TE Ja'Tavion Sanders, CAR (1 Viewer)

Reminds me of a young George Kittle
Huge UT fan here. I don't see the Kittle comp much, but I think Sanders will be a pretty solid NFL/fantasy TE.
Kittle is a better blocker probably
Definitely. Maybe Sanders can hone that skill but right now that's one of his deficiencies. Also, Sanders has way more raw athletic talent. Kittle is certainly athletic, don't get me wrong, but Sanders is a freak. Not Pitts-like freakish but up there. I'd perhaps comp him to David Njoku? Both 6'4", 245ish. Similar 40 times.

Really like Sanders as a target in round 2. He obviously doesn't have Bowers upside, but he'd have been the TE1 in some recent (2022, 2020) drafts.

It’ll be very much of a pick-your-flavor for teams in the tight end market on Day 2 and 3 of the NFL Draft.

For teams looking for a high-end seam threat after Brock Bowers, there’s a good chance #Texas JT Sanders is the best option. Two key stats highlight best what he can do in the NFL

1. @Jatavionsanders tied for 1st among all 2024 draft eligible TEs on catches of 15+ yards (tied with Dallin Holker of CSU).

His smoothness in the seam and balance as a positioning route runner is what he has over almost any other TE in the class.

2. He was one of just 3 FBS TEs in the 2024 draft class with over 50% of his contested catches caught (min. 5 targets, per @PFF_College). When he is in traffic, Sanders shows the toughness to extend, finish, and create big plays after the catch.

Teams differ on how he’ll be used early in the NFL and where he stands to still develop, but his talent and pass catching skill set compared to the rest of the 2024 draft class tight ends is hard to match.

I think he's flying under the radar a bit. He was extremely effective in college, and that was with Adonai Mitchell, Xavier Worthy, and Jonathan Brooks taking touches. On a less loaded offense, I think he would have been a clear top target.

Still, back-to-back 600+ yard seasons from a college TE is very impressive. Only Sanders, Bowers, LaPorta, Mayer, Likely, Cole Turner (outlier) and Pitts have done it in the last 5 years. Only Bowers had anywhere near the target competition Sanders had. Bowers of course did it all 3 years at Georgia.

Canales said he’s seen “exponential growth” from Ja’Tavion Sanders in technique in camp.

That’s good, because Ian Thomas is dealing with a calf injury that could sideline him close to Week 1, Canales says.

Shaq Thompson has a hamstring injury, Tommy Tremble (hamstring) is a wk away.

"Sanders figures to be a work in progress as a run blocker, but he could impact the passing game as a rookie — thanks to his length, speed and those massive hands...Sanders described his hands — which measured 10 1/8 inches at the combine — as both 'abnormally large' and 'grippers.' But he’s trying to deemphasize the one-handed snares in the NFL, prioritizing securing the ball with two hands, then tucking and running with it."

Anything to see here for redraft? How does he look?

I might be without Ferguson and the waiver wire is bare. It's him, Kmet, or Likely.

Anyone actually watch CAR?

I was gonna ask that. I was looking for a TE cheap for my FD entry, and he stands out as a possibilty. Haven't seen his play, but stats indicate he may be on the rise. I think Car has a chance this weekend, any others have this thought?

Thoughts on this guy headed into year two? Seems like decent potential for where he is ranked. I do not know much about the CAR offense and how they incorporate TEs.

Read somewhere TE's in Dave Canales offense accounted for 20% target share, which seems doable given the WR group. Compare that percentage against Total Targets (Mike Clay) and you get about 90-95 targets... if Sanders proves to be better than Tommy Tremble, should be a decent TE flier.

I just don't know if Sanders is any good and all production would be reliant on Bryce Young continuing to take a step forward.

“He really came back in such great shape. Looking for a big year out of him.”

- Dave Canales on Ja’Tavion Sanders

I don't know what I expected but I was very impressed by Ja'Tavion Sanders as a rookie. I did not expect him to be as trusted in-line as he was and, especially for a rookie, he was pretty good.

The development has been great. Technique is better and he pass protects well too.

Stop. Bumping. This. Thread.

Darn it now I did it too.

Well, since we are bringing attention here now; I think this is going to be my last round pick in most of my leagues this year. Goal will be nail a top 4 TE and have him as a high upside backup, but regardless, TE29 and round 17 ADP feels like a bar he can sleep his way over if he's healthy and beats out Tremble.

I'm in a lot of heavy TE premium leagues and have to pay attention to these types. My gut tells me we see a breakout fringe TE1 fantasy season from Sanders. Young is a better QB than he's been made out to be, and Carolina doesn't have tons of weapons. A 60/700/6 type of season feels realistic if Leggette/Coker don't take over as the number two passing options.

Been trying to move him all offseason. I’ve got no reason to be down on him, just seems like these upside TEs rarely break out for fantasy.

Guess I’ll hold for now.

TEs outside the top 3-5 needle movers are meaningless in non-premium formats
Especially a guy like Sanders who hasn’t done anything yet and isn’t super hyped. These TE types are best as add-ons to bigger deals.

I'm a fan of this guy and he was starting to get some action before he was injured in the KC game - 88 and 85% snap share the two games prior.

In redraft just monitor but in dynasty I am holding in TEP. CAR is starved for someone to step up and demand more targets. I'm willing to wait and see what happens here. It is only his second year so it still could take some time and will depend on bench size/league settings if you hold. I am for now as I would like to see how things shake out this year.

Correct me if I’m off base here. Was there concern about his work ethic in college l. I apologize if I’m thinking of someone else.

Google AI produced this result on a search for any work ethic concerns from college football:

No, there is no indication that Ja'Tavion Sanders has had any work ethic issues. In fact, multiple reports suggest that he has a strong work ethic. Coach Sarkisian of Texas spoke highly of Sanders' work ethic, calling him a leader who isn't afraid to speak up or step outside his comfort zone. Additionally, The Draft Network highlighted his willingness to do the "dirty work" on the field, which is indicative of a strong work ethic.

Thanks. I must be confusing him with someone else. I didn’t feel like googling it

I heard he was a solid player at Texas and produced when called upon. Some say there was lots of meat left on the bone, mainly because he played with Xavier Worthy and Adonai Mitchell.

I'm intrigued by Sanders in hopes he can build on what he did last year when he took over the starting roll mid-season and then unfortunately got hurt pretty bad landing on his neck.

It was Adonai Mitchell I was thinking of, not Sanders.
