Tampa Bay Rays 2011 thread (2 Viewers)

It occurred to me for a second that Girardi might tank the final series against T.B. to keep Boston out. Excuse me... not "tank" but rather "get the rotation set for the playoffs".... wink, wink. But then I realized that New York would almost certainly rather have Boston in the playoffs over Tampa Bay at this point in time.
I agree with the latter.I'm trying not to pay attention....I feel like a baseball player worried about some stupid jinx.

Timmy K just said on SC that this would be the 'greatest comeback in baseball history, and the greatest collapse in baseball history.'
More than '78??? GTFO!
In 1978, the Red Sox and the Yankees were involved in a tight pennant race. The Yankees were 14 1⁄2 games behind the Red Sox in July, and on September 10, after completing a 4-game sweep of the Red Sox (known as "The Boston Massacre"), the Yankees tied for the divisional lead.

And the Year of the Blue Snow - blowing a 6.5 game lead with 12 to play.http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1068846/index.htm

He specifically mentioned that no team had ever come from 9 back in September to make the postseason.

Have to win today to have a realistic shot. 4 back with 10 to play is asking for too much.

Plus, it's Price vs. Wake. Gets no better than that on paper.

6-4 O's in the 7th.

They need to hang on here because Matusz is starting game 2. He is absolutely AWFUL.
:towelwave: No worse than a split anyway from here....

It is an embarrassment to all of baseball and undermines the integrity of the game that the Orioles keep trotting this piece of S##T out to the mound. It's a total joke. There is an excellent chance he is the worst pitcher I've EVER seen. No shtick. There has to be a kid in f##king ROOKIE BALL who would give them a better chance.

I just can't let this go. Matusz walks to the mound in the bottom of the 1st with a 3-0 lead.

He proceeds to give up 6 runs in 1.2 innings, and his season ERA basically didn't move at all!!! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

He is truly on the ELITE level of terrible.

Wow. ERA over 10. Holy crap he sucks.

4th overall pick in the draft. At least the O's won't be a threat anytime soon.

Sucks to see them come this far, then score 2 runs in 18 innings.

CC is going to kill them tonight as well. :kicksrock:

How devastating was that loss today? A hodgepodge of Yankee pitchers vs Big Game James and he gives up a HR to Nunez in the 8th. Horrible. Im rooting for the Rays to make the playoffs cuz I hate the Sox.

It'll suck if they don't make it, but this comeback has been so great I won't even be upset. 2011 was supposed to be a "down" year anyways (I figured 85 wins) so this has all been gravy. 2012 was supposed to be their next big year.

Speaking of choke job...
I know you don't know much about baseball, but it's not a choke when you get beat by a better team. The Yanks are clearly better than the Rays.
What if your ace, 'Cy Young candidate', gets beaten by a player throwing his first major league start?Rays are folding in the face of adversity. I know you are already readying your response of how the Sox are as well - of course they are, and to a worse team. But it doesn't change it

:lmao: The Rays aren't folding. This is who they are. A team with great SP, a mediocre bullpen and a very mediocre offense. They just happen to be playing one of the teams clearly superior to them at the wrong time. This is nothing at all like the Red Sox choking on the gag ball. Stop being stupid.

I happen to think they are a pretty good team that is folding. You want to call them a middle of the road team that is playing at its talent level, we will have to agree to disagree

I never said they as a team are middle of the road. Their bullpen and offense are middle of the road, and that's what has let them down in this series against the Yankees.

Shields and Hellickson dealt today. But you're not going to beat the Yankees scoring 4 combined runs in 27 innings. Their offense has been average all year and it manifested itself this week.

This team is one Fielder away from winning the AL East in 2012. And I don't mean defense, I mean Cecil's son.

they need an average catcher too imo

He's going to the Nationals, book it.

Not a sure thing at all but I could see Washington go after Pujols 1st, then Fielder. I haven't read anything that leads me to believe Pujols staying in St. Louis is a given. If not Washington would be very interested I'd imagine. Who better to lead the younger guys on that team? Great mentor for Bryce Harper.

Yea Fielder ain't coming here. Shame too, because he would be a perfect fit.
Agreed, it's a pipe dream. They won't spend the money. If they would they'd be instant contenders with that pitching staff. They need to blow up the Trop and build next door to Lightning's arena downtown.

Wow. Matt Moore has best pitcher in baseball stuff.
Didnt see him last night, but 5-2-0-2-11 at Yankee Stadium is a helluva debut. Something special. Saw the 3 inns he pitched against the Sox and he has a 2nd fastball which appears will be murder on righties cuz its 97-8 mph and has a very weird angle on it, like he was a 6'10" 3/4-angle guy or something going straight to the catcher's left toe. If it was 94-5 mph, my guess is they'd eventually figure it out - dont know if they can at that speed. At least he's on a team that wont baby him like the Nats do their phenoms. Davis wont be missed - doesnt K enough for pen conversion.

:goodposting: Sox bought themselves the opportunity to slump, Rays did not. Sox are not likely to turn things around in the next 5 days...but then again, who would be that surprised if they did?

Valiant effort by an underbudgeted team. The big "what if" of this squad to me is Manny. He didn't have to be Boston Manny, but he could have been a 25HR 95 RBI presence to lengthen that lineup just a bit. Even a Marcus Thames or someone of that ilk, with 500 abs, would probably provide something similar.

Future is crazy bright though with Moore and Jennings. I would trade "Big Game" and try to get an upside bat in there. Or I wonder if they could get really bold and trade for a guy like Carlos Gonzalez.

Didn't Matt Joyce provide this for them instead?
