Tablet for Kids (1 Viewer)

So my 7 y.o. son has been saving his money for a tablet. He has about $120 to spend. I've been trying to convince him to save a little more so he can at least get a Samsung tablet, which seem to be anywhere from $150 and up. He wants it now.

So, as we are doing our research, we find this HP tablet for $99. Basically all he wants to do is play Clash of Clans on this thing, and it looks like that will handle that no problem. He would just hook into the wifi at the house.

So my question: is this a decent enough tablet for a 7 y.o.? He will be limited to how much time per day he's on the thing, so it won't get heavy use. I understand the old "you get what you pay for", which is why I'm trying to get him to save his money for something better. I will not give him the extra money to go to the Samsung. This is something he's worked hard and saved for, and we've always told the kids if you save your money you can buy what you want (within reason of course).

Any thoughts? Thanks all.

As a dad I would give him the extra $30 to get the better tablet you want and think he'll get the most of. Its a smart fiduciary move , your $30 will get the most out of his $120.

Yeah, I've thought of this. But I also have 2 other kids watching this transaction closely. I shell out $30 for this, and all of a sudden I have two other hands out for their $30.

I bought both my daughters (10 and 5) 7 inch samsung tab 4s for Christmas. They are the Barnes and Noble Nook version and they were on sale for $129. Pretty good value for decent tablets. They seem to go on sale from time to time. They are Nooks but also have the full Google Playstore on them so you don't have to be tied to the B&N appstore.

Get the 2013 Nexus 7 from Groupon.... $140 I believe for a new from the factory device with a factory warranty.

ETA: the HP tab in the OP looks like junk to me.

We bought our 11 and 6 yr olds (at the time) the nook for Christmas last year and they are still going strong. I would pay up a bit for a tablet for a child.

Tablets are limited. You need the 4g for the car if you don't have a hot spot. I used an upgrade to get my son iPhone 6plus for clash of clans and its great. Almost as big as a tablet. He never carries it, we just give it to him at soccer tournaments, home, or driving. Its like having a baby sitter and he never takes MY phone anymore. His Lil sis also uses it. He's nine BTW. Good luck.

Bought my 7 year old a kindle fire kids. Comes with a year of apps/games/movies and amazon will replace it within 2 years if the break it. You can also set up parental controls to limit how much time or when they use it

I paid for half of the Samsung tablet my son (12yo) was saving for... Money very well spent as he uses this for homework research and keeping himself entertained when we are on the road for his hockey!

I found a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 at Best Buy for 139.99. Looks like this may be the ticket. He'll owe me about $30 worth of labor this weekend, but probably worth the extra dough.
Tell him to start saving for the micro SD card now!

I see mixed reviews for some of these cheap tablets on Amazon. (off brands such as Dragon Touch, Chromo, Astro, etc.) Does anyone have any experience with these? I'm not looking to run an enterprise server off of them, but if my kid could use the tablet to watch movies on a long car ride, I'd rather pay $60 than $140.

The Nexus 7 2013 is a great device, and for $140 probably the best value out there for 7 yr olds and 37 yr olds.
