Pretty simple, really.

If you draft Gronk, you're burning a high draft choice going all in on his upside.

You're not gonna then turn around and spend a mid-round pick on another TE of any quality that is just gonna occupy bench space.

By the time you get to TE12+ it's all WW fodder, anyway. Just stream someone.

 You know he's gonna miss time. A backup TE is a necessity. Mine is Engram

Goes with the position. Olsen, Eifert, Reed....the top tight ends are all battling injuries and missing time.  Gronk is also impossible to drag down so defenders always dive in at his legs.  To me, he's worth the risk.  He played 4 games and missed one. If he does that all season, he'll still finish as the number one tight end. He's in a tier by himself. Kelce and maybe Zack Ertz are the only other two that I'd have in the tier below him. 

 
It's funny most of my leagues where Gronk was started the team won anyway. Sort of like 0 QB theory. Personally I was 4-1 starting Gronk this week and the team that lost also started Diggs. And 0-1 against teams that started Gronk.

 
NFL suspended Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski one game for violating the league's player-safety policy.

It's the expected, and deserved, outcome after Gronk's illegal Sunday hit left Bills CB Tre'Davious White with a concussion. Gronk was arguably lucky to escape with only a one-game ban. Although both Gronk and coach Bill Belichick expressed remorse after the game, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Gronk will appeal the suspension. If it's unsuccessful, he will miss next Monday's game against the Dolphins, or as fantasy owners call it, the first week of the playoffs. Gronk can return for Week 15 against the Steelers. Dwayne Allen will get the start in Gronk's absence, but won't be more than a wheezing TE2 for fantasy purposes.

He got off REAL lucky. That was a vicious intentional hit and Tre'Davious White may not even play this week.

Rob Gronkowski caught 6-of-9 targets for 81 yards and a touchdown in the Patriots' Divisional Round blowout win over the Titans.

The mystery all week was how Tennessee would guard Gronk. They came out with FS Kevin Byard shadowing him in man coverage and Gronk promptly beat the All-Pro for a 14-yard gain on the opening drive. Gronk was somewhat quiet until he ripped a 27-yard pickup in the third quarter. Gronkowski’s night went from quiet to loud when he out-muscled Byard for a fourth-quarter touchdown to extend New England’s lead to 35-7. Gronkowski has now scored a TD in six straight playoff games. The Pats will face the winner of Sunday’s Jaguars-Steelers game in next week’s AFC Championship round.

Rob Gronkowski caught 9-of-15 targets for 116 yards and two touchdowns in the Patriots' Super Bowl 52 loss to the Eagles.

Philly frustrated Gronk with cornerback and safety double teams in the first half, holding him to nine yards on his first six targets. The Patriots’ big halftime adjustment was force feeding Gronk, which Tom Brady did four times for 68 yards and a touchdown on New England’s opening third-quarter drive alone. Early in the fourth frame, Gronk (6’6") skied high above Eagles CB Ronald Darby (5’11") for a four-yard TD. 2017 was a bounce-back season for Gronk, who missed eight games in 2016 and missed only two this past season, and only one was due to injury. Gronkowski led all tight ends in yards (1,083) and averaged a deep threat-like 15.7 yards per catch. Already the greatest tight end in history going on age 29, Gronkowski should enjoy a rare surgery-free 2018 offseason.

Gronk is awesome, but the schtick about begging for a call every time he doesn't catch it (including on the last play in the Super Bowl, after he'd pushed off) gets a little tired. 

 
Well he can't afford to get any dumber if he wants to have quality of life later on....so minimizing future hits to the head is probably a good idea.

Most of the time it's justified.  And granted it was a hail mary so not gonna be called, but he got absolutely mauled on that play.  Like if that happened in the street, the cops would've been called.

He committed offensive pass interference on the hail mary. Literally shoved the defended out of his way. It's laughable to whine that he was interfered with.

Pretty sure if a 250 lb man runs full speed for 10 yards & launches himself shoulder first into another guys chest on the street, the cops would’ve been called as well, but that happens all the time on the football field; so that isn’t your best argument.

He hasn't spent a dime of his NFL salary, ever. He lives off his endorsements and his estimated net worth is between 30 and 153 million depending on which site you believe. So I believe he isn't planning to drag his career like Gates or Gonzalez. 

With all that said I don't believe he leaves this year. I think he is upset that they just lost a super bowl, he just had a concussion 2 weeks earlier and watched a teammate get knocked out in the super bowl. It is smart to take time and not make an emotional decision. 

My personal take is he plays out this contract and then hangs then up.

MMQB's Albert Breer believes "Rob Gronkowski’s rumblings about retirement are real."

According to Breer, Gronk has "been responsible with his finances," so walking away early is not as big of a financial concern as it might be for other players. Gronk is also a veritable star who reportedly is looking into an acting career once his playing days are finished. We still think it is likely Gronkowski returns in 2018, but considering the beating he takes each season and the options available to him, it is not surprising he is at least thinking about walking away.

The Boston Sports Journal's Greg Bedard passes along word from a "Bill Belichick-friendly source" that the longer Rob Gronkowski goes without committing to the team, the chances of the Patriots trading him increase.

This is pure speculation, but it isn't the first time we've seen it, as MMQB's Albert Breer hinted at it as well in a piece on Thursday. Both Breer and Bedard are ex-Patriots beat writers with plenty of connections to the team. Gronkowski has yet to inform the Patriots of his 2018 plans, and some think Belichick could use that as fuel to trade the star tight end, who may be tiring of playing at a massive discount in New England. Bedard mentions the 49ers and Rams as suitors should Gronkowski become available. 29-year-old (in May) Gronk is the fourth-highest-paid tight end at $9 million per year and has two years left on his deal.

According to ESPN's Jeff Darlington, Rob Gronkowski is "pretty certain" he'll return to the Patriots in 2018.

While Gronk has yet to make an official decision, Darlington hears the 28-year-old plans to continue playing as long as Tom Brady remains with the team. At one point during the 2017 season a physically exhausted Gronk told friends he was "likely to retire" and though that sentiment seems to have faded, Darlington notes that he still has "lingering frustrations" with coach Bill Belichick. Gronkowski has reportedly grown weary of New England's "high-strung" culture while Belichick has begun to question whether the tight end is "all-in." On a more positive note, sources have told Darlington that any "friction" between the two should ease once Gronkowski fully commits to football again.

Rob Gronkowski will not attend the start of New England's offseason program Monday.

Tom Brady won't be present at the start of New England's program either as he's on a business trip in Qatar. Schefter continues that Gronkowski is still considering whether to play this upcoming season, and has had "good communication" with the Patriots. Gronk reportedly told friends at one point during the 2017 season he was "likely to retire" but ESPN's Jeff Darlington has since noted the 28-year-old is "pretty certain" he'll return. Sources also told Darlington that any "friction" between Gronkowski and head coach Bill Belichick should ease once the tight end fully commits to football again.
