Straight Outta Compton (1 Viewer)

1. Both Cube and Dre are on record saying that E couldn't rap, I've seen them in interviews years ago talking about it.

2. I have a video clip of Bone Thugs crying shortly after E's death saying that Suge killed E, I later remembered this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xVNRTaY4AM

3. E had a counter to Dre's f**k wit Dre Day that is on point but it didn't get much play locally.

4. The movie was going, a little slanted but good.

I say lay down and unbutton your bra

They were the biggest damn ####### this ##### Eva saw

Don't tell me EZ couldn't rap. That's one of the greatest lyrics ever

I should have been clearer, I was speaking post-NWA.

Ren and Cube wrote most of Eazy's lyrics. Dude couldn't rap but had the charisma, voice and that drug dealer money to support the group.

Finally got to watch this flick this weekend. Was a huge fan of NWA in HS and it brought back a bunch of memories. I liked getting some history/background on all the different members, but was surprised how much of the movie revolved around Eazy-E. Back when NWA first hit it big it was obvious that he had little talent (only a cool voice) and that NWA's success revolved around Cube and Dre - thought they should have concentrated more on their growth and less on the decline of E-Z. A few random thoughts:

They involved Snoop in the movie, what about Nate Dogg?

Considering how much he was around the group, it made me wonder why D.O.C. never rapped on an NWA song.

At the start of the movie it looked like Cube was being bused back/forth to a nicer school? Never figured out why.

Didn't know anything about Jerry Heller back then, but he was clearly a big part of the group. Sounds like he is suing over his portrayal in the movie: http://www.rollingstone.com/movies/news/n-w-a-manager-jerry-heller-sues-over-straight-outta-compton-film-20151030.

I believe he went to the same school as EZ. I didn't see the movie, maybe he started somewhere else and later went to William Taft?

Nice call. I thought I knew that whole album but honestly don't remember that song. I had the cassette tape so it was a pain to fast-forward to the end.

I suppose I could have just looked it up, but it does look like Cube went to a prep school:

In his early teens, Ice Cube developed an interest in hip hop music, and began writing raps in George Washington Preparatory High School's Los Angeles keyboarding class.[11] He attended the Phoenix Institute of Technology in the fall of 1987, and studied architectural drafting

I really liked it.

I thought the portrayal of Eric Wright was a bit flawed though as he was in fact more resposible for the breakup of NWA than Jerry Heller.  Eazy got a huge head about being the front man, and like many other famous front men, he ended up digging himself his own grave because Dre and Cube were generational talent.

Eazy himself was unique in that his voice is among the most unique in hip hop, and really in music.  It's like the difference between Robert Plant and everyone else. Eazy had an amazing voice and delivery but a lot of his success was due to Dre cutting it up in the studio.  Live Easy was not that great, I saw them in 1989 and the only one that could rap well live was Cube, and Ren was pretty decent.  Cube was a beast though, he was as good live as he was in studio.  Anyway, Eazy depended on someone else to write the lyrics and someone else to make him look great.  Bottom line though is that NWA never existed without him bankrolling it and his willingness to step up and become the lead.

Dre is a special music talent, probably the most talented producer and talent evaluator in hip hop or any other genre.  Dre is Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, or whomever else you think is a great individual musical genius.  He was also a tireless worker and someone who learned how to control his own fate in a very tough industry.

Cube is probably my single favorite musician ever.  I loved all his albums and thought his music and lyrics were terrific.  Not as successful as Dre but he's carved out a different path with his movie producing interests and his acting career.  I think he has great talent and smarts.

Some obvious dramatization in the movie like the Detroit concert stuff which didn't happen like that at all, the departure of Dr Dre from Death Row was mischaracterized, and Eazy E never ran out of money.  He had a whole lot of money.  I also don't think they reconciled near the end of Eazy's life, but I wasn't there so I can't say for sure.

But the movie was pretty great, enjoyed the whole thing.

Last week someone edited Suge Knight's Wikipedia page to say "killed EZ-E" under "associated acts."  gone now.

Finally saw this recently.   I liked the Warren G cameo w/ out even saying who it was. I could watch a 10 part series on that whole Death Row era.

From someone that worked w/ Easy at one point, he and Heller were into a bunch of Devil worship type stuff (pentagrams/rituals).  Not sure if it had anything to do with the breakup, but interesting.
