I only found it because I visit the idp forum regularly. I'm sure there are others like me that don't post very often that would be willing to help once he finds out and this becomes more visible.

 
Lets hope shady doesn't play in some crappy weird IDP league and finds this thread as way to decompress

4,275 raised now.  Pretty cool that most of us don't even know this guy IRL but still able to raise this much in just 18 hours.  It says a lot about this place.  Kudos to everyone in here and especially Cappy, Shuke and GM         :thumbup:

This is unbelievable.  A guy most of us don't know IRL and we've raised over $5k for his family...speechless and humbled.

For what my opinion is worth - I deal with people going through stress that they can't handle on a daily basis.  It might be time to tell him this is here and go from there.  It might make the next fews a little less awful.

 
I think $5k+ in less than a day is amazing, and I agree it's probably a good idea to let him know soon as it might lift his spirits a bit.

if you raise it, and the new goal doesn't get met, is there any significance? not sure how the website works, or if there's some stipulation that if the goal isn't met, the money is all refunded or something stupid like that.

No significance at all. Purely an aesthetics thing at this point. 

 
Im not going to lie, if I was going through this and some guys I hang out with every day on a message board did this for me, I would probably lose it. 

This is a great thing we are doing guys. 

As others have said, even if insurance covers 100% of it, they will need the money.

Raise it a little bit at least to cover the 8% vig  and the income tax they'll have to pay, such that they're getting at least $5k free and clear. Maybe move it to $6k?

 
So as I was talking to Cappy and Shuke yesterday, we were going back and forth on what to set for a goal.  None of us had ever used Go Fund Me before, so we were all a little unsure how best to proceed.  Cappy suggested setting a 'stretch goal' of $5,000 and I said back to him "I don't know man, that seems unrealistic.  How about we start with something reasonable like $1,000? A nice round number".  

I'm proud to say I've never been so happy in my life to be wrong about something.  You people are good people and I'm amazed at your kindness.

It's a gift so I don't believe they will have to pay taxes under gift law, but I do not do tax law or know anything about Jersey income tax. 

Exit: I raised it to 10k because we will tell him today and then blast this in the FFA

One of Shady's friends who posts with him on another message board offered to put the Go Fund Me info on that site, but Shady will see it.  At this point, I think it's time to let him know and see if we can't get some help from another community to help reach our new goal. :thumbup:

In regards to taxes, I only know what tax act tells me to do. Any taxballguys out there? Probably not worth fretting about anyway.
