I really liked it.
I thought the portrayal of Eric Wright was a bit flawed though as he was in fact more resposible for the breakup of NWA than Jerry Heller. Eazy got a huge head about being the front man, and like many other famous front men, he ended up digging himself his own grave because Dre and Cube were generational talent.
Eazy himself was unique in that his voice is among the most unique in hip hop, and really in music. It's like the difference between Robert Plant and everyone else. Eazy had an amazing voice and delivery but a lot of his success was due to Dre cutting it up in the studio. Live Easy was not that great, I saw them in 1989 and the only one that could rap well live was Cube, and Ren was pretty decent. Cube was a beast though, he was as good live as he was in studio. Anyway, Eazy depended on someone else to write the lyrics and someone else to make him look great. Bottom line though is that NWA never existed without him bankrolling it and his willingness to step up and become the lead.
Dre is a special music talent, probably the most talented producer and talent evaluator in hip hop or any other genre. Dre is Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, or whomever else you think is a great individual musical genius. He was also a tireless worker and someone who learned how to control his own fate in a very tough industry.
Cube is probably my single favorite musician ever. I loved all his albums and thought his music and lyrics were terrific. Not as successful as Dre but he's carved out a different path with his movie producing interests and his acting career. I think he has great talent and smarts.
Some obvious dramatization in the movie like the Detroit concert stuff which didn't happen like that at all, the departure of Dr Dre from Death Row was mischaracterized, and Eazy E never ran out of money. He had a whole lot of money. I also don't think they reconciled near the end of Eazy's life, but I wasn't there so I can't say for sure.
But the movie was pretty great, enjoyed the whole thing.
