Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans can get drunk quicker now that the Tampa City Council gave preliminary approval to the sale of hard liquor throughout Raymond James Stadium.
According to Janet Zink of the St. Petersburg Times, the City Council's action will allow all 65,000 fans in the stadium each Sunday (or at least the ones who are over 21) to buy hard liquor. In the past, liquor sales have been limited to club seats and suites.
"This will allow all the fans in the facility to purchase liquor," said Mickey Farrell, director of operations for the Tampa Sports Authority, which manages the stadium.
It's hard to know what to think of this. On the one hand, alcohol is legal, and there's no reason that adults shouldn't be allowed to consume it while they enjoy a game. On the other hand, more hard liquor could lead to more drunk fans in the stands during the game and on the highways after the game. You can bet we'll hear more about this if a drunk fan gets into an accident driving home from a Bucs game.
No word if this is a reflection on the outlook for Tampa for this season.July 19, 2007
Liquor to flow at Raymond James Stadium
TAMPA -- Football fans will soon be able to choose a cocktail instead of just beer or wine while watching the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from their seats at Raymond James Stadium.
The Tampa City Council today gave preliminary approval to the sale of hard liquor throughout the facility, which holds more than 65,000 people. Liquor sales are allowed now only in the stadium's club seats and suites, which hold about 15,000 people.
"This will allow all the fans in the facility to purchase liquor," said Mickey Farrell, director of operations for the Tampa Sports Authority, which manages the stadium.
Final approval is expected in two weeks, and the change is expected to be in place for regular season games this year. The first regular season home game is Sept. 16 against New Orleans.
