It is nearly identical to Jimmy Graham.
Just what DJ needs. Wonder what was the reason he wasn’t picked earlier. No one moved up to take him. What’s the catch?

The rub on Johnson is he doesn't play to his measurables or give consistent effort. He tends to disappear for stretches.

I posted his video breakdown from Giants NOW on the Giants thread.

How much of that was due to Penn State scheme or offensive design? Some of what I read was he was underutilized and could use more structured coaching.
I like him but see him as a project in need of development

My favorite stat for Giants’ 4th round pick, TE Theo Johnson

55% Targeted Success Rate vs Zone Coverage

NY Sports Guy
What is targeted success rate?

Doug Analytics
The % of targets that result in positive EPA (Expected Points Added). Basically did the target result in the offense being in a better position to score.

Example:
3 yard catch on 3rd and 2 = positive EPA
1 yard catch on 1st and 10 = negative EPA
Drop/incompletion = negative EPA

I would put most of it on their old scheme. OC was fired in the off season. He had been a huge disappointment.

I like Daniel Bellinger. The Giants have spoken highly of him since day one. He can block well.

If Waller isn't retiring or whatever the talk is now, then I don't think much of this pick.

If Waller isn't there, then Theo has his work cut out for him. Doable, but not at all the shoe-in these post draft writeups are making it seem to be

"It was very wise of the Giants to grab more options at tight end, and Johnson had flashes on tape throughout his career that would make you think he's a future NFL starter. If the Giants can coach him up, he could be a steal." - @nfldraftscout on Giants TE Theo Johnson #NYGiants

Theo Johnson is an intriguing pick for the #Giants in Round 4.

He's an ultra-athletic tight end (9.93 RAS) with a similar skillset to Darren Waller. They needed depth there with Waller mulling retirement.

Maybe he can develop into a potential starter. Has blocking upside too.

Just going to post this here...

I mean, there has to be a big improvement in play-calling by Mike Kafka/Brian Daboll, and a massive improvement in actual QB ability/progression/anticipation by Daniel Jones.

The annoying factor is that Jones never challenged the D with Waller anytime he ran deeper routes. Jones only found synergy with short routes due to the style of the offense/his lack of speed with progression vs. lack of protection time. Plus, you're now removing Saquon Barkley on O (one of the best pass-protecting RBs in the league last 2 years)?

I don't see Theo making a big impact in Year 1 with Daniel Bellinger ahead of him unless something changes.

I agree that Theo is a project. I was actually more excited when I thought he had a year to learn behind Waller. However, he is TE#2 on the depth chart and should see the field this year. He might still be two years away from being a full time starter.

Giants' Brian Daboll expects Gronk-like dominance from Theo Johnson 🤔

"Daboll, who coached and is close with Gronk, has been showing Johnson clips of the retired tight end and expressing a desire to see similar results on the field.

“There’s countless times where we’ll be in the middle of a meeting and he’ll be like, ‘Theo, Dabs wants to see you,'” Johnson told Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com. “Pulls me out of the meeting and I’m like, ‘What could this possibly be about?’

“And then he’s got up a clip of Gronk just running somebody over, catching a back shoulder, and he’s like, ‘This is what we expect from you.’ I can tell he puts a lot of intentional eye into the tight end position … I think it goes to show how he feels about me and what he thinks I’m capable of.”

Coincidentally, Daboll did try to lure Gronkowski out of retirement last offseason."

Theo Johnson is TE1 for #Giants if he continues to be used the way we saw today.

Johnson then Manhertz, Bellinger is how I see it. Cager with a hamstring rn. Tyree Jackson has made some plays with the 2

More coming on Talkin' Ball LIVE tonight @YouTube

“Theo Johnson, TE. He has flashed and will play a major role as the team's top receiving tight end with Lawrence Cager out for an extended period with a groin injury.”

There’s a lot to like about what we’re seeing here with Theo Johnson in this cut up. The movement skills, the plays away from frame, how much ground he covers on the vert and some upside YAC wise too. Held his own as a blocker too.
The Giants building is excited about him too.

Jacob Gibbs
Felt the exact same. Was genuinely surprisingly encouraged about every part of his game upon rewatch

He can be a monster if Russ is benched fast. With Russ 3/4 of the field is not available. He is a reasonable target for 50/50 balls. Pretty much the only throw Russ has left

Theo Johnson vs Mason Taylor and Elijah Arroyo and Harold Fannin and Terrence Ferguson?
There is a large tier of young talented TE’s right now, no idea who will end up emerging as it is a tough position to project.
I'll take a stab at it for the next two years.

Johnson / Ferguson - either order at 1 and 2. Both will most likely be featured in their respective offense more than the three below. Johnson not as much as Ferguson probably.
Taylor - I think he will start, but it may not matter in that offense.
Arroyo - I like better than Taylor, but something tells me Taylor will get more targets.
Fannin - Might have more talent than all of them, but I don't like his chances for success the next two years, or longer.

I would add Ja’Tavion Sanders and probably Brenton Strange to that grouping. Not a big Ferguson fan and still cannot believe the chose him over CB Will Johnson, but this clump of young TE’s could be ranked differently from everyone.

If you’re going to include Strange and Sanders III would put Strange at the top. I might put Sanders and Taylor together, but certainly not in the top two. I still don’t trust the Young. You’re underselling Ferguson.

I think Strange is good enough to be productive, but not dynamic enough to not be replaced. I missed you mentioned two years, so I would agree. May be underselling Ferguson, my eyes just do not see it with him.

I think Strange has stud potential. I wish I could get more Strange :scared:

Thanks, maybe I need to take a closer look.

Dulcich gives me pause.
I didn't have him then but many were praising him his rookie year with Russ. He hasn't done much since so he winds up with the Giants and...there's Russ.

Jermaine Eluemaynor. Do they have to help the RT fairly often?

Dulcich doesn't give me pause, he's always given me acid indegestion. Now that I take an acid reducer I never think of Dulcich.
