Streaming Video to my BluRay (1 Viewer)

I have a Sony BDP-5100 BluRay player that has WiFi. Part of the package/apps is that it can read files from the home network. I also have a Netgear WNDR3700 Wireless Router. One of the alleged features of this router is that it has a USB plug on it so that you can attach network storage such as an external hard drive, so that those files can be read/shared media for all devices that can access the network. Based on that, I attached my Western Digital My Passport 500GB external hard drive.

Now on the BluRay player, and on my PC (running Windows 8) I'm able to see the actual listing for this shared drive when it is attached. Under "This PC" it shows as "ReadyDLNA: WNDR3700." This only appears when there is actually a Hard Drive attached. This has subfolders automatically added to it like Pictures, Music, Video, etc. It is also then shown under Network --> ReadyShare --> USB Storage --> .ReadyDLNA (though this folder is dimmed as if it were hidden). The problem I'm having is that when the Hard Drive is attached, I can't actually move any files to it under that "ReadyDLNA: WNDR3700" folder in ThisPC. It is almost as if it is reading it like a CD-ROM. I can move files to it under the Network (hidden) section, but then those files aren't visible to the BluRay or under the ThisPC section. It's very confusing.

Am I doing something wrong here? I already reformatted the HDD in case there was something up with that, but nothing changed. It just strikes me as very odd that I can see the device from both the BluRay and PC, but can't add files to be read by the BluRay.
