TE Zach Ertz, WAS (2 Viewers)

If he goes to either Philly or Baltimore, is he worth a pickup? Is there any fantasy value there with Goedert and Likely still on their respective teams?

Wouldn’t he have enough years of service to not go on waivers? Or is that different mid-season?

Post trade deadline exception.

Veterans land on the waiver wire if they are released during the season following the NFL trade deadline. The idea behind this is so a team who is no longer in playoff contention can’t release a player to go specifically sign with a given team because a trade could not be worked out in time.

Before the trade deadline, all vested veterans (4 years or more accrued service) are released without going on waivers & are free to sign with anyone.

How the news broke:

JJ Watt
Trying new things in retirement, so let’s steal @AdamSchefter job for a day...

TE Zach Ertz has requested & been granted his release from the Arizona Cardinals.

The 3-Time Pro Bowler plans to sign with a contender and make a run at his 2nd Super Bowl ring.

(This is easy Adam)

Confirming @JJWatt: Cardinals and TE Zach Ertz are mutually parting ways, with Arizona deciding to move forward with its TE Trey McBride while giving Ertz the opportunity to finish out the season somewhere else, per sources. Ertz will go on waivers.

I would have appreciated a return zinger to JJ. Missed opportunity.

What about the Dolphins? Their leading TE in receptions has 18 on the entire year and the other one has two. That’s it. Is that because they’re terrible or because TE’s simply are not part of the offensive design? If it’s the former, Ertz could be a valuable safety valve for Tua. Might not be fantasy relevant but could help in real life.

Is he still any good? I'm not convinced he's any better than what most teams already have on their roster.

No he isn't that good anymore, but could he be the #2 tight end on 2 tight end sets? I think so.
Is he a good blocker?
Nope. Rated below average for 8 straight season at run blocking. Ha ha

And any team acquiring him knows this...no one is bringing him to be Zack Ertz in his prime...they will bring him in to be a veteran depth piece with big-game experience that can hopefully make a few big catches and is still relevant enough that the defense has to account for him...playoff football is about situational football and if Ertz can get you a first down or two on something like 3rd and 9 he will have more than done what he was brought in for.

I guess people haven't learned from fantasy that productive TEs are hard to come by. In Ertz' time in ARI (ie, ignoring what he did with the Eagles), he averaged 4.6 rec/gm. This year, there are only 7 TE's averaging that many catches. Ertz also averaged 41.7 yds/gm across his time with the Cardinals. Only 13 TEs have produced at that level this year. If Ertz can play, even in a limited role or in certain situations, teams with TE injury issues should be on the phone with him, even if we think he's mostly washed up.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports the Eagles are expected to have interest in free agent Zach Ertz.

tank has been running low for some time, but the Eagles have vanishingly little pass-catching depth behind A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith and injured starting TE Dallas Goedert. Goedert does seem likely to return from his arm injury in Week 14, but Ertz — who reportedly wants to play for a Super Bowl contender — would be a no-brainer addition for his experience and reliable hands even if he’s no longer a big-play threat. Ertz would not have TE2 fantasy value in Philly unless Goedert were to remain sidelined longer than expected. Expert Ertz to sign somewhere following Week 13’s Sunday contests.

Ravens HC John Harbaugh said, “We like our tight ends. I think right now we’ll roll with those guy,” when asked about free agent TE Zach Ertz.
Ertz was released by the Cardinals last week and is free to sign with any team. Hoping to catch on with a contender, the Ravens have drawn plenty of speculation given the injury to Mark Andrews, but Harbaugh doesn’t appear interested in the veteran tight end at this time. It’s possible Harbaugh is just playing his cards close to his chest, but second-year tight end Isaiah Likely turned in a strong rookie campaign in 2022, and Charlie Kolar has been solid in limited action through two seasons. It was reported over the weekend that the Ravens, Bills, Chiefs, and Eagles were four teams interested in signing Ertz. We’ll see if the Ravens change their tune, but for now, we’ll assume they’re out on him.

Detroit needs bodies with two TEs on season ending IR (Zylstra, Mitchell) and a third who broke his forearm yesterday (Wright.)

Not a bad body to have around. Proven pass catching tight end. Love the signing. Not expecting big numbers or even decent numbers, but I'd be willing to bet he is gonna have a few big catches.

This is apparently very legal. Under what rubric can they do this?

Is Brady gonna come off the couch for the 49ers now?
He didn’t retire, he’s not under contract with another team, and signing such players during the playoffs is allowed. And one of their TEs got hurt.

Playoff teams are only permitted to sign a maximum of four free agents during the postseason and cannot sign more than two free agents in any one week.

NFL postseason roster rules

BTW, I believe this rule was modified after Purdy got hurt & the 49ers situation last year during the NFCCG. Previously, active rosters & practice squads were locked.

This gives them flexibility to maintain competitive balance in the event of injuries.
