Oh my gosh, can this guy say anything remotely intelligent? Gruden and Kiper just laugh at him constantly. Boomer and Jackson just sit there with this look on their face like......are you done? Please ESPN, don't bring him back next year, he ruins the show. He is like Michael from the Office. He just makes you uncomfortable.

Can you guys give some examples? I'd venture to say that Young is the smartest guy on the set. Both in real IQ and Football IQ. What specifically are you talking about?

J

Young is terrible, no doubt.

But Jon Gruden never met a prospect he didn't like. It's absurd.
I found it humorous on Thurs night when the announcers took their turns bashing Big Ben for his alleged sexual assaults, and Gruden just sat there not knowing what to say. When you recruit rapists out of college/prison for the football teams you coach, I guess that would be a bit akward to speak to live on TV.

Too many to even remember. He rambled. He talked over the other guys. He repeated himself.

It was beyond embarrassing Joe. All you need to do is watch a random 10-minute segment. You'll see what folks are saying. At one point Young was rambling and Gruden literally rolled his eyes. It was fantastic.

I am a huge fan of the draft but ESPN ruined it for me. It was much more than just Young who sucked. I changed the channel and just followed it on NFL.com.

What is Young talking about? He starts off on a tangent then starts to drift off like he can't remember his point... then often just ends a thought in mid sentence. "Over to you, Boomer."

At one point, while Young was rambling, Jackson blurted, "What are you talking about?". Steve just would not let anyone else talk. He would end his thought, then when Jackson or Gruden would start adding their thoughts, he would cut them off and ramble.

I did not watch ESPN's coverage because of Young and Berman. Do not remember which year, but there was one where Young basically criticized any team that did not take an offensive player in the first round. ESPN is horrible.

You're not looking at it the right way. It adds a whole other level of drama to the draft.

The whole second and third round coverage tonight annoyed me from ESPN. They would spend 10 minutes talking to some random coach around the league, while 4 or 5 picks would just go by, without any mention at all. Anyone who is still watching in the 3rd round is there for the analysis on the actual picks, not the fluff pieces that the random 1st round watcher is into. Just annoyed the hell out of me.

Emmitt Smith, Steve Young, Michael Irvin. I hope one of you find this after searching your name on Google, Yahoo! or Bing. All three of you were great football players, but hearing you talk is painnnnnffuullllll. We all make mistakes. Michael Jordan played baseball. Just don't drag it out anymore. Sign autographs for a living.

I loved the interview between Michael Smith and Holmgren. First, Smith referred to him as coach and Holmgren immediately looked unhappy about it. Smith corrects himself and calls him Prez. Then he asks a question about how Holmgren will work with McCoy. Holmgren bit his lip and calmly explained he had a good coaching staff that would prepare Colt. Nice work by Smith trying to create some sort of GM-Coach drama in Cleveland. Thumbs down.

I'm pretty sure at one point early on tonight ESPN cut his mic. I saw his mouth moving and his hands going everywhere, but all you heard was Kiper. It would be awesome if they did that to him all day Saturday. Just let him sit there and talk and gesture, but not hear a single word he says.

Hope Colt McCoy is reading this.

Young is hard to put up with, but I still think the awards should go to Kiper and Deion Sanders for the noise makers with the least to say and offer. I really think there is no one more annoying then Deion, I am pretty sure I would rather have Jessica Simpson, the ladies from the View, you name it, over Deion. And I wonder how long Kiper's contract with ESPN is for, he has been passed by quite a few guys, yet he still holds this position with ESPN and they continue to act like he has value

Dude you hit this out of the park. Spot on analysis. Better than anything Emmitt has ever analyzed. Ever.

I think its kind of like the abusive boyfriend, ESPN just keeps getting abused by Kiper and Berman, but they don't know how to broadcast without them, so they stay with them just so they don't have to learn something new.

Wow, I couldn't disagree more on Kiper. Did you see last year when Tennessee drafted William Hayes? NOBODY had a freaking clue who the guy was. They had zero footage. Zero stats from college. Nada. Zip. Zilch. But guess who knew about him? That's right, Kiper. He was able to talk intelligently about Hayes.

Say what you want about the guy's personality - but Kiper ALWAYS has something to add to the discussion about a prospect.

Kiper definitely knows players. I don't always agree with his analysis, but he has the data for sure.

Steve Young...you want to like him, right? "Take this monkey off my back..." right? I think the dude is just a geek, and that's coming from a geek. So, he might be smart, but he's just not tactful or thoughtful with his comments on air.

Personally, I like Dion. Pretty fun to watch and very respectful of players.

Love Gruden. Missed him tonight as I had NFLN on.

That's true about Jon Gruden but I like the guy. I think it's the coach in him, trying to see the positive in every situation, it's just in a person's makeup. I would like someone to at least bring it to his attention. You can't love every guy. If you're passionate about Tim Tebow then so be it, but you can't like every single player. In general though, I like Jon Gruden. I like when he gets really animated, to me his enthusiasm is catchy and I like the way he discusses football. He has a passion for the game, I know I have a passion for this game so I appreciate it.

Yep, I want to like him and I do respect him and sometimes he has some quality insight but he just goes on and on sometimes. Maybe he isn't entirely to blame, maybe he needs a specfic role. I feel like when I'm watching ESPN's draft it's a free for all. There's no structure to it, people just talk when they want to talk, they cut each other off, they get mad about it, it's uncomfortable.Put Steve Young on one of the ends. Get him out of the middle and give him a role. Put Chris Berman (who says some really odd things to try and cover dead time, he's not doing a good job at it) in the middle as the QB and he hands off the assignments. If they're talking about a QB or a potential 49er, then turn it over to Young and let him talk about it. If Young has something to say about WR work ethic because he's played with Jerry Rice, then let him talk about it but give him some specifics on what they'd like from him because it looks to me from just watching it's like: Guys, we're going on the air in 30 seconds, here are some sheets of paper with some data on it, go talk about who's picked and they just go from there.

I don't know if he does or not Black. I mean if he knows his players shouldn't he have quality analysis on that player? If I know someone, couldn't I give you good information?Personally, I think Mel's Big Board was pretty bad this year.

It is so frustrating to sit there trying to watch the draft and as someone said earlier THEY ARE NOT COVERING THE PICKS !! I can listen to these guys analysis 24/7 but I want to see the picks announced. I kept switching ESPN to the NFL and both were guilty but ESPN was the worst, missing multiple picks. They might be discussing yesterday's picks or even at a commercial and missing the event that people are tuned in to see. I just don't understand, what are they thinking?

First of all Youngs timing is horrible, he never knows when to shut it off and keeps rambling and rambling. Then he always just starts talking over the other guys on the set.I really noticed last night Gruden, Kiper and Tom Jackson actually laughing and shaking their heads at Young. Jackson just sat there and clammed up whenever Young spoke with a look of disgust on his face.Too many guys on the set as well. I turned off ESPN and watched the NFL Network..it was a much cleaner and more enjoyable show to watch. Plus Berman gets annoying after a few minutes.

With only 5 minutes between picks I'd think it comes down to A) just showing the picks and giving a brief analysis about each one or B) showing some of the picks, giving brief analysis of some/most with more in depth analysis of a few picks, more discussion of the early round picks, talk to coaches/gm's of teams to get their thoughts. "geeks" want A) but probably more "regular joes" want B).

Since you watched NFLN you'll know what I'm talking about. You know who knows players? Corey Chavous. They were talking about the App St. qb/wr the Panthers took (Edwards) and Corey says something like "you want to know about this guy look at the Wofford game from 2008...." Maybe that's the only game he watched of Edwards but still impressive.

I haven't watched any of the ESPN draft coverage, but I do know that Steve Young has ALWAYS been horrible (talking over people, saying stupid stuff, etc.) ever since he got into broadcasting. I can't stand him, he's a moron (no matter how "smart" he is).

Young is simply brutal to watch up there. Like many others have said he is constantly talking over people, interrupting others when they talk, rambling on and on about something that has no point and overall just looking like an egotistical schmuck who can't let anyone else have a spotlight. I agree that Young is a very bright and intelligent guy. The problem is often times people who are as bright and intelligent as he is think they are the only person in the world who's view or opinion matters. That is exactly how he comes off on camera. I find it hard to believe he came off this way when he played or his teammates would have looked him in a locker for a week.

I think you hit the nail on the head. He looks at the prospect as if he was their coach and sees all the good things he can about him. But it's absurd. He went on and on about some prospect. Then he went on and on about the next prospect. Then Mount Cody was drafted, and Gruden talked about how amazing he was and said "If I ever get back into coaching, I'm calling Ozzie Newsome and trading my whole draft for Cody. He's that good." I turned to my buddy and said "if he thinks Cody's good, wait till he sees the next prospect!"At some point, the cup just ran way, way over.

:goodposting: I also got the impression that he put almost no work into preparing for this draft. Like he read a few mock drafts and that's about it. And honestly, if I was Steve Young, I wouldn't want to spend too much time in my off-season breaking down college players. I'd be drinking pina coladas on some tiny island. But then I shouldn't be on ESPN's NFL Draft coverage team.

Young has no idea what his point will ultimately be when he starts talking. The ending point, the conclusion, is not thought out or even known. You can see even he is surprised with his conslusions if he gets there. Oftentimes when he finishes there is no end point to his thought he simply trails away to some happy place only he knows. At one time he was passably articulate, but not anymore. He may be the posterchild for post-concussion syndrome. The damage is quite evident. It is sad.

:( Yesterday's bit with Andy Reid was gold. First, the bolo tie comment. Second, the stunned silence about his story playing for the JV and having to let the other QB play b/c that kid's dad drove to the game.As much as I like Gruden....McShay+Jaws+Wingo>>>>>>>Gruden+Young+Jackson+Berman. Makes today's draft on ESPN bearable.

Actually he said "I'm calling Ozzie Newsome and have him do my whole draft. He's that good." The Ravens moved around and got good value while filling a need with this selection. I don't think Gruden's wrong on this one.

I don't think it's post-concussion syndrome. I think he's just egotistical. All you gotta do is go back to when he was the backup in San Fran and he said that his job was to make everyone as miserable as possible until they gave him a chance to play. Backing up Joe F'n Montana! Then just look at the whole Super Bowl thing when he couldn't get enough of the spotlight. Get the monkey off my back, then holding the Lombardi Trophy in the locker room telling his teammates that he shares it with every one of them. Huh??

And I'm not so sure he was loved by his teammates.

Austin Miles. Not once, but twice.

Good point, and he did seem to add some value today. I think like some others mentioned though, this was helped a lot by Jaws and McShay (Wingo too, appreciate less of the WHOOOP's), but he did seem better today. The info. on the players I like the best are often the highlights. I love when they all have a man-crush on a CB, and then they play a highlight where a WR trips himself up and the CB intercepts a wide open pass. I saw one today with a DE who looked like he misread a play, and the RB adjusted the play and literally ran right into the DE and they both fell over. My thoughts here are more of a ha-ha funny, since I know plenty of good plays occur without the cameras on them, but still funny stuff.

And back to the original point re: Steve Young, it is rough when you can't find one good review of Young's performance. I am sure that some people might of thought he did pretty good, but I have yet to hear one

Ravens are draft wizards.
