Stones were pathetic (1 Viewer)

It just amazes me how much the NFL is out of touch. The whole Tim McGraw thing is just ridiculous, and the halftime show is always somebody reeeeeaaaaaaalllllllyyy tired. I just would like to see them put somebody new out there. My choice? Outkast. Now, THAT I would watch.
Outkast would be excellent, but I want to see Green Day and have them perform "Nice Guys Finish Last" - awesome song for the Super Bowl.

ahhhh. The new=good argument. I was waiting.NewsFlash. The Stones could be 80 years old wearing Depends and more people will know and care about them than will ever care about Outkast. Their mix was bad last night, but I've seen them live and they can still bring it and they bring it infront of sold out stadiums every night with all age groups represented.

How many of your new, "hip" artists will be able to say that in 40 years?
Newsflash: The Stones suck now, they sucked 20 years ago, and they will suck 20 years from now when they are still milking money out of people like you. They should have hung it up a while ago. Just because they have a large fan base that clings to the good ole days and refuses to believe that anything new can actually be good does not make them great. You, and a lot of other people like them and enjoyed their show. Good, I'm glad. My point is, is that the halftime show needs somebody that is recent. I can virtually guarantee that there are more people in this country that would enjoy a fresher view from the NFL than the Tim McGraw/Stones combo.
Outkast won't be milking money out of anybody in 20 years because nobody will give a crap about them. The Stones don't have to play another note. It's my choice if I want to pay my money to hear a top 5 of all time band play song after song after song after song that made a huge impression on the world. There current stuff is not my cup of tea, but it doesn't matter. They have already revolutionized the music business. They can go around and play "Paint It Black" forever. They've earned it.

Not only that, but I don't see why me spending my money on real musicians who can really play, playing great songs is somehow having my money "milked" out of me, but you wasting your money on disposable crap like Outkast is spending your money on something more worthy.

Once again, talk to me in 20 years when the members of Outkast are playing in VFW Halls.

I like the Stones' music, but it's a performance and they are well past the point of being able to perform well live. You may disagree, but a majority of Americans under 40 (the NFL's target demographic) would rather see a "hip" group like Outkast - who are actually very talented and have made some of the most creative music in the past 10 years.

Prove it. The Stones sell out large stadiums everywhere they go. What group or artist would you suggest that could outdraw the Stones?I think you're trying to argue from the perspective of the majority when you clearly are in the minority.

Once again, prove it. You certainly can't prove it by gate receipts or record sales.

RadioheadPearl Jam

Phish (of course, this would have to be a reunion show, but it will happen)

Three that came off the top of my head.

The problem is, the average ticket price for an event like the Super Bowl attracts an audience that would probably not be interested in a group like Outkast.

So, the Stones, who regularly sell out football stadiums like the Superdome can't outdraw Pearl Jam, who played here in New Orleans at the Lakefront Arena (a nice arena, but a small college basketball stadium?)I addressed Pearl Jam because they are the only one with a shot of outdrawing the Stones. The other two are fringe acts that have very loyal followings, but not mainstream ones.

The Who can still rock. I have a recent DVD of their Quadraphenia tour about five years ago and they are still in good shape (Daultry/Townshend) and can rock out still.

And the NFL wonders why kids are fans of the NBA. Having the Stones for halftime at the biggest event in football is a joke if the league wants to attract young fans. It doesn't matter if the Stones have millions of fans if those fans already watch the NFL and having them perform alienates their NFL's future fans.

Bands/People that can outdraw the stones

U2

McCartney

Green Day

ColdPlay

Oasis

MJ

Bruce Springsteen

that's off the top of my head

people like these also can constanly rock an event like the superbowl because of their established audienes as well

Mariah Carey

Chili Peppers

Outkast

Eminem

Jay-Z

Mick dancing makes me ashamed to be white. What a spaz. You can steal black music, but you can't fake the funk. Him and Bowie in the "Dancin' In The Streets" video way back when is confirmation that middle aged peckerwoods from England should avoid any dance oriented situations. :X

I'll give you U2- that's about it. There are very few bands that will "outdraw" the Stones.

First, you didn't get the direction of the conversation. The point was made that the majority of people want to see somebody new perform at halftime. My point was that's BS because there are very few artists/bands that have as large a following as the Stones, no matter how old they are. I say he is in the minority because there are far more Stones fans than non Stones fans. A group like Outkast, for example, don't have as large a following as the Stones. It's a fact. Look up gate receipts and record sales. The Stones still sell lots of both.Second, what do you mean by washed up? They certainly aren't a force anymore on the pop charts. Whether that's because their new material isn't up to snuff or whether they don't get any air time because they aren't a disposable under 25 music act, I don't know. I do know that as musicians and performers, the Stones have lost very little. They still play well, Mick still entertains and sings live. I saw them not too long ago and I can tell you, musically, they are still as good as they were 25 years ago as musicians and performers.

As artists and songwriters, they are certainly not where they were in the early 70's, but then again, nobody wanted to hear their new stuff at halftime of the Super Bowl, anyway. Everybody wanted to hear Satisfaction and Start Me Up. Those songs sounded as good as I've ever heard them, except some issues with the mix, which is not unusual for the Super Bowl, if you think about it.

Washed up is relative. Who are you and what band are you in better than the Rolling Stones?

U2 was the best in recent memory so along though lines the next two massive bands on the list are Oasis and Coldplay. I guess Green Day and Bruce in this country as well.

Coldplay is probably too mellow. Oasis is one of the top bands around when it comes to huge stadium gigs. "Live Forever" would have been a lot better than "Start Me Up" for the seventh thousand time and done poorly to boot.

The sound people did a horrid job. I'm sure that had something to do with the crap result. But those guys should be drawing social security, not trying to perform rock. It was pretty sad overall.

I say shorten the half-time to regulation. Either have marching bands or I like the George Carlin idea. Carlin may be old, but at least he isn't an over-the-hill rock act.

Heck, I would even take Eminem over the way old Stones.

As mentioned in several posts, there are plenty of other forms of "entertainment" besides musical acts. I'm sure they could come up with something different.

1. Many people consider the commercials to be the best part of the Super Bowl these days. Perhaps they could have live action on-field commercials.

2. George Carlin was mentioned. Why not comedy? Let David Letterman be in charge of the half time show.

3. Reality shows rule TV these days. Perhaps the fans in the stands could vote off several players from each team for the second half.

4. A circus is a traditional form of entertainment. Plus, based on many of the threads in the Shark Pool, I'm sure many fans would love to see the announcers and/or the referees launched out of a cannon.

5. Etc, etc.

Or maybe, we can have a half-time show to see who wins the NFL Big Man Dance. Have the viewers vote. Lead up to it with competitions for each division. Only losing teams get to compete.

Sorry to burst your bubble, and I love the Stones, but they sounded horrible at halftime. I mean HORRIBLE !!

You know on second thought, maybe the Stones weren't that bad.

For those of you suggesting Carlin, have you seen his act lately? I saw some of his recent show (probably HBO) and he was just not funny. It was bitter ultra-liberal whining (and I'm a liberal and thought it was bad). Maybe the rest of the show was better, but after the few minutes I saw I had to just change the channel. He's done. Carlin is at least as washed up as the Stones.

I've seen them within the past couple of years and they sounded great. So, either they wen't down hill really fast, or, as has been widely speculated, the sound crew did a bad job on Sunday.I'll give the Stones the benefit of the doubt.

actually I like those kick a FG for a $1 million type contests. have a few of them. Catch a punt for 100 grand, throw a ball thrity yards for fifty grand. Imagine some guy getting picked and shot putting the ball 20 yards.

 I don't get it--Oasis?? Seriously? Oasis may play huge stadiums in the UK but Stateside? I didn't think that had that many fans here 10 years ago, much less now.

Just heard on PTI that Sly and the Family Stone are being considered for next year's halftime. What, no other washed-up musicians available?

U2 is the only band on earth that can outdraw the Stones. There is no debating this fact at all, just look at the highest grossing concert tours and all you will see is U2 and the Stones.

Having said that, the Stones are living on legacy, but man does that ever pay well!!!!

Big Oasis fan here and I saw them at the Hollywood Bowl this year and had no problem getting good tickets. I agree that they're not that much of a draw right now. I also saw the Stones in November and it was a madhouse sellout at Anaheim Stadium.
