Tampa Bay Rays 2011 thread (1 Viewer)

Damn, Farnsworth just goes right at these guys. Every time I see him pitch it seems he gets thru the inning in less than 10 pitches!

Wow! Saw the Granderson 3 run shot and thought the game was ovah. Glad to see the Rays score more than 5 at the Trop.

Anything to see here with Elliot Johnson in dynasty leagues? He's got the same number of HR's (2) as Hanley, Jeter, Rollins & Andrus with only 1/3 the number of AB's?

Apparently Maddon is ready to give him more playing time at the expense of Brignac. Link

ST. PETERSBURG — The specifics of the time sharing remain to be worked out, but Elliot Johnson is going to be playing more at shortstop and struggling Reid Brignac less.

Manager Joe Maddon said there wouldn't be a straight platoon (Brignac swings lefty, Johnson is a switch-hitter) nor a set pattern.

"I don't want to be committed to that. You're going to see more of Elliot. Let's put it that way," Maddon said. "I think he's done a nice job."

Brignac has struggled since inheriting the starting job following the trade of Jason Bartlett, hitting .179 with one extra-base hit and a .212 on-base percentage. Johnson, after going 1-for-3 Tuesday with his second homer, is batting .260 overall, including .353 over his past five starts.

"I wanted to just give them both an opportunity a little bit," Maddon said. "You're going to see them both bounce back and forth a little bit right now."

Johnson, 27, said he welcomes the chance to play more. "If I get the opportunity to do that, great," he said. "And hopefully I can just continue to help this team win."

I'd guess Guyer or Ruggiano get called up, but I'm really hoping it's Desmond.

Somebody had calculated his service clock and figured he could be called up today, but others have it pegged as early-July.

The reality is probably only Friedman knows.

After checking on Desmond Jennings' stats in the minors, I just picked him up. The Rays should give up on the Sam Fuld experiment and let the Desmond Jennings era begin.

Pretty tough stretch.

What does Sam Fuld have to do to get benched? Hit under .100?

OT Tampa question - I have tickets to the Gold Cup at Raymond James Stadium (USMNT vs Panama). I need to get a room anyway, if I book at the Holiday Inn Express near the Stadium is that walk relatively safe enough that I could leave my car at the hotel and hoof it back and forth? Worried more about the walk back after the match.

There is so much going on right there...you should be fine. The lights will be on at the stadium....they also should be on across the street at Steinbrenner Field.I wouldn't stray off Dale Mabry.

Yeah you should be fine right there. I stay there for any games at Raymond James that I go to and it's a short walk right on the main road. Have a great time!

Joyce!Crushed that pitch tonight....off a lefty.
Yet Maddon keeps batting him 7th. The best batting average in MLB should be getting more AB's for the Rays.
Joyce bats 7th v. lefties, which is a good spot for him considering his splits. Looks like he bats cleanup v. righties.
He has done better the last few games vs. lefties, so hopefully the splits will improve and Maddon will move him up.The only reason he was batting cleanup lately was because Maddon moved Longo to lead off to try to knock him out of his slump (which seems to have worked.) He more often than not is 5th behind Longo, although moving them both up a spot to 3rd & 4th would be what I would do. Your best hitters should be getting more at bats. What we need is a real lead off hitter (Jennings when his time comes). Fuld was filling that role before he entered the deep freeze. If he heats back up we could put him back there.

is there a reason hes not up yet?
You mean besides $$$$?
He has been in a bit of a slump recently, so that gives the Rays more reason not to call him up until July.
I posted a new article today on the best minor league prospects and which we could expect to see earlier (Lawrie) than others. IIRC Jennings was in the middle of the list and one of the reasons aside from "Super Sam" is that the Rays are clearly in contention this year with the players they have up now. Even when Jennings is raking I am not sure they want to disrupt their current lineup by adding someone new.....AND they have always said they don't want to bring him up if he is not going to play everyday, so absent a real need they might use Guyer for a short term rather than call up Jennings and not be able to put him in the lineup every day.

Glad to see all the prospects are mashing in AAA while we continue to get lots of at-bats for Fuld, Brignac and Shoppach!!

So is Shields likely the only All Star?

Joyce nowhere on the map. Longo hasn't played enough. Zobrist down the list. Kotchmann...never mind.
