Reggie Wayne is not near as good without Peyton Manning... now you can say that is because the Colts aren't moving the ball well, and he is not getting as many targets ... but what would his career have looked like with a mediocre QB like Curtis Painter/Collins or even Jake Delhomme for the majority of his career??? My personal opinion is that Reggie's strengths which are route running and great hands make him a great WR in the NFL because he has had a Hall of Fame QB who just happens to be incredibly accurate
Steve Smith on the other hand.. has put up similar numbers to Reggie Wayne most years (excluding the years he was injured, Jake Delhomme's abysmal last year in Carolina/Jimmy Clausen).. what would his career have looked like if he had Peyton Manning or even Cam Newton at QB
The reason i bring this up is because Steve Smith is #2 in receiving yards... has had games of 178 yards, 156 yards, 15 yards (Cam was off and there a torrential downpour) , and 181 yards and if it weren't for Welker's ridiculous season thus far would most likely be leading the NFL in receiving yards and still might finish #1..it appears the sky is the limit for Steve Smith this year both literally and figuratively... Cam Newton is the perfect QB for Steve Smith because he buys time with his elusiveness and speed, which allows the elusive Smith to get even more wide open and allows him to get downfield.. and even better Cam can actually throw him the deep ball and does it multiple times a game... we are seeing the best version of Steve Smith this year...
has 530yds through 4 games with Cam Newton... had 554 yds in 14 games of 2010 season
While Reggie Wayne on the other hand... although continuing to make great catches and running his good routes... is not producing nearly as well as he has throughout his career because of the absence of Peyton Manning.. we are seeing the worst version of Reggie Wayne...
because both WR's are 32 years old, were rookies in 2001-2002 season, have had successful careers, and have completely different QB situations than in recent years...I think it brings a good comparison of how much a QB can impact a WR's numbers
so that begs the question who is the better WR?? Which one would you rather have???
