Is your league starting rosters over from scratch?
As for spending, you're going to want to plan to have a lot of money to spend on free agents in the 2nd and 3rd years of the auction format because there are always a few owners who overpay for players the first year. Once they realize that, they'll have to release or trade them, otherwise they'll be very limited on how much they can spend to aquire other players to add skill and depth to their teams.
The one exception will probably be at the QB position. Top QBs that are overpaid probably wont be released. Owners usually stick with the high price tag if they can't work out a trade. With that in mind, I would target a QB in the second tier for a more reasonable price, then look for those future stars who can be had cheap. For example, with a 50mill cap I spent 8mil on Romo and only 1mil on Rodgers before he became the starter. Later on I was able to trade Romo away for a top 10 WR while clearing up a few mil in cap space all in one transaction.
Also, don't be cheap on the TE position. Get yourself a top 10 guy who has at least 3 or 4 good years ahead of him. Its a hard position to be strong at if you start off thin. Took 3 years for my developing TEs to become good enough to replace my original picks at the position.
Do a search for auction. Lots of good advice. You'll never go back. Welcome!
If it's everyone's first time in an auction format, be very aggressive early. Most people are too hesitant at first. You'll see first timers hold back on an Adrian Peterson and later a Frank Gore goes for nearly the same amount. Do not bid up unless you're prepared to get stuck with a player.
I typically spend around $80-$100 on RB's, $60 on WR's and $25 to $30 on a QB ($200 cap of course)
This year someone like Romo shouldn't cost more than $20, I usually like to target QB's in the 5-10 range. Otherwise, someone like Vick or Rodgers could get in a bidding war and go for upwards of $40.
For WR's, I like to get a surefire #1 and then go with 4 or 5 middle of the road guys. For instance, last year I drafted Garcon, Bowe and Dez in the $15 range. This worked out in my favor.
Spending is a matter of opinion. I like to blow my load on a few elite players early then sit on my hands until the very end end and fill my roster with scrubs/fliers. I usually have one of the best teams. Another owner likes to sit and wait. And wait. And wait. His roster looks like crap while everyone else is filling their rosters. Then by the end of the draft he's sucked up a ton of value players and his team is terrifying. He beat me last year for the championship.
first time auction last year...and it was incredible...all the hype about auctions is true.
I couldn't land any of the first 15 or so players...I was getting nervous. Owners were snatching up the big names for a lot of money....then it happened...everyone went broke and I had a load of money left. I along with another owner snatched up a bunch of very good players and ended up with two of the best teams.
Point being is don't get caught up in the bidding frenzy...you will get your players eventually. Some aggresiveness mixed with patience seems to work.
I'm switching my league to an auction format this year as well. Can't wait. I have had a blast doing the mock auctions, even though there are usually a couple knuckleheads who try to ruin it by bidding $80 to $100 on someone and then leaving the draft.
I have an idea in my mind where I can get value and the players I want, but my league mates have never done an auction format, and they are somewhat petrified by the idea. So I am fearful that they will be way too reserved on draft day and not want to spend money on anyone, leaving me some tough choices on whether to take some of the higher-priced players I really don't want -- but don't want to let them go to someone else for $40 or something!
I said it once but I'll say it again. It is VERY common for auction newcomers to let the first player or two nominated go for less than they should. That's not to say the players will be cheap. But they are usually sold for less than they should and you'll see lesser players go for the same price.
I highly recommend being aggressive on the first player or two while others are getting their feet wet and figuring things out.
