Storage Wars on A&E TV (1 Viewer)

There's also a knew show about people digging for stuff in their yards. Getting a little out of control.
Remember all those house-flipping shows? Those TV crews gotta work too, ya know. Just a new flavor of 'get rich quick' reality shows.
These are more along the Antiques Roadshow vein. Find some old item (in the attic, from a garage sale, inherited, etc.) take it to an expert, find out it's worth loads of cash.

This is the stupidest, most moronic idea for a tv show. And damned if I didn't get sucked in to watching 2+ hours of it this past weekend.

:goodposting: Love this and the pawn shop shows, and I find myself wondering WHY.I am watching Storage Wars tonight for the first time ever, and I have a question. Some of these lockers are selling for several thousand dollars. If the contents are so valuable, how come the owner doesn't pay the rent for three months? Do most of them not know their stuff will be forfeited under state law?

It would have taken you just as many words to answer my question. It's not like I answered 900 of your questions in the Sopranos thread.

I wouldn't say all of it, but they probably make more from being on the show then selling what they find.

The storage company locks you out of the locker as soon as your 1 day late, and won't remove the lock until you pay the amount owed.

I was referring to the bolded part above. I have no idea why people don't pay the rent which is why I did not answer you (nor has anyone else it seems). Earlier in the thread if memory serves some people had some speculations. First page of thread if you are interested. In terms of how the show is scripted, some feel that the bidding is rigged such that the stars only win certain lockers that get seeded. No one knows for sure though. Considering that most pros say you have to buy a ton of lockers before you get anywhere near these types of hits, they would have to be filming almost constantly if they did not seed some what.

Well, maybe. But I bet it's not all that unusual. You get people that die and the family doesn't know about the locker, or old people that just go senile and stop paying, or a company that goes out of business and the owner moves, people going to jail, etc.My bet is that most lockers with valuable stuff are from people that die.

I bet sometimes people also have no clue that they have valuables as they don't have the eye or knowledge for some of the older items to know that they hold value. It is also worth noting that the show presents a profit on about 70% of the lockers opened when in reality the pros say it takes closer to 25 lockers before you get one that can turn a profit.

The show has no choice since no one would watch if they showed them constantly opening up junk. They keep the reality part of this by claiming they simply edit out all the bad lockers.

Sorry for jumping down your throat... bad night.I would guess that these storage facilities have been sued on more than one occasion in order to recoup some of the valuable stuff that these people find. Even though they are in default of their rental agreement by the letter of the law, I wonder if they have any legal recourse.

According to posts in the first page of this thread, the storage facility only keeps the money they are owed. Any money made on the auction after that amount is supposedly sent to the original renter of the storage. That insight led some to speculate why not rent a place, fill it with boxes marked "fragile", "antique", etc and then stop paying. Don't know if any one actually tried it.

Oooh, great idea. Or use empty boxes of expensive equipment that can be easily googled. "There's $50K worth of equipment in here!!!".

That's the WOW factor.

I mentioned previously that my ex and her husband have been doing this for a while. They were even interviewed for potentially being part of the show at one point.

Here is how they see it now and some insider info that answers some of the questions brought up in this thread.

The storage shows have ruined the market. People think they can make money spending what they do on "Storage Wars", not realizing that it is in fact a tv show and isn't real. You should see what people are willing to pay for SUPER crap these days.

We were at a moving and storage auction a month or so ago... (Moving and storage would be crates up for sale because people have moved using a moving company - Bekins - and not paid the bill.) Someone spent $300.00 for a box.... and because it was stacked had to buy the whole stack - ended up costing the guy $1000 (3 times $300, plus 10%) for 3 boxes... unless there was gold bars in the box.. he was an idiot. But he was bidding against Jerad from the show.

The people on the show are given "buy" money... plus their salary - Dave Hester just signed for 3 million for the season... They can spend whatever they want... Little guys like us can't compete. So we follow the "big buyers" and buy there stuff at an auction house.
Apparently a LOT of the stuff the show guys get just gets sent on to an auction house.

Look a rusty hammer and nail set. That's a $250 bill right there. That's the wow factor I'm talking about.

not realizing that it is in fact a tv show and isn't real. But he was bidding against Jerad from the show. The people on the show are given "buy" money... They can spend whatever they want...
The first line seems to be contradicted with the other 2 lines.

So when these people go through their lockers, they take all the crap to the "experts" for them to appraise. "You got maybe a hundred bucks here" ... "This is maybe worth fifty bucks." And the counter on the screen goes CHA CHING. But they never actually show them SELLING anything. It's nice to have your items appraised. It's quite another to find a buyer.

Watching to see when Bubba keels over from a massive coronary

And Roy Williams isn't having much luck with his lockers, is he?

"A little professor calculator! I gotta see how much this is worth!"

:lmao:

I heard that Dave Hester is upset with A&E over money and not being invited to the network Christmas party (no joke).

I'm kind of hoping he goes rogue so that he can start doing interviews and expose how the show really works (e.g. auctions fixed, rare items planted, values inflated).

And Roy Williams isn't having much luck with his lockers, is he?"A little professor calculator! I gotta see how much this is worth!" :lmao:
:lmao:That was brutal. I remember having one of those. Dont know how anyone could have thought it was worth something...

I woke up at like 3 in the morning and caught the Roy Williams autograph show.... Was I half asleep, or did they estimate something like 5 Roy Williams autographed mini-Sooners helmets at 700 dollars?

Its April?

This is the stupidest, most moronic idea for a tv show. And damned if I didn't get sucked in to watching 2+ hours of it this past weekend.
I actually love the idea of the show, of people bidding against each other and having the reveal of findings. I do think the $ totalling of finds is humorous and severely exaggerated as to what they'll actually make selling knick knack items. Honestly, they can't come out with new shows fast enough for me (not new Texas versions though, those stink). What I really dislike is staged shows. I used to love Auction Hunters until I noticed the disclaimer at the beginning of the show (after watching a couple dozen episodes of course). That is moronic having an auction show that is totally staged from beginning to end. Why anyone would bother listening to their pre-auction evaluation of some made up locker, strategizing bid caps (where unsurprisingly they always get the locker at the limit they "set"... bravo!), the interaction with competing bidders (knowing it's acting), and the tense negotiation to sell items. I don't know how anyone can watch that show knowing it is staged... it's horrible. Actually a waste of somewhat entertaining and watchable characters.

I would stop watching if I knew a show was staged. I'm sure I've been fooled before and I'm ok with some parts being staged. But the whole thing?

I haven't seen a new one in awhile. Are they still doing new ones? Maybe my DVR is jacked up.

A&E just announced today they're ordering 26 more episodes of "Storage Wars", to start airing this summer."Storage Wars: Texas" and "Shipping Wars" were also picked up for another season and will also start airing in late summer.

Storage Wars: Texas is unwatchable. I think I might have one more season of the original left in me. I've probably seen all 50+ episodes. I think this show will go the way of Pawn Stars soon.

Watched for the first time last night while trying to fall asleep. I liked it pretty well (4 shows). So I've got it auto recording waiting to see brandi's mammaries in HD.

No bumps from the new shows last night?

I thought they might do something different this season but it's the same. Good lord Brandi's cans are amazing. I don't care if they are fake.
