May as well fire this up and lay the 2010 thread to rest. 'Twas a good season, but hopefully they can take it two steps further this year.

This front office never ceases to amaze me. I'd expect another move or two to solidify the bullpen, and this team will once again challenge for the AL East crown.

Speaking of Freidman, how long is he under contract? I don't recall many instances of big market teams throwing large contracts at Front Office people to lure them away from small market teams...does that happen?

I don't think they release the terms of his contract. But Sternberg "discovered" him so I imagine he's highly loyal.

I seem to recall Boston offering huge money and total control to Billy Beane but he turned them down because he wanted to stay on the West Coast--I think he was going through a divorce and wanted to be close to his daughter.

MLB Network aired a special with Joe Maddon.

Impressive guy. Very smart, personable, great sense of humor.

He didn't complain for one second about the financial constraints of Tampa. He wasn't angry at all about the fact that he will never get to keep his best players for the duration of their career.

He came off really well in the interview.

So what are the roles looking like in the pen?

Is Farnsworth the closer? Howell? Sonny in long relief? Any of the new guys like Torres making an impact?

This is true. Oakland gave him a percent of the team as a way of closing the financial gap.

Farnsworth has a clause in his contract to pay him more with X games finished. He has the language for it, but Jake McGee also has the stuffSonny is all but assured mop up work and spot starting.....Archer is the guy most likely to have an impact off the farm at some point this season.

No Chi-Chi? Ouch. I'm guessing we're facing a righty. Any chance we see Zobrist at 1B and Rodriguez at 2B sometime soon? Or does he platoon between RF and 2B all year, depending upon the opposing pitcher?

Chi-Chi has a grande hole in his swing vs RHP. I don't think you'll see a lot of Zobrist and Rodriguez on the right side of the infield at the same time vs LHP. Someone has to play RF for tough lefties until Joyce hits them more effectively and the only reserve OF is Fuld, who is also a lefty.

Manny should be pretty good as the full time DH. The guy had no business being in the field the last few years.

Obviously a horrendous start, but way too early to panic. The SP looks like it should be solid again, and Zobrist has been hitting the ball hard.

We'll see. They might have to win a lot of 3-2 games this year.

I figured this season would be a stronger offensive contribution with a weaker bullpen. Now I think both will be bad with the same continued batting issues as last season.

ETA: I know it's way too early to panic.

Which is weird, because they brought his family together.

MOP - Zobrist would start for most teams if not all. Obviously Longoria would start for all. Brignac is basically a rookie. Johnson, I will say, is not so hot.

Well hey......the Sox are 0-4 too.

I don't know what the he!! he's talking about. Is he concerned about losing Pena? Bartlett and his huge 2010?

Is Maddon still a genius?
meh its fun to pick on the Sox but the Rays slashed payroll dramatically. Its a shame. The game needs some fixing and this team needs to be moved somewhere that people fill the stands or at the very least get rid of the crappy dome.

The last 3 years...you could tell what kind of season we were going to have by late April. We'll see if the same can be said this year.

Would make it that much sweeter to win the division this way.

Dan Johnson in mid-season form already. I guess I was naive in thinking Manny and Damon would bring a spark to their offense, but so far it does not seem to be the case. All the bullpen concerns seem to be gone. Hopefully Longo can do something when he gets back in a couple of weeks.
