Supplemental draft question (1 Viewer)

What's the deal with the supplemental draft? Does a guy who misses the regular draft get to enter and does the supplemental draft follow the same draft order as the regular draft? If that is the case, why couldn't two guys collude with the team with the first pick (say Bush and Leinart) and one guy wait and enter the supplemental draft? The Texans could have both guys and just lose their 1st rounder next year which would be well worth it. This just seems too easy so I'm sure there's something in place to keep this from happening. Lemme know.

Shelling out $50+ mil in bonus money in the same year is a pretty big roadblock.
Yea, that would be quite a bit to shell out. However, they would not be paying a first round the following year. Thanks for the reply.

I think because one (or both) of those guys would have to take *less* money. If I am not mistaken, you have to fit all your rookies (from the regular and the supplemental draft) into your slotted "rookie pool" for that given draft year. So while it is theoretically possible that two players could do this, they would literally be costing themselves MILLIONS of dollars in signing bonus money.

we have a winner ladies and gentlmen!rules for the cap still apply, so the likelyhood of a team:

a)having the cash laying around

b)having the room under the total cap

c)having the room under the rookie cap

d)players willing to take LESS

is very slim...not impossible, just not a good idea---the team wouldn't be able to sign the rest of the rookies drafted, which would be akin to trading their entire draft class like Ditka did for Ricky

we know how well that worked out

I'll bet it is a lot more likely that:a) you'd find a team willing to trade their whole draft for both Bush and Leinart, than

b) both Bush and Leinart would be willing to take millions less than market-value just to fit in some team's rookie pool.

I agree--won't happen.

the other factor besides money is the the supplemental draft is not in the same order as the regular draft. the divide the teams into three groups and then draw the order in some form or fashion. Houston would be amoung the first group, but would not be guaranteed the have the first pick.

The only way I can see anything like this is if the 2nd player is a lesser value, but the team has drafted someone he works well with, like a QB/WR or two DTs. Not likely still, and not collusive, but a more likely scenerio.

Not so according to this article by Adam Schefter:Link

And teams don't have to worry about squeezing another player under the salary cap, into its 2005 rookie pool. The club that selects a player will be given an extra allocation of rookie pool money equal to the selection slot in the draft.

Folks, this is why you come to FBGs. I did not know that:1) the supplemental draft order was different from the regular draft order, or

2) you get extra rookie money if you make a selection in the supplemental draft.

Good info here.
