Steve Spagnuolo and Josh McDaniels (1 Viewer)

Spagnuolo was a hot prospect before the season, and this season is cementing his status as a top 3 defensive coordinator (I think he's the best) in the game. Truly legit head coaching prospect, his stock actually improved since winning the Super Bowl. Strahan is gone, and Osi is gone, and yet the Giants are still as disruptive as ever on D.

I believe that Josh McDaniels' stock has been helped more with Brady's injury than if Brady was healthy throwing 45 TDs. McDaniels has managed to turn a career backup QB (hasn't started since high school) into a legitimate threat by building schemes on his talents. The true measure of a person is his performance under adversity, and NE's offense has been solid even without Brady, Maroney, Morris, and Jordan.

The reports were that the Redskins offered the head coaching job to Spags, which means that his stock as measured by coaching contract dollars was at its peak in January. I don't think it's dropped since then, but I'll be curious to see what he does. It looked in January to me like the Giants essentially made him Coughlin's heir apparent, but his refusal of the Redskins job could certainly also have been his own conclusion that that wasn't a good fit for him.

There's a lot of talk in Philly about bringing Spags in to replace Reid. Some of it could be wishcasting, but it sounds like there is a faction in the front office that wants to make changes.

If you're going to do that, why not just promote Jim Johnson?

I'm sure they are going ot be hot candidates. I don't know if the relevant question though pertains to their stock level so much as it relates to their perception of their readiness. Spagnuolo from all accounts could have had the WAS job, and McDaniels made it known prior to coach hiring season that he was staying put. Both seemed to indicate that they felt their time had not yet come.

I'm sure both will be approached again this off-season and will likely be able to choose from at least 2-3 situations if they want. I think a good case study for both would be Gary Kubiak. I remember Kubiak being a vert hot HC candidate after the SB's Denver won in the late 90's, but he deflected HC opportunities away. He then became a non-candidate of sorts until Denver's offense started to click again. Maybe he was looking for that exact right opportunity and/or maybe he felt back in the late 90's that he simply wasn't ready. I'm sure he'd tell you he's glad he waited...that it all worked out. Did the extra 5-6 years as an assistant make him a better HC though?

More and more, I'm beginning to feel like the transition from AC/Coordinator to HC has little to do with your X's & O's prowess and more to do with how you handle team dynamic and organizational philosophy situations. Obviously, the closer you are to HC position, the more insight you can glean from how the head man is doing it (in this case Belichick/Coughlin). At what point do you say "Got it" and move on.

That is the deciding factor as to whether they'll move up, not via the perception of others.

I think Spags turned Washington down because he knows Big-Blue is all his when Coughlin's contract extension runs out.
