Student awarded "Most likely to be a terrorist award." (1 Viewer)

So sounds like we all agree that this was idiotic.

I'm curious about appropriate discipline. I saw someone on the news - I think she was the head of a local Hispanic organization - who was demanding the teacher get fired. I kind of think that is a little harsh. That a sincere apology (which the district has given) and maybe a suspension or sensitivity training or something would suffice.

Having said that, if someone were to make a convincing argument that a teacher who uses such poor judgment in handing out this award shouldn't be teaching kids ... well I could probably be convinced by that reasoning.

Thoughts?
You kinda just did.

Watch, she probably did progressively more stupid things all year (longer?) And was never called on it.  So she'll use the "I thought this was okay here" argument.

Fire her ### says the teacher with 20+ years of experience.

If I were a parent at that school and the teacher was a good teacher, no way would I want the teacher fired. Hell, I wouldn't want the teacher fired if my kid was the terrorist award recipient.

But if this is a crap teacher, then it's another story.

That definitely should play a role here but it's also not always cut and dry whether someone is a good teacher or crap teacher.

What the teacher did was really stupid and they deserve ridicule and some type of "punishment" - having said that I hate that we've gotten to the point where we go to 11 (see what I did there?) with our need for justice.  People make mistakes, give them a chance to redeem themselves and don't take any opportunity to ruin somebody just because they did something stupid.  This is more a general thought and not just about this situation but I think it applies.

I agree with the sentiment here but planning out and making fun of a student in front of the entire class is highly questionable and also likely means this isn't the first time something like this has happened with the teacher.

From the reporting, there were a bunch of awards along these lines. Still horrible judgment, but it's not like this student was being singled out.

Good teachers don't belittle students.

Good teachers don't belittle students.
People do make jokes though, all the time. Now whether her intent was to belittle or make I joke, I can't say for certain. I doubt anyone in here can. But the whole "FIRE HER!" sentiment without knowing if she's a good teacher, how the students feel about her, etc just seems extremely myopic. But I realize in today's PC, "Ready fire aim!" society, this is pretty common.

I don't think that's categorically true. Depending on the context, I'm also unsure whether this joke award ceremony was intended to be belittling or that the students (other than perhaps the one who complained) actually felt belittled.

Yep.

It shows this wasn't just one error of judgement but I can see you perspective. I just think it we don't like the teachers behavior, it's only multiplied by doing it to more and more kids.
Yeah, I see that. But I just think that joking around with the whole class is less damaging than singling out a single student.

Everybody on this board has likely said and done far worse. Fire everybody.

:lmao:   Apparently this teacher wants to go out in a blaze of glory. If someone could get the whole list that would be awesome.

Best I can piece together from the limited news accounts, there were several teachers involved, and this required coordinated planning to conceive, print, and distribute these awards in front of the entire class/grade.  I'm surprised that not one teacher in the group considered that maybe this wasn't such a great idea.

I think it's the kind of joke that a teacher who had her finger on the pulse of the individual student and class as a whole would know whether it would be alright to make; about that specific student and in general, with the class. Some years and with some kids...it'd be alright, although in light of the recent Ariana Grande concert bombing and the nations apprehension towards terrorism in  general...it shouldn't have been an award.

Maybe in 1975 this would have been seen as funny but this entire thing is just awful behavior. There's no right class or right group of students to do with this. The kids are in middle school. I work with HS teachers that are sarcastic (much less serious than this) and I've had several students approach me about it. They don't know if the teacher is joking or not and they say it makes them uncomfortable and discourages them from participating in class because they don't want to get picked on.

To a bunch of kids? Really?
I just have to look around on the road every time i drive.

I bet you a scary percentage of people on this board have posted on this site while driving. That number goes through the roof if i add texting.

That is 1000 times worse judgment.

How about drunk driving? How about driving with bald tires?

How about parents that dont pay attention to their kids? How about parents that let their kids get fat?

Teacher did something stupid. If thats a pattern, get rid of her. If it was isolated, get over it.
