Tackle Opportunities (1 Viewer)

I believe FBG defines Tackle Opps as (Run + Completed Pass + Sack), but using a simplified formula of Run + Pass Completed you can put the Week 1 numbers into context pretty quickly. This helps temper expectations on some of the early standout performances and maybe gives more patience to highly-rated guys who had pedestrian numbers.

I didn't do a full-scale analysis but here are some back of the envelope calculations for guys I had a personal interest in watching and in case Jene doesn't cover this in his RTD or it comes out too late for your respective WW deadline.

My understanding is that a "normal" game has somewhere around 42-48 TO's.

Guys I ran some quick numbers on:

TJ Ward (7/1) - Take with grain of salt since TO's off PHI OFF was high at 59 (29 pass/30 rush)

S.Nicholas (10/2) and W. Moore (7/0) - Also fairly high as KC OFF had 54 (21/33)

P. Lenon (8/1) - Above average as SEA OFF had 51 TO's (18/33)

W. Woodyard (12/0) - PIT OFF had TO's in the normal range of 48 (22/26) which makes Woodyards numbers look even more impressive

L. Kuechly (2/2) - TB OFF had above average TO's of 52 (16/30) so this guy's performance was extra disappointing

Some guys that didn't do as bad as there numbers suggest include:

M.Kendricks (4/1) and D. Ryans (5/0) - CLE OFF only had 34 TO's (12/22)

KJ Wright (5/4) - AZ OFF gave up 40 TO's (20/20)

Like I said, I'm sure FBG will cover much of this but for people who have questions about WW pickups the Tackle Oppty calculation is worth a look to put Week 1 performances into context. I don't think there is a source for TO's, so I just used the ESPN box scores.

Larry Thomas will have all this and lots more in his matchup sheet today or tomorrow.

Average tackle opportunity since 2002 has been between 49 and 50 per week.

Good post, thanks. Only thing I'll add is that for Kuechly's case and perhaps some others, the guy may not have been on the field for every defensive snap. In Kuechly's case, I think Jene or someone mentioned that Kuechly was on the sideline for 20 defensive snaps or so, which implies he undoubtedly missed out on a good chunk of those 52 tackle opportunities.
