TE Rico Gathers, Free Agent (1 Viewer)

I expect Gathers to have a very minimal role this season.  I would not overpay for him.  He is an exciting long-term dynasty investment, but be prepared to sit on him for awhile before you reap any significant dividends on that investment.  Gather's performance thus far in preseason is extremely encouraging; however, he is still a raw prospect, and the Tight End position is a notoriously difficult position to break through at.

Cowboys placed TE Rico Gathers (concussion) on injured reserve.

He's can resume practicing in six weeks and playing in eight weeks, so he's out until Week 9 at the earliest. Gathers was a preseason sensation before suffering what is apparently a severe concussion, earning first-team reps in two-tight end sets alongside Jason Witten. Gathers remains a Dynasty-league hold.

Appreciate the update. I’ve been holding him for a year in a TE premium dynasty league and I’ve been trying to keep up with reports from Dallas media. It seems like the theme has been generally optimistic but there are lingering questions about the nature of the injury and his potential role if/when he is able to practice again.

I have been holding him in a few standard PPR leagues mostly on I.R. and will have to move I.R. players to regular roster right after the Super Bowl.

However after reading this from the CBS link, I think I will cut him entirely:

Gathers absorbed a helmet-to-helmet hit during training camp last summer and, by all accounts, still hasn't cleared concussion protocol. However, it's now evident the tight end is dealing with more than a typical concussion, which helps explain why his recovery has taken as long as it has. It's still too early to know when he could be back on the field, but there's optimism he'll be able to participate in OTAs and minicamp in some capacity this spring with the hope to be fully ready to play when training camp rolls around in late July
It is a bit disturbing that he still hasn't cleared concussion protocol after this length of time. Also, if he does make it back, I would question if he is just one more serious concussion away from ending his career permanently. Would rather roll the dice on other developmental players that don't have his health issues.

Perhaps, but the jaw problem should not be a factor in the clearing the concussion protocol, or at least I don't see how it is connected.
Yeah if roster space is an issue I think it’s a tough call knowing what we know (or how unclear things are) now, esp on the concussion front.

I'm not ready to buy in that the jaw or any injury is still an issue, some stuff seems odd.

A few things give me pause on buying this but the biggest one is that Stephen Jones addressed thoughts on bringing him back in this article from December, Stephen talks Rico return.   Not one place does Stephen still cite a lingering injury issue as being the reason.

Bryan Broaddus, who is an ex-scout who works for Cowboys.com,  had a few tweets during the season that made you think there was more going on. One tweet said there people inside the organization that did not want to see him, another said the coaching staff did not want to play him and the front office was not forcing them.

A lot of wild theories floating around with one that he'd be so impressive that he'd do to Witten what Dak did to Romo. I don't know about all that but I don't think Garrett is a big Rico Gathers guy and just preferred he sit on IR all year is what I think is really up here.

I agree, something doesn’t add up. I don’t believe it’s the injury clearly there’s something else.

Concussion & conspiracy theories aside, Rico Gathers might be the best dynasty stash in FF.

”Freak of nature” gets thrown around too much, but Gathers fits the bill. 285-pound people aren’t supposed to be that fluid. He simply looks like a gigantic WR.

Gathers is inexperienced and raw, but his physical ability, alone, should make him a weapon early on. Virtually unlimited upside.

Dude, I want him to blow up more than anybody not named Mrs. Gathers but you're waaaaaay overhyping this guy. Let's see if he can muster up his first start in the NFL before we build his own wing in  Canton.

I used the words ‘should’ & ‘upside’ which means I’m cautiously optimistic. I’m not crowning Gathers yet, but no other player in the dynasty stash category offers his upside. You’re too cautious if you’re not all in on Gathers (at least as far as FF is concerned).

There’s concern about the concussion, but I’m really high on Gathers both for FF & the Cowboys. Perfect stash due to price to upside ratio.

To clarify, I’m not saying Gathers will be a stud. It’s hard to say what he’ll do at this point, but all the indicators are pointing way up other than the concussion.

I do know Gathers is the type of prospect who can give you a huge advantage in your dynasty leagues if he hits because you didn’t have to use major resources to acquire him. His price to upside ratio is incredible. I’d think Gathers’ current price is very reasonable & possibly free depending on if your league has open FA in the offseason.

Great news. Rico can be a real difference-maker. He’s one of those TEs that nobody, & I mean nobody, can match up with. He’s just too big & athletic. 6’6 285 pound humans aren’t supposed to be that athletic.

If Rico stays healthy & keeps developing (& he’s already shown enormous potential), look the F out. He’ll make Dak’s job much easier. The Cowboys had a pathetic receiving corps last season & Rico could go a long way towards fixing that problem.

I get a Michael Turner vibe here when it comes to Rico. Different position, but a speed/size freak, and had to sit for a while on what seemed like obvious talent. Hopefully he cashes in for us all.

FREE lottery ticket.  If a hit, then yeah!!!, if not, then no loss and back to the WW.  I have him in 6 of 8 dynasty leagues and every one of them was a WW pickup.  I think most dynasty owners obtained him this way, just as I did.  So why not just hang on to see what happens?

Good idea. I will hang on to Rico.

Good lord!

Stashed him at the end of last year.  Is he healthy?  Its concussions with him, right?
Dallas Cowboys tight end Rico Gathers hasn't played a regular-season game in two professional seasons, yet he's confident Year 3 will mark his breakout.

He later added “how much you wanna bet I can throw this football over those mountains over there?”

Rico time BAYBEE!

I wouldn't be opposed to bringing in a decent veteran, but we need to see what we got in Rico.

He's got enormous potential.

Cowboys third-year TE Rico Gathers is recovered from his 2017 concussion.

Gathers missed the entirety of last season after suffering a summer concussion coupled with jaw and neck injuries. The 2016 sixth-round project has yet to appear in a regular-season game but flashed big-time potential last preseason to the tune of a 7-106-2 line in two exhibitions. He has some Martellus Bennett to him. Gathers is in the mix to replace retired Jason Witten in an offense desperate for playmakers in the passing game. He's worth a flier in best-ball leagues.

Here's a good article on Gathers.  https://thelandryhat.com/2018/05/11/dallas-cowboys-curious-case-tight-end-rico-gathers/

The optimistic in me is hoping that Gathers would be similarly utilized at least 60% as Jimmy Graham in his 2nd year with Saints.  Naturally, the pessimistic in me knows that Cowboys lack Saints' HC Payton's offensive imagination and scheming.  Regardless, Cowboys are now lacking proven and veteran pass-catchers after Witten's retirement and waiving Dez Bryant.  And they will be easy to defend, knowing Cowboys' predictable tendency to run.

Here is one from a better source, don't get to discouraged by  the headline: Witten on Cowboys TE's
Yeah, the only encouraging aspects in Gathers are his sheer athleticism and physicality.  After all, he was 4th highest rebounder during 2017-2018 college basketball season (actually averaged nearly 5 offensive rebounds).  But still, I dont really have a full faith in Cowboys' coaching staff.

Bottom line, Gathers is a receiver. And we know big (gigantic in his case), athletic receivers are difficult to defend.

Whether they play a lot of 12 personnel or utilize him as a Joker, Rico will get a chance to fulfill (or start to fulfill at the very least) his enormous potential this season.

Yep, that's why he's only going to see snaps in the red zone.  But if its FF points he's the one to stash.

This is the issue. He's not a typical TE, it requires some creativity to integrate a player like him and I have concerns that the Cowboys staff are the right men for the job.
You have a fair point, but they're revamping their offensive strategy as we speak.

Also, it's not like Rico doesn't have the raw physical ability to be a good blocker. His size at 6-6 285 along with the skills required to be a top rebounder means he's got the potential to be at least decent at the very least.

Right now, I'm sure they view him as an F (move) TE or a Joker (who could line up anywhere). That said, it doesn't mean down the road Rico can't be a complete TE given his size & athletic ability.

To me, the Rico experiment has already been a success & shows Dallas' deftness at acquiring personnel, simply off what he showed in 2 preseason games.

He only cost a 6th round pick & has a minimal-type salary. Rico will eat up LBs & it's going to be amusing at times seeing DBs trying to cover & tackle him. That's the upside.

Rico just needs to stay on track & keep developing.

Wow.  Thanks for the vote of confidence, coach!

Rico Gathers - TE -  Cowboys

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said third-year TE Rico Gathers is still in the early stages of his development.

"He needs to play more football," said Garrett. "We could practice five times a day and that wouldn't be enough for him and a lot of our younger players, just because they need so much work." A 2016 sixth-round project, Gathers didn't appear in any games as a rookie and spent last season on IR. The Cowboys have a wide open depth chart with Jason Witten retired, but Gathers looks likely to open training camp behind Geoff Swaim and Blake Jarwin.
