Steve Smith With Vinny Testaverde At QB? (1 Viewer)

It could happen. From RotoWorld:

The Charlotte Observer now acknowledges "uncertainty" surrounding David Carr's status for Week 6 due to a back injury. Car didn't practice Thursday.

The paper says there's a "legitimate chance" Carolina may be forced to start Vinny Testaverde against Arizona. Testaverde will have had a week in the offense by Sunday, so Carolina would probably skew to the run if he starts.

Anything would be better than Carr. I can't believe how bad he is. He didn't even look this bad in Houston.

I think Vinny can still get it done and rocket it in to Smith.

Signed,

Delusional Steve Smith Owner

I think Vinny is smart enough to know he needs to get the ball to Smith as often as possible. It's just highly questionable whether - at age 77 - he has the physical skills to make the necessary throws.

As a Smith owner, I'm just gonna laugh at all of this. Things can't get any worse for him so I might as well stay upbeat as his season gets flushed down the toilet.

Vinny probably will throw more INT's than Carr but he is DEFINATELY a better long ball thrower than David Carr.

I like Smith's chances more with Vinny than I do with Carr. Of course I'm basing this off of the last time we saw Vinny......if he's completely regressed since then I have no clue but since Carolina has signed him, I expect that he's somewhere within that form.

Ahhhhh... I still sit and reminisce about the good ole days in weeks 1 and 2. What could have been...
My four WRs that week were Smith, Walker, Branch and Bruce.Yea, those were the good old days all right. I'm getting teary-eyed just remembering them.

I can't imagine that Testeverde would come right in and start after just signing. If Carr is out for awhile, I would think they'd start Moore this week and let Vinny get up to speed. The team is 3-2 and still very much in the playoff hunt.

As a Panther fan I wouldn't mind seeing Matt Moore play this weekend if Carr can't go. Vinny just signed with the team, and I think Moore is probably in better game shape, plus I'd like to see what the kid can do. I also think Carr will improve during the season as he has more time to mesh with the offense. It's disappointing that Delhomme is out for the season, not only because he has great chemistry with Smith, but he has also been a great leader on the team.

I feel your pain packersfan. My lineup looked really good after the draft. Smith, Walker & Boldin. Not too mention Lamont Jordan :nerd: To top it off, the remaining bums on my team are on a bye this week. I think I may have to start Andre Rison at wideout this week.

Terry Mickens isn't available in your league?

The only way Vinny can be more of a disaster than Carr is if he hits Smith so hard with a pass that he breaks a rib. Seriously, I'm beginning to think that the only way Carolina can get the ball into Smith's hands is to do a direct snap. I really don't think Vinny at QB could be any worse. But then - I'm not a Carolina fan just a disgruntled Smith owner.

Considering Smith is one of the best WRs in the league at taking short screen passes and turning them into something big, I have to think he's still an every week starter even if he's not a true stud without Delhomme.

Steve Smith is Superman, but there is nothing to like about this situation. Vinny has thrown exactly 1 TD pass in two years. I don't understand why the Panthers didn't bring in Weinke. The one saving grace for Smitty is that the Panthers are in the playoff hunt, and I expect to see maximum effort and a ton of targets for Smith from here on out. I think Smith could produce borderline WR1 numbers with me throwing quick outs to him all game. And I throw like a girl.

I agree totally, my question is why wouldnt this happen?

Anyway you could get this plan out to Carr since he hasn't been able to accomplish this yet.

I watch games and think why on earth are they not doing this 5-6 times a game MINIMUM. It's absolutely idiotic. If they play doesn't work, most likely negative is a 2-3 yard gain. That's a pretty good risk-reward scenario.

If Carr learned to throw like a girl that'd be an upgrade for him.

As another homer.....I agree. Matt Moore looked really decent during the time he was in there last week. Impressive for a rook coming off the bench cold. I say try him out at least. Also agree that we should have picked Weinke back up. If Vinny actually plays for the Panthers, they truly are toast for the year.

It's bad. I'm starting Smith this week only because of bye week issues. In fact, I expect so little from Steve at this point, I'm actually starting him at tight end and moving Gates to receiver.

I don't understand why the Panthers didn't bring in Weinke.
The game last year when they had Weinke standing on the sidelines while they direct snapped it to the running back every play would probably offer a hint.
He did throw for over 400 against the Giants last year, however, and knows the system. Really, what is the upside in Testaverde?
He also threw over 60 balls that day and had 3 interceptions. Not to mention that the system this year is different than last year. The upside with Testaverde? There is none. The coaches are also hoping there is little downside. He has been around the block a few hundred times, and the Panthers just want someone who is hopefully going to be able to manage the team until Carr gets healthy. I personally would love to see Moore start, but knowing how conservative Fox is, I doubt he will let a rookie QB on the field unless he absolutely has to. This is the same coach who started Rodney Peete for a season, and who wouldn't let another rookie on the field last year when Weinke was playing so atrociously. I'm slowing getting off the Fox bandwagon. :cowher:

I was at that game. Most of that yardage was garbage time. He was horrible last year and the coaches know that. Re: knowing the system, Carolina has a totally new system this year with a new OC so no he doesn't know the system. In fact, Vinny has played in similar systems to this in NE and NY and has a better handle on it.

I remember taking Vinny T in the first round.

(He broke his ankle in the 1st quarter of week 1.)

You guys are nuts if you think Testaverde is going to start after being with the team for 5 days.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers quarterback David Carr missed practice for a second straight day Thursday with a sore back, increasing the chances 43-year-old Vinny Testaverde could start on Sunday at Arizona.

Testaverde, signed on Wednesday, and undrafted rookie Matt Moore, signed just over a month ago, took all the snaps in practice for the banged-up Panthers. Coach John Fox wouldn't say which QB he'd use if Carr can't play Sunday.

Carr became Carolina's No. 1 quarterback when Jake Delhomme left a win over Atlanta on Sept. 23 with a right elbow injury. Delhomme has since decided to undergo season-ending surgery.

Carr was injured when his back bent ackwardly when he was sacked by Will Smith in the second quarter of Sunday's game at New Orleans.

He was carted into the locker room and replaced by Moore, who threw a 43-yard pass to Keary Colbert in a drive that produced a field goal.

Carr, after receiving treatment and taking several pain pills, returned in the second half against the Saints. He threw a touchdown pass to Steve Smith in Carolina's come-from-behind win.

But Carr has been able to do little since. He said Wednesday he's been receiving around-the-clock treatment. He watched Thursday's practice while wearing shorts and a T-shirt.

Fox wouldn't say whether he expected Carr to practice Friday.

"I was hopeful he would today, but he did not,'' Fox said. "We'll see what happens.''

Testaverde went through his second practice with the Panthers on Thursday as he scrambles to learn the offense and get acclimated with Smith, Carolina's top receiver.

Testaverde, who turns 44 next month, was cut by New England in the preseason, Entering his 21st NFL season, Testaverde has impressed his new teammates with his arm strength and how quickly he's picked up the offense.

"He's got some familiarity with the system we've run and the coaches we have here," Fox said. "Hopefully he's a quick study. I think he is and he's shown that ability just in the last two days."

Moore, who played at Oregon State, was signed in September after being one of Dallas' final cuts before the regular season. It's uncertain how much confidence the coaching staff has in him to start.

The Panthers also lost Brett Basanez, projected to be the No. 3 QB, to a season-ending wrist injury in the preseason.

What a messed up whacked convoluted ridiculous damnable QB circus freakshow they've got going in Carolina. If we're frustrated, imagine how Smith feels.

I wholeheartedly stand by my original statement. If Carr can't go, it will be Moore. If Moore starts looking and acting like a scared kid who's in over his head, then (and ONLY THEN) will we Testaverde.

 But how hard would it be to learn CAR's offense? Short Pass to Smith. Long Pass to Smith. Reverse Run to Smith. Dump to RB X.

I wish that were the offense. More like:Dump off to RB. 2 yd.

Force ball into Colbert. Incomplete.

Stand in pocket, stand in pocket, sack.

The word around here is that Moore, while well liked by the staff, is very inconsistent in practice. All the signs point to a Vinny start if Carr can't go.

Carr's been with the team since camp and he hasn't figured out those parts of the playbook yet.

Yea, well Carr is very inconsistent at game time. There shouldn't be much of a difference.

Guess this question was answered today. At least for me it was. :kicksrock:

Might not have been pretty but he got the ball into Smith's hands.

I wouldn't get my hopes too high. There's a reason you don't see too many 40+year old quarterbacks in the NFL.
I'll take an old Testaverde over a young Carr any day of the week.
Ditto. The ride may not last long but at least now Smith is an elite fantasy WR again and that's going to help his owners immensely. Carr was destroying his value and making him untradeable in some leagues. After yesterday's game, Smith's stock has soared. So if you still want to trade Smith at least now you have some power to move him. The difference between Testaverde and Carr was incredible. I posted earlier in this thread that the best hope for Smith was that Vinny - unlike Carr - would realize he needed to get the ball to Smith and that's what happened. And even though Vinny's 100, he has a MUCH stronger downfield arm than Carr so now that integral part of Smith's game is back and that's another huge aspect of his elite status as a fantasy WR. I don't know how long the Vinny Run will last but I'll ride it as long as I can because the alternative is depressing as hell. Hopefully Carr's back acts up for another 10 games.

13 Years the Carolina Panthers have been in existence. The team has attempted 6,379 passes in regular-season games in that span. New quarterback Vinny Testaverde has attempted 6,529 passes since starting his NFL career in 1987.

Before everyone gets too crazy in here...too late I know...Smith had a huge catch on a busted coverage play...I'm not sure I am ready to say he is a top tier WR with Vinny chucking the ball. The AZ DB just let him go and gave up on the play, seriously.

The thing is MOP, Carr couldn't get the ball to Smith downfield. So that was gone and Smith's fantasy value was taking a huge hit because of it. Also, Vinny got the ball to Smith early and often. He had four receptions in the first quarter alone. It took Carr an entire game to get the ball to Smith that many times the week before - and that was in a MUCH better matchup.Vinny isn't great. He's old and he really shouldn't be starting in the NFL at this point. However, he gets it on the football field. His intelligence and pocket sense is light years beyond Carr's. That's going to help Smith and the Panthers' offense overall.

I don't think anyone here is saying Vinny is Tom Brady. I'm sure not. But he is Tom Brady compared to David Carr. Carr is an absolutely worthless NFL quarterback who was destroying Smith's fantasy value. At least now, Smith has value again.

The DB looked lost, I would assume it was busted coverage but two things that matter are that Vinnie saw him and got it to him.The Panthers wised up and made a concerted effort to get Smith the ball this week. Hopefully it will continue.

He had eight or nine catches before that bomb, which is what I love. Vinny was force-feeding him the ball, and when you do that, more often than not, Smitty busts one. As long as he is CAPABLE of putting the ball in Smith's hands, I'm happy. Add in the fact that Vinny is CAPABLE of throwing a ball downfield and I'm happier still.
