Any opinions on Chuck? I've watched the first two seasons and it's been pretty good in terms of fairly mindless comedy and hot girls fighting. I feel like the start of season 3 it's starting to fall off a cliff. Should I power through?

Has anyone watched the new Netflix Original series "River"?

I started episode 1 a little too late last night and dozed off, but it looked good from what I managed to see.

Wondering if it's worth going forward with.
OK - so I was able to finish this short six episode series.

It was good. Very different from anything I've seen before. I didn't LOVE it, but I liked it enough to recommend it.

I liked the short 6 episode storyline.

I liked the two main characters and their relationship; and without giving away anything about the story, it was unique.

The "who done it" surprised me even though it wasn't particularly the most dramatic part of the story.

ETA: I can see how some people could watch this and not like it at all.
i like Stellan Skaarsgard a lot. He's an underrated actor, imo, and I added this show to my queue about 2 weeks ago. I'm not sure when I will get to it but I suspect it will be after finishing "Jessica Jones". I'm glad this is recommended even if it isn't absolute.

I liked him a lot in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and thought he looked like a B Actor in The Avengers series.

I'm happy to report that he is exceptional in this Netflix series.

I'm a couple... maybe three... episodes into Master of None.

it's cute. nothing great so far- writing and filmwork is all pretty average, IMO. but there's definitely something about it that works- a mix of the humor, social zeitgeisty observation, and a touch of sentimentality in just the right balance. if pitched, seems like it's Girls, but not as funny/outrageous or well written. I think it could use a little more of that. but the acting is mostly better- even if I don't think it's tip-top. but there's enough there to keep watching- hopefully its a grower.
I don't know what comedies you watch on TV, but I find most of them are not as good as Master of None.
Probably true. Also doesnt counter or make me rethink anything I wrote.
went back for a couple more episodes... it's a grower.

I think it maybe suffers from the lead being too nice/likable- and I'm actually not a fan of ####### leads in comedy series. but would love to see more outrageousness from him. at the same time, it might be growing on me because the guy is likeable- honest maybe to a fault.
My wife and I watched the first episode and really wanted to like it but werent impressed. It's encouraging that the show grows on you, but with so much other great streaming content up now it's going to be tough to make time.

You aren't going to get an unbiased opinion from me, as Chuck is my favorite show of all-time (Wire and Breaking Bad are higher quality shows overall, but if I could only watch one show ever again, it'd absolutely be Chuck).

Yes, power through. Early Season 3 can be pretty rocky and annoying at times. About midway through Season 3, it turns around in a big way. For the most part, the back end of S3, S4, and S5 are the every bit as good as the best parts of S2 (though S5 does have some problems early on).

Though I can't make any promises. If you aren't in love with show by now and are considering bailing (after the awesome S2), then it might just not be the show for you (which I can understand. on paper, it's a terrible show).

Also, it might not matter......you're in Canada, right? Chuck just got taken off of Canadian Netflix.

Just saw there is a Broadchurch season 2. I thought it was a one and done. Liked the first season so I will definitely spin up S2E1.

Wife and I just watched Ep 1 of Season 2. Man, that is some riveting television. Just powerful stuff. I told her it's a 14 on a scale of 10 compared to some of the other dreck we've watched lately. For those of you who haven't watched Season 1 I can't recommend it highly enough.

Whoa! S2E1 is outstanding; best drama I recall seeing recently. Looking forward to the rest of this ride. Next stop though is to find a Season 1 episode guide. I struggled trying to recall a lot of the back stories from season 1.While I did not realize it while watching Jessica Jones, I now recognize that Kilgrave and Inspector Hardy are one and the same actor, David Tennant.

Did not see your reply before I started hamfisting my tablet. I thought season 1 was solidly A-, but season 2 might be a level higher if episode 1 is a reliable indicator.

I hadn't remembered some of the back stories either but had my memory jogged watching this episode. Also think some of the bits and pieces were new arcs, not continuation.

Top Boy? Watched Ep1 and thought it was decent. British show from 2011 (I think?) Weird, because it has the Netflix logo on the screencap.

Feels a little like The Wire at the beginning (or The Corner), from the criminals' perspective only.

I do really like the show, only complaints so far are the start of S3 being not quite as hot as the first two and getting a bit tired of the will they/won't they Chuck/Sarah storyline (or maybe the contrived ways they've maintained it more than the story itself),

I'm in Canada but use Unblockus, so as long as it's on Netflix somewhere in the world, I'm ok.

The will they/won't they annoyances reach their peak in the first 3rd of S3. There's a Chuck blogsite where fans rank all the Chuck episodes. 4 of the bottom 5 episodes from the entire series are from the first 9 episodes of S3. Just power through those and you'll be fine.

It's slow, but I still liked it.

Agree it was a unique show.

I found the "who done it" wrap up to be kind of lame, but it didn't take away too much from the overall series for me.

I still have that song stuck in my head. I love to love, but my baby just loves to dance...

I had to download that stupid song immediately after watching the last episode.

Bill Murray's Christmas Special has been released...will definitely queue it up this weekend. Wonder if it's safe for the kids...
Detail from Netflix states:

TV-MA

For Mature Audiences .. May not be suitable for Children under 17.
But nothing noting "why" the MA ..
oh well. Add it to the Bojack Horseman holiday special in the adults-only section then.

Highly recommend Soaked in Bleach about Courtney Love ordering Cobain's murder. Would love to read some opinions on that one.

Finally started watching S1 of House of Cards last night at 11pm.

Stayed awake until 4am watching the first five episodes. Up at 5:30 to go to work.
Today sucks, but I can't wait to get home and finish season 1. Or maybe take a sick day tomorrow to watch it all.

Someone please tell me (no don't tell me) - the train wreck of the Corey Stoll's character ends soon.

It's so painful to watch a character like that get eaten alive.

Oh yeah,,.....that was depressing. Poor fella.

Finished Season 2 of Broadchurch last night. I can't think of a better description than powerful. Just such a good show. Resolution to me was extremely satisfying. Acting was outstanding, particularly Miller and Mark in my opinion. Not sure if further seasons of Hardy and Miller are possible, but I'm sure hoping so.

I never watched Season 1 of Broadchurch but did watch the US version - Can I skip the UK version Season 1 & go right to Season 2 or should I watch the 1st one.

I didn't watch US Season 1, but my understanding it it's a line by line remake. Even so, I'd watch the UK Season 1 first, because some of the characters are so strong and so well played you'll want to have followed the entire story with them. I think it will make the emotions and payoffs of Season 2 mean much more.

"A Hard Day" is an entertaining Korean cop movie released last year. It starts with a basic Hitchcockian premise of fate throwing the main character into a predicament and then heads toward darker territory. It's beautifully shot and the script throws in enough twists, turns and black humor to distract the audience from thinking too much about how preposterous the set-up is.

Peep Show: Hilarious awkward comedy from the UK which is sort of like the original Office meets the Odd Couple (but not so different). #### cracks me up. Just as I was composing this, this part came on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09l0CGQ8WM0

Peep Show is a crappy name for it, but I guess it because of the 1st person camera thing they do. It's kind of unique and makes for some interesting cinematography moments.

Chasing Tyson is not bad. My kids watched it and couldn't believe Tyson bit Holyfield's ear. Also, reminded me of how ridiculous Don King was.

Will give "Making a Murderer" a shot. The wife likes true crime stuff so hopefully this is something we can watch together.

The Detectorists. A cheeky little comedy about a group of hobby metal detectorists in the UK. Pretty funny in a British sort of way. The lead male is the guy from the British Office.

The Day the 60s died

The story of May 1970, the month in which four students were shot dead at Kent State.

Making of a Murderer is fantastic... I am about 7 episodes in and have no idea what to believe. The only thing I do know is that some of the lawyers and law enforcement officers seemed to be completely incompetent.

Just watched a few episodes of "Making a Murderer". Found it fairly interesting for a documentary series. Really not what I expected but will keep watching it unless I get bored.

Agree, 3 episodes in and it is an amazing story that I never heard about before. I tend to like non-fiction more than fiction so it made it even more interesting to me.

That clip was horribly unfunny. And I love BBC stuff, so its not that I don't like british TV.

Didn't watch this clip but Peep Show is extremely funny, give it a shot.

To the guy not in love with Chuck yet...you're rapidly approaching some of the best episodes in the entire series.

If Chuck vs. The Beard, Chuck vs. The Other Guy, and Chuck vs. The Honeymooners don't make you fall in love with the show in the middle of season 3, its just not for you imo.

The Wrecking Crew was an outstanding music doc.
The Wrecking Crew was an outstanding music doc.
Excellent - reminded me a lot of the Muscle Shoals doc - loved them both.
Thanks for this...a doc on everything I've ever loved about music.

Rules.
Thanks for the feedback, appreciated.

Respect Yourself: The Story Of Stax Records (albeit not avail streaming at Netflix - in eight parts)

Blue Note: A Story Of Modern Jazz (also from YouTube, for those into jazz, arguably the greatest independent label)

* Standing In The Shadows Of Motown (about the virtually anonymous, on the down low and completely under the radar public profile but musically hugely influential Funk Brothers) also highly recommended, and to a lesser extent, Atlantic Records: The House That Ahmet Built.
