. Their issue seems to be the shift to a more run based offense taking away opportunities. Carolina's defense is so poor that I can't see that continuing for long. So I'd be buying Carolina players if I could get them for cheap.
