TE Evan Engram, DEN (1 Viewer)

Evan Engram caught 4-of-7 targets for 46 yards in the Giants' Week 16 loss to the Browns.

Engram was playing through a minor calf injury, but it didn't appear to limit him much. The tight end was productive in garbage time and nearly came down with a touchdown. That, of course, doesn't matter for those who rode him as a TE1/2 in fantasy semis. The Giants offense is hard to bet on unless Daniel Jones is healthy and the matchup is clean. It's unclear if Jones will be ready for next week, and the Giants will be playing in Baltimore. Engram will be more of a high-end TE2 than a mid-range TE1.

Evan Engram caught 2-of-4 targets for 17 yards in the Giants' Week 17 win over the Cowboys.

Engram saw at least seven targets in 9-of-16 games this season and fell one catch short of his previous career high of 64, set in his rookie year. Most of that had to do with Engram staying healthy for a full 16-game season for the first time in his four-year career. Engram finishes the year with 63-654-1 on 109 targets. The one touchdown is extremely disappointing, but Daniel Jones threw just 11 as a sophomore. The Giants badly need an upgrade under center, as Jones isn't the answer. The weakness of tight end will keep Engram in the fantasy TE1 conversation. He's scheduled to play 2021 under the fifth-year option at over $6 million.

Giants head coach Joe Judge said Evan Engram is "a guy that obviously we have to keep featuring in the offense.”

Judge added that he has "a ton of confidence" in Engram. Hopefully Judge's comment means the team will better use Engram after a 2020 season in which Giants offensive coordinator Jason Garrett utilized the athletic tight end as if he were late-career Jason Witten. Engram last year was fourth in tight end targets and tied George Kittle with eight drops. He saw a measly 17 red zone targets in 2020 -- fewer than Tyler Eifert. Giants fans, beat writers, and fantasy managers seem to be apoplectic about Engram's dropped passes, but he remains one of the game's most talented tight ends.

He wouldn't be the 1st player to get drop-itus under control and emerge as a FF talent. His size & speed is there & he could become an elite TE.  I don't think that video is definitive of the dude's capability.

The only question is whether he can put it together mentally.  If so, he'll be among the top 5 TEs for years to come.

But it's still an "if", not a "when".  I got him for $10 in our start-up auction draft, and this year moved on to Pitts, but he's still on my squad. I've thus far resisted the buy-low guys trying to get him for picks or scrubs at other positions. I'mma give him 1 more year to see what happens. He was cheap enough to ride it out & then drop him or move him cheap if it comes to that.

To me, the upside is still worth a gamble.

Couple little known facts about Evan Engram from 2021

  • PFF graded him TE53. Not even sure how that’s in the realm of possibility.
  • he made his first Pro Bowl. on my mothers grave, I’m not making this up. chosen over Robert Tonyan’s 11 TD season and Logan Thomas’ shocking age 29 breakout.

I knew the 1st fact. I didn’t know the 2nd.

The opportunity is there for him to be so much better than he was in 2021. He is a physically imposing specimen who is far faster than his size should allow.

Contrary to all available evidence, he does have hands at the end of his arms. All he needs to do is use them. 💡

Only 4; tight ends had games with more than 120 yards receiving last year. You know the other three.

I'm kind of shocked to see he's only going into his 5th year. That video above was painful to watch. Sure, drops can be fixed and he certainly has size and speed. There are so many other things going against him though:

  • Danny Wooden Nickels
  • Injury history (39/64 games played)
  • 58% catch rate (8 drops)
He's obviously cheap this year compared to others, but I think I'd take the flyer on Tonyan or Jonnu before him.

He's absolutely maddening, but I just cannot give up yet.  He just has such excellent athleticism for a TE.  By all accounts he has a good attitude, and is reportedly a hard worker.  I will continue to buy, especially as cheap as he currently is, and hope he can fix the drops.

Evan Engram (calf) is uncertain for Week 1 against the Broncos.

For some reason playing in last weekend's preseason finale after the G-Men had been cautious with their starters all summer, Engram is highly questionable for the opener. Coach Joe Judge referred to "gray area" with his tight end. Kyle Rudolph would be the next pass catcher up in the seam if Engram can't go. If you are deciding on players on the TE1/2 borderline, this is a small strike against Engram.

The Athletic's Dan Duggan reports that the Giants plan to evaluate Evan Engram (calf) before deciding whether to place him on IR.

With Engram having made the 53-man roster, he is now eligible to return from the IR after missing three games. Engram was the only player missing from Tuesday's practice, and it appears the the calf injury he suffered in the Giants' preseason game is a real threat to cost him multiple games this season. Engram should be viewed as highly doubtful for Week 1.

He's going on IR-Eligibe. I saw the injury happen, no way he's running and cutting by next Monday.

Evan Engram (calf) practiced in full pads on Thursday.

There was speculation as recently as Wednesday that Engram might begin the year on injured reserve, but this should throw cold water on that possibility. Practicing in full pads 10 days before the Giants' opener has Engram on track to suit up against the Broncos in Week 1, though we still have a ways to go between now and then. How Engram's body responds on Friday will be key. Engram is still a solid floor-based TE2 in fantasy drafts.

The Athletic's Dan Duggan reports TE Evan Engram's (calf) practice activity "doesn’t bode well" for his Week 1 status.

Engram has been limited to working on a side field since going down in the preseason finale. The Giants held off placing him on IR, but there are doubts Engram will be ready for the season opener in eight days. Even if Engram plays, a healthy Kyle Rudolph, who returned to practice last week following offseason surgery, could out-snap him in Week 1.

One of the most frustrating FF players ever. Has all the talent in the world. Compare him to Kyle Pitts and Engram looks better. But it's always something with him. Injuries. Poor usage.

I'm with you. This kid felt like he was gonna be a mini-Tony G. Just can't put it together for whatever reasons.

Giants TE Evan Engram (calf) remained sidelined for Monday's practice.

It's nothing new for Engram as he remains a "long shot" to play in Week 1 against the Broncos, but Kaden Smith's additional absence qualified Kyle Rudolph (foot), who just recently passed his physical to join the team in practice, as New York's only available tight end Monday. Rudolph would be considered a desperate flier guaranteed to play snaps for any manager who waited to draft TE until the later rounds if both Engram and Smith were ruled out.

Giants TE Evan Engram has been ruled out for Week 1 due to a calf injury.

Engram suffered the injury during the Giants' third preseason game, and he evidently has not made enough progress to play in Week 1. Kyle Rudolph isn't a fantasy-viable option given the state of the Giants' offense and a low-scoring game environment, but he will start in Engram's absence.

Something up with these sub 6 foot 4 sub 250 lb tight ends? Irv smith and engram fit this bill. Most tight ends clock in above 250 and the height too. Feels like they are just tweeners that keep getting hurt

A complete tease. I'm ready to write him off at this point. He seems nicked up, drops too many passes, and just doesn't have the "it" factor. He has loads of talent. I hope he somehow turns the corner.

Engram played a full season last year.

This injury is minor, they have a quick turn around next week with a Thursday game but he should be back by week 3 at least.

This is why we have benches.

Personally I thought he looked pretty good what little I saw of him in camp/preseason. Made me wonder if rehabbing from foot surgery last off-season might have left him not in his normal condition last year.

In the end I might look back at his injury as a blessing in disguise as it's contributed to me being a little more confident holding off on TE's knowing I could pull him at a discount later.

Giants head coach Joe Judge said Evan Engram is "making a lot of jumps in terms of how he’s working" and has a shot to play Thursday against Washington.

New York didn't hold a Monday practice but Engram was projected as not practicing as he recovers from the calf issue. He'd have to heal up in a hurry if he's going to suit up Thursday night against the Football Team. Kyle Rudolph is likely to get another start after running a respectable 27 pass routes and catching two of five targets for eight yards in Week 1 against the Broncos. Rudolph would be a desperation fantasy option against Washington.

All of the Giants beat writers were saying this was his best camp. Hopefully this is just a minor set back and he is ready to go in week 3. I'd like to think with Golladay on the outside, things might open up for Engram in the middle. Of course having the clapper calling plays might night make a difference.

Evan Engram (calf) returned to a limited practice Wednesday.

After missing Weeks 1-2 with his calf strain, Engram is trending in the right direction for Week 3 against the Falcons with the limited practice to open the week. The Falcons have given up three touchdowns to tight ends through two weeks.

Evan Engram (calf) was participating in Giants practice again on Thursday.

Coach Joe Judge said Engram had a "good" day on Wednesday, strongly hinting he is finally trending toward making his 2021 debut on Sunday against the Falcons. Engram will be returning to a crowded offense where Saquon Barkley is getting healthier and Sterling Shepard is dominating targets. Even against the Falcons' awful defense, Engram is a low-upside TE2 for Week 3 while we wait to see what kind of shape he is in.

Does he play and play effectively this week 3 as it's a nice match up against ATL. I know lots of mouths to feed, but when desperate lol is Engram a viable play and what about ROS - top 12, top 8?

I completely ignored the te position this year and swiped Engram super late.  Choice between him and Knox-the great matchup of Atlanta makes me think I’m rolling the dice with Evan.

My question as well.

Does Shephard’s emergence a negative on Engram and vise versa?

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Evan Engram (calf) is expected to play in Week 3 against the Falcons.

Engram has yet to play this year, sitting out the first two weeks of 2021 while dealing with his calf injury. He suffered the injury late in training camp and has been in and out of practice ever since. With Engram giving Daniel Jones another option to look to in the short and intermediate areas of the field, Sterling Shepard should see a reduced target share in Week 3. Rapoport added that Kenny Golladay (hip) remains a game-time decision. Golladay's questionable health and lackluster start to the year make him a fade in all formats.

Evan Engram caught 2-of-6 targets for 21 yards in the Giants' Week 3 loss to the Falcons.

Engram lost a fumble that set the Falcons up with great field position before halftime. That fumble came on a 13 yard reception. Engram had only another eight yard catch on the day, with zero reception in the second half. It was a quiet return for Engram, but at least he was able to take the field, after his status for Week 3 appeared to be in serious doubt. He'll be tough to trust in Week 4 against the Saints.

Evan Engram caught 5-of-6 targets for 27 yards in the Giants' Week 4 win over the Saints.

Engram also lost three yards on a red zone jet sweep. It was an hysterically bad play call from OC Jason Garrett on 2nd-and-goal from the Saints' two-yard in the third quarter. Elsewhere, Engram's missed connection was a drop. Engram appeared to have zero explosion or burst in his second game back from a calf injury. Engram has looked flat out bad so far in 2021. He has the talent to change that, but TE1 relevance is looking miles from possible right now.
