Straight up Drafting? (1 Viewer)

Has anyone ever drafted in a league using straight up drafting, just like the NFL?

The first thing you are saying to yourself, is wow, if i had the first pick in each round without snaking, i would gobble up all the top players.

Well it's a 45 man roster and the draft will be 40 rounds.

Our Dynasty league is entering it's sixth year, and when we started the league, we had player salary's already attached to each player, based off the salary cap number.

So for example if you had the first pick this season based off our roster limit and some major number crunching, LT would cost $37.00.

So if i was drafting first, that was $37.00 that gets subtracted from my total team salary cap.

Now with each player having a salary attached to him, if team one wants to load up on all the best players, which will cost the most, he will not be able to build his team with any depth at all and will be looking to fill his team out with $1 players.

So as it plays out, the team drafting 16th would still get could quality players in the mid-rounds, as the top teams would now have to start drafting for value that did not cost as much.

This is also a IDP league, where the IDPs are almost equal in value, so it made our draft very interesting.

We are now starting up a 32 team dynasty league, using the same format.

Anyways, has anybody ever played in a league with the straight up drafting format?

The top teams will still get the best values, and I don't know that you can set each player's value at the exact "right" price.

Overall, I don't like the concept, but kudos for originality.

ETA: how did the first draft work out?

See what we did back then, was use KFFLS player calculator and you set the salary cap ($200 at the time) and starting positions , roster limits, etc..... and their software spits out Auction Values, I then loaded the values into a spreadsheet and printed them out for the league members. Now when you drafted a player, he had the value according to what he would be worth in a $200 auction. So now i could have a draft where our dynasty league could still hold a draft, but not have the snake aspect involved. The draft went well, the team with the number 1 pick won his division, but lost to the 9th place team in the second round of the play-offs. The 9th place team went on to win the super bowl. None of the guys were sold on it, mostly because it was something that was new and had not been done before and they did not think it was fair. But i was thinking out-side of the box and wanted something as close to NFL as possible and that is the route we went. I was just posting to see if there are any leagues out there that have ever used the straight up system?

I like the thought process, love the originality. It probably would be interesting. Also, I like the fact that you're never more than 31 picks from your next pick (teams on the ends often get screwed there). Alright, you changed my mind. Might be fun. Still, to answer the question, I obviously haven't done this, except with rookie drafts (which is the norm)

I played in a redraft that did straight drafting like 5 or so years ago. No contracts involved. The team that won the league picked out of the 9th spot and guy at number 1 was a middle of the pack team. It was done just as a change-up from snake and everyone agreed to it.

I see the thought process of yoour particular league, but even with the contract dollars the talent advantage still goes to the guy in the first spot. Huge gap between the 33rd overall player and the 65th overall in the case of your 32 team league. I would consider this format if I already weren't over leagued.

Thanks for the reply, when i say 32 team league, we have them split into two seperate conferences of 16 teams, with seperate player lists. And yes the team picking 1st will have an advantage for the first three rounds or so, the prices of the top players eat their cap space up. 40 round draft, with IDPS that are equal value (Well almost equal vaule) We are also allowing all rookies into the first draft, which will help spread the talent around. Yes the teams drafting in the first few spots will have an advantage, and it is not as balanced as you would like, but i drafted from the 10 spot in our first 14 team league and won my division with a 12-4 record. With contract cap, cap hit penalty, player holdout, etc.... you can not just draft all the best players, as you will run out of money fast, and their will be no depth, and if you have been playing fantasy football for more than 5 years, you know you don't win without depth.Especially in a 40 man roster, idp league.I am getting some resistence from some of the new guys in the league, as they have never drafted under this format before.

We're starting something like that, but it's not a salary cap league. It's a 10-team, 5-player keeper league with a 20-man roster limit. We used to draft serpentine style, inverse of previous year's standings. This year we made 2 changes

1) Top 4 finishers draft in the 7-10 spot next year (Superbowl winner last, 4th place drafts 7th), guys finishing 5-10 go into a random lottery for the top 6 picks, so the guy that finished 5th has as good a shot at the #1 as the guy who finished 10th. This was done to avoid the urge to "tank it" when you're obviously out of the playoffs.

2) Switched to a straight, non-serpentine style pick order. If you have the 1.01, you have the 2.01, 3.01....20.01

I am the commissioner and allow anyone owner to bring up a proposal for a rules change, then all changes are voted on by the league. I personally voted "NO" on #2 for reasons described above, but majority rules in this league. Luckily for me, however, I draft out of the #2 spot this year.
