Super Size Me by Morgan Spurlock (1 Viewer)

Routilla

Footballguy
Has anyone seen this on the TMC? This guy, Morgan S, eats only McDonalds for a month and adds 25 lbs of fat to his frame. His doctor says he was ready for a heart attack, though he was in great shape at the beginning of the experiment. Since this was released, McD has removed the "Super size" option from its locations. Amazing. It took him over a year to get back to where he was weight wise.

Pretty sure this has been discussed at length in the past. Maybe you'll find some interesting discussion if you use the search function. The thing that disturbed me the most was watching the extra scenes on the DVD where they leave varies mun options in a jar for a period of time and after 2, 3 or 4 months (or whatever it was), the fries have not gone mouldy, rotten or old, whereas every other menu item and fries from another store are white with mould.

If fries don't age what are they doing in our systems?

This was the first I had ever heard of it. I did a search but nothing came up. I didn't realize there was a dvd already. Either way, I think I now understand why we are the fattest country on earth. Kids have been removed from recess/physical activity at school in exchange for the testing movement(no child left behind act), most family units have both parents working which increases the likelihood of eating fast food more often. The combination of eating this junk and not exercising adequately is a double edged sword. The youth of America has a long road to hoe. The crap that is served for lunch in the schools is icing on the cake, no pun intended.

First, the testing movement began before the Bush twins were born, so it's not a function of NCLB.

As for school lunches, you might be interested in this new technology that allows parents to monitor what their kids are buying in the school cafeterias.

My point is that recess/physical activity has been reduced at school in exchange for the testing agenda. Combining this fact with the extra calories being consumed by most kids and I can't help but wonder what the effects will be on the next generation of adults. Of course some of these kids have after school sports/activities etc. but there are a bunch that do not have that and they are the ones who will pay the ultimate price in the form of a shorter life span. Additionally, the health care industry which is already in a crunch will have a higher expense of caring for younger people. The trend will be earlier heart related problems at much younger ages. I think we are regressing here. The "new technology" was an intersting read, am forwarding it to some other parents. It seems like a very useful tool in the battle for healthier living for kids.

I saw it. I was mildly entertained although Spurlock's agenda was as evident as a boner in a pair of sweatpants.First of all, I have no doubt that what was documented actually happened. He gained a lot of weight, developed an enlarged liver and transaminitis (release of too many liver enzymes into the blood-indicative of liver injury). However, he implies that this is somehow related specifically to the ingestion of McD food. Spurlock developed fatty liver because he force fed himself too many calories over too short a time. For you foodies out there, this is how foie gras is made. If he had ingested large quantities of ANY calorie dense food over a short period of time, the same would have occurred. For instance, had he eaten at the finest French restaurants in Paris and ingested 5,000-7,000 calories of butter, cream, sugar, and meat heavy dishes, the same thing would have happened. That being said, I am not recommending eating a lot of McD. We all know that it's very high in sodium, fat, refined carbs, etc.

It's all perception. I heard there was also a woman who ate nothing but McDonald's for 30 days and lost like 15 pounds or something. She ordered the right stuff, grilled chicken, salads, etc.....

I garauntee you if I ate at Subway, and got the BMT with double meat, extra mayonnaise, oil and vinegar, I would make Jared look like a tool.

sheep......all of you........ :fishy:

????What do you think that most people order??? I don't know a lot of people that are rushing to McDonald's for the McSalads. Same thing with Subway- it's not that healthy on the white bread with the cheese, mayo, oil, double meat, etc.....

I personally do find the lack of general knowlege about nutrition and the havoc that the food we eat does to our bodies (or maybe that we just don't care, or are too lazy).

I was behind a group of chunky teenagers at the gas station and overhead one say that she got the 1lb bag of Skittles instead of chocolate b/c it didn't have the fat- so she won't put on the weight.... WTF?

Let me pull the pack of skittles out of my desk drawer here. 2.17 ounces ... 240 calories. So that one pound bag has 1,770 calories!!! Wow!Of course, looking at my kudos wrapper, one pound of that chocolate delight would be 2,080 calories.

Yikes! Dude, it was in the theaters last year and was all the rage. Nominated for an Oscar too. :nerd:

If I recall, he ordered everything on the menu at least once. And he didn't super-size it unless asked. Sure, he had an agenda, but he only ate the servings placed in front of him. He didn't order double value-meals or anything like the IIRC.

I thought the film was good. That said, his 30 days show stinks! Total agenda, it's always put the str8 guy in a gay community...put the city lovers with the "off the grid hippies" for 30 days. Of course it's gonna be hard for those people but it doesn't make people living on the grid wrong for doing so. I don't think he lives on that veggie lover farm either. Just idiotic.

Personally I only eat McDonalds maybe once or twice a month.

I WANT MY F'N Supersized coke and fries back!

Also here is an easier way to monitor your childrens food consumtion HERE

The thing that surprised me the most was the sugar--something like 35 pounds of sugar in 30 days--over a pound of sugar per day. My takeaway from watching that show was to stay away from the soft drinks and fries...oh yeah and the chicken nuggets... :X

We eat at McD's on occasion - of course our 2 year old loves the nuggets and fries. I used to order the fish thinking it was healthy. WRONG!!!Now I order one of the salads (usually) unless I'm in a fatty mood.

My whole family eats healthy most of the time, so McD's fat isn't going to kill us.

Moderation folks, almost anything in moderation is ok.

Saw the film last year. Haven't eaten fast food since. Don't miss it really. Didn't eat it that much anyway.

Saw the movie. Got sick watching it (throwing up sick :X ) Still eat fast food. His agenda was incredibly obvious, and he also gave up ALL exercise during the month as well. So he ate too much, didn't exercise, and gained weight - duh...pretty obvious.I think the lady that ate McD did it for 90 days and lost 20-30 pounds during that time. She limited herself to 1400-1500 calories per day, I believe. All these different diets and stuff are bunk - its all about eating less (not starving yourself though) and exercising more.Of course, I'm still carrying about 30-40 extra pounds due to not following the above advice :D

That movie didn't do much for me. I had already quit eating any sort of red meat at restaurants and avoiding fast food because of the book "Fast Food Nation." The reporting in that book is INCREDIBLE. If you really want to be scared away from fast food, read that book. It dissects the entire fast food industry, from the fries being grown and processed to the way workers are treated in the packing plants to the evils of franchise business to -- yes, the disgusting food. One thing I learned: There is actual s--t in every hamburger you eat at a fast food restaurant. Enjoy.

Were you paying attention at the beginning of the movie? The reason for the limited activity was because the AVERAGE American takes less than X number of steps a day (about 1000 or so?). So part of the deal was that he had to limit himself to that same standard. The lady that lost weight ate all the healthy crap, and probably exercised- not what the average McD's customer does. I think the more shocking thing that happened was what it was doing to him on the inside. A weight gain would be expected, but his liver turned to mush. Personally that is what made me pay attention. Yes is was extreme and excelerated, but the damage this crap does to us is shocking....

I don't see every movie that comes out. Perhaps we should have a "movie geek" thread so those that catch 'em all can educate the masses with their free time. :hey:

But that was the point. I'm not sure why people come away with this as a shot at McDonald's. It's a shot at our whole lifestyle. One of the most memorable parts of the film for me was the guy who drank the big ### 64 ounce drink every day and the amount of sugar in it. He just used McDonald's because it's the most prevalent symbol of the lifestyle.

Spurlock Speech Causes Stir at Pa. SchoolThe Associated PressSunday, March 26, 2006; 3:27 PMHORSHAM, Pa. -- The filmmaker who ate nothing but McDonald's meals for a month for his Oscar-nominated film "Super Size Me" gave a profanity-laced, politically incorrect speech at a suburban Philadelphia high school, but not everyone was lovin' it.Speaking at Hatboro-Horsham High School's first-ever health fair, Morgan Spurlock joked about the intelligence of McDonald's employees, about "######ed kids in the back wearing helmets" and teachers smoking pot in the balcony. The special education students in the back row were led by teachers out of the hourlong presentation."If you put the whole package together, the use of the F-word and poking fun at teachers and the comments about special-needs students, it just wasn't appropriate," Superintendent William Lessa said. Most of the 700 students laughed, gave him a standing ovation and mobbed him for autographs. A speech Spurlock was to make at the school later Friday night for community members was canceled.Spurlock said he's never had a complaint after giving similar talks at other high schools and colleges. He said he had been told shortly before his appearance not to talk about McDonald's because a board member of the Hatboro-Horsham Education Foundation, which sponsored the appearance, owns a franchise. The association's director did not return phone calls seeking comment."The greatest lesson those kids learned today was the importance of free speech," Spurlock said.

I used to stop by on the way to work and grab some breakfast each day. I was pretty addictied to the stuff.

Now I drink a meal replacement shake at home and enjoy some carrots and green tea as a mid morning snack. Not exactly living life on the edge, but with some excerise I've lost 15-20 lbs over the last two months.

Feeling good beats addiction to fast food any day.

green tea as a mid morning snack.
Green tea rawks as a mid-meal hunger suppression tool.
Seriously? I need to look into this. Also, by "mid-meal" I'm assuming you mean between meals and not "eat half my sandwich, have green tea, eat the other half of my sandwich", right?

Chad Johnson eats McD's for every meal during training camp. Calories in, calories out.

I commented back in mid 2005 (in this thread) that I stopped eating fast food. Haven't been in a fast food joint since and never plan to eat at one again.

McDonald's (and fast food in general) is disgusting.

It makes you feel so much better to simply buy a few fresh chicken breast tenderloins, carve 'em up and mix them with some spices and rice. Far less effort to pull up to a drive-thru..... I get it. But the quality of the food you prepare yourself is SO much healthier for you.

I applaud the sentiment but caution you against speaking in absolutes. If you make it to PAC-10 country you really should treat yourself to the best fast food experience in the world. But don't take my word for it just ask Troy Smith

Troy Smith, this year's Heisman Trophy winner, couldn't wait to get to his favorite restaurant: In-N-Out Burger.

"For the folks back in Ohio, they need to understand first and foremost, it is a fresh burger," Smith gushed in his Tuesday media session. "The lettuce and tomatoes are extremely fresh. And they toast the buns. That's huge. That's key."

This is true for almost any sort of food.Take the peanut butter in a jar sitting in your cupboard right now. Did you know theres a legal limit as to how much rat droppings can be in there?

That pretty much applies to any jarred/canned mass produced food.

Moderation down?

Interesting film. But I knew as soon as he puked up that first meal something fishy was going on. If you can't choke down a single super-size meal without it coming back up, your system isn't built to live in modern day America.

Reminds me of one of my favorite Ron White lines: "Your system's kickin back... broth? You're a manly man, aren't you?"

No different than when your body gets used to having any sort of substance regularly introduced into it. Alcohol, nicotine, sugar, caffiene...
