Baseball Stars is sweet. Ever get bored and create a team, and then create a couple more teams and keep trading the guys to your team with the high max of like the 85s and 88s or whatever?? The do a league and build yourself up to some super team that is way better than the American Dreams??

Yeah, that right there is one full day of boredom in winter when you are 12 years old.

 
they have sites that will let you play roms that have today's rosters, one has an all-time greats so you can have the 85 bears vs 00 Ravens....

Not remotely exaggerating at all.

Now, it would certainly be harder if you changed the playbook to the worst 8 plays, but using any team, with original playbook, and ALL backups........yeah, 16-0 and winning the super bowl easily with every team.

Now dont get me wrong, the potential to lose later in the season is there with fumbles and whatnot, plus sometimes teams with a few guys in excellent playing out of their minds............but I run out of bounds every chance I get when doing challenges like that.

yes... but I've done that even more recently that you are discussing... maybe like 5-6 years ago.

When I hacked my Wii you could put NES roms on it... and then it would play like the original NES.. but without the possibility of my team erasing because of the horrible cartridge storage system that would erase far too often.

I actually achieved my goal of building an all 89 or 90 max team.

At that point though there was no competition and it was just about getting triple crown winning players in simulated 125 game leagues.

In college I had some good dorm mates at the game and it was very competitive... but other than the dorms I never found anyone who was good enough for me to play with.

He received the opening kick-off 5 yards deep in his end zone and just stood there. He ended up getting tackled and they ruled it a safety (no touchbacks in Tecmo). We asked him what the heck he was doing, and he said, "I wanted a touchback."

We called him "Touchback Chuck" for the next 3 years.

I havent done it lately (tried) cause of that stupid erasing issue.

I am good enough to hang. I am sure I am not the best at THAT game, although I have never played anyone better. Not saying much though, not like I have traveled the world playing Baseball Stars.

 
Anyone ever score over 100 (well, 99, who knows how many points after that) against the computer without changing any plays of your or theirs?

Usually you gotta play the Cardinals or something. Always fun

Though no feat matters when facing the computer. All about player vs player baby

One of the best parts of the game was the smashing of the buttons because the more you did, the better chance to throw off the tackler / tackle the guy. I had always been one of the better at that, until my friend, who plays trumpet, revolutionized how we played. He would use his forefinger and middle finger like it was a trumpet and kicked our asses for a bit.

While I couldnt quite be as quick as him, my quick fingers from playing Sax and Clarinet gave me an advantage over everyone else.

This was my preferred method as well...THE best way to hit buttons quiclky...especially effective if you have one of those bigger game pads that you set on a table or on your lap because you could hit different sides of the same button with two fingers.

You dont have to be super fast to be able to tackle guys. You just need to not be slow, and you should never get shaken off no matter how fast someone else is hitting the button. My brother used to play with one of the turbo controllers (cause the others were broken in anger), and I didnt have to be lightning fast on the button to tackle him.

 
I forgot about one of my favorites on the original Tecmobowl...

I'd play as the Bears. I'd call the play with the short screen to Payton. I'd hike the ball and just start running straight back. I'd run as far back as I could with guys in pursuit of McMahon. Right before they got to him, I'd throw the screen to Payton. Since there were no incomplete passes, unless they had a guy on him, Payton would catch the ball and most of the defense was 25 yards behind the line of scrimmage. I just had to beat any CB who shed his blocker and it was a TD. Anybody else do that?

Even better with the colts and Trudeau, and when he throws the screen the ball doesnt arc. It moves ever so slowly a couple feet above the ground for like 50 yards, like a UFO, and gets to the Dickerson.

Awesome.

I thought the score on Super went three digits? I remember scoring 120+ with Houston.

 
Ugh, just tried to play Tecmo Super and it is so frustrating. The lag time from pressing the buttons to the actual effect on the field is like 1/4 seconds. It's not an original, it's one of those cheap knockoffs I bought a while back.

When doing the kick off I had to hit the button when the meter was BARELY into the red in order to kick it into the end zone.

When running I would zigzag real fast 3 times before the player on the screen made his first zig. Stupid.

I could only score 73. Giants vs Cardinals. Dumb.

Did we go to school together? LOL... I'm in the Cities (for a couple more weeks) and doubt we did (back in Cali), but yeah we did the same thing... good times.

I used the Eagles. QB Eagles (AKA Randall Cunningham) was friggin' unstoppable. Call a pass play, roll out and if your opponent called a run, you'd have Keith Jackson open in the middle. If they called a pass, QB Eagles was faster than most RBs, so you'd just blow past folks.

Would move Byars to WR since he had better hands than the starting WR. I think I used Byars and Quick at WR.

Reggie White was fast as balls on DEF.

I've also never been beaten at Double Dribble. My opponents always had some stupid rules that I had to play with, like I couldn't steal the ball or shoot threes. I'd still win. I can't claim I'm as good at Tecmo, but I always enjoyed it.

With the (Chicago) Bisons and the (Boston) Frogs, you could easily shoot the 3 from half court and hit nearly every time.

I also really enjoyed the 5-on-5 version for the Gameboy.

I have never met an equal in my entire life at that game (either game).

I know there has to be a ton of you in here who used to (maybe still are) be Tecmo Bowl junkies. What teams are you best with in each game??

San Fran and the Giants are probably my top two teams for each game.

Haha, the last handful of times I randomly come across someone who spits a big game (seriously, not jokingly), I have handily smoked them.

I'd be more than happy to play you in the original Tecmo Bowl, and bring a far superior game to the table as opposed to whoever you've been playing. Do you ever use NesBox.com? If that allows for the use of my USB nes controller then we've got a game to play. What do you think makes you so special at Tecmo Bowl?

What are you talking about???? The Browns are good in the original Tecmo Bowl. Rock solid playbook. Great spacing on the WR routes. Ozzie Newsome parks out in the flat on like pass 2, for easy freaking yards. Tricky offense to stop.

Yeah Kevin Mack is turtle slow, but eventually he blows up a defense with a good run here or there. Kosar has an above average arm, coupled with the playbook, defenses have to call a lot of the 2 pass plays....which eventually gets Big Mack going. Dude...Gerald freaking Ice Cube McNeil returning kicks? 2nd best kick returner on the game.

Hanford Dixon is also one of the best defensive backs in the game. He's really all they got but you can control a lot of stuff from that position. Browns can do some stuff.

They collectively have a middle of the pack kicking and punting game. Field position is paramount in Tecmo, so thats a demerit for em, but they don't get blown away like DEN/SEA who have super crappy punters.

Seems like a weird question to ask without answering it yourself first.

For tecmo, I generally dont make mistakes like stupid INTs. I generally feel the flow of the game pretty quick to see how I need to try and utilize the clock for an extra possession. I do a good job and intercepting the "unstoppable plays" enough to where you can't do it too many times in one drive. I run the ball well, tackle well, generally dont give up big plays..............I dont know, it just seems I am not only better at the actual usage of the buttons and making plays, but I also know how to set up extra possessions and call the right plays on defense giving me the best chance to stop people.

Hard question to answer. I guess the best answer I can give is that I have never met anyone in my league at the game (referring to tecmo 1 here, tecmo super bowl there is more room for getting lucky or unlucky). I obviously dont play it much these days, but did play a lot, and played a LOT of people throughout the years. Last time I played it seriously, maybe a year ago, I run into two people talking smack. Like, as in, there were serious they thought they were the two best players out there. Beat them both easily.

 
Oh, and pretty sure I am gonna buy that 2015 update Tecmo Super Bowl. Well worth the 60 bucks. Me and my brother already have a couple cases of beer lined up for it, and plan to take off work whenever it arrives.

 
Is their a setup that has two controllers and something you can plug into your tv and play any NES game? Just something simple. I don't want to hear about how you can download an emulator or whatever.

I just want two controllers and a device to plug into TV. Menu pops up. Alphabetical. I can pick out any NES game maybe even all the SNES games.

You could sell millions of those for $40-50.

They've been out for decades. They don't sell as well as you think. There are still millions of working NES' out there as well.

I'm a little late to this party by randomly finding this thread, but here's my 2 cents with Tecmo Bowl...  

One thing that I can honestly say is that I've used all the teams and also played against every team numerous times.  Played lots of mini tournaments with buddies where we'd seed the teams, have a draft and play it all out.  That gives you a good idea of how to operate with each team,and the best ways to stop a team...or at least slow down the really good ones.  Experience is key.  Having a solid of group of 4 different guys makes for good competition.  Everyone has a little different approach and you see different styles of offense/defense.  

Many times in the tournaments we played, we'd have bad teams playing good teams by chance.  You really learn to grind things out when you have a middle of the pack team like Seattle for example, trying to beat Chicago, or San Francisco.  Those un-even match-ups really helped sharpen our skills when we had an under dog team.

I've played a lot of Tecmo Bowl in my day, and I'm always looking for new challengers.  Haven't played much TSB though.  I've put on a handful of Tecmo and RBI Baseball tournaments in Omaha, NE which have a small entry fee($15) and places the top 4 into payouts.  1st usually gets $100 and some change.  Mainly caters to the casual gamer, but they always draws out a  few really serious/competitive players. 

Going forward I've been thinking about taking a cue from a guy who hosts RBI Baseball tournaments in Chicago.  16 players, $110 entry fee, and 1st place wins $850. His 6 or 7 tournaments he's had drew in people from all over the US, and some of the guys that flew were easily the best I had ever seen at RBI.

I've got some planning to do to make this a reality next spring.  It's  not hard to make some facebook ads and find 16-20 people here that will pay $15 bucks and burn up 3-4 hours on a Saturday.  Finding this level of commitment will be a tougher sell, but the payouts will be intriguing.

 If you think you're that good, this would be the event to prove it at, and win some legit cash.  I've been in talks with some good players I've met at events in Chicago, Columbus, and Houston that are open to coming to Omaha since the payout would be good.

I barely remember this thread, and can't remember if I mentioned it or not, but I was in Florida a few years ago.  They have one of the video game bars, I think it is called "Player One" or something like that.  Had I been there like two weeks later I could have entered a tecmo bowl (not sure if tecmo or super tecmo) tournament.  I think the entry was only something like 10 bucks due to some sort of payout rules, but man, that would have been great. 

I probably would have gotten beat by people who had spent the previous few months sharpening their skills whilst my knock off brand nintendo was collecting dust, but still woulda been a blast. 

As of right now, I am a retired tecmo champ.  Best of all time.  I am the Rocky of tecmo bowl, and none of you are Tommy Gun to be able to get me to fight again.  I am the Lonzo Ball of tecmo (wait, that's bad, nevermind). 

Dude, seriously though, all the people who grew up on nintendo are in what, their 30s and early 40s now?  There has got to be SOMEONE out there who cares enough and has enough resources to be able to put all the old school games online the way the Xbox and Playstation has done.  It might actually even make money.

Can you imagine being able to head to your man cave RIGHT NOW and go play someone who lives halfway across the country in a game or two of Tecmo Bowl?  Me and you could be playing right now!!!!!

I'll be hitting places like Kansas City, Chicago, St Louis, Denver, and Minneapolis with advertisements, to try to draw in people that could drive.  The Chicago RBI tourney always draws a lot of people that fly in.  There's always been legit good players who weren't there for the payout, but knew they would likely finish high and get something in return.  Some guys attended once just for the experience to see where they stacked up, but didn't return.  That was regardless of doing good and placing or poorly and being the 1st guy knocked out.  

A month back I drove out to Columbus, Ohio for a Tecmo Bowl tourney, which was quite a haul from Omaha.  I also had a buddy that lived out there, so no hotel for me.  I

The Nintendo switch I hear is supposed to support online play for SNES, but not 8-bit NES games.  There are some online leagues for TSB, and you can play some TB online as well.  The issue I've seen though is occasional lagginess....which makes kickoffs and field goals kind of dicey.

Kaillera is a program you want to look into. It's not java based, but it allows you to do online multiplayer in emulators.

 
On a side note for the proposed tournament, while the bracket is set up randomly, I'm going to have a provision that groups of 2 players attending will get seeded in opposite sides of the bracket.  If you come to this event(especially if you fly), the last thing you probably want to do is end up by chance playing your buddy in the 1st round.  If your faction is good, you and a friend would be set up to make deep runs before you could face each other. 

At the moment, the tourney has solid commits from a buddy of mine over in central Iowa, 2 guys from Canada (who ive faced in the past at a handful of events), and a guy from Central Nebraska is fairly interested.  Central Neb guy attended a tecmo tourney of mine in Omaha in the past, but was unable to be at the March 4th event this year.  

4.5 players out of 16 aint a  bad start with about 12 months to go.

-Would you be OK with taking Seattle as Player 1 and facing someone who has LA as Player 2?

-Against Indy with Dickerson, if you had Chicago, would Singletary be your primary(main) defender to use?

-Do you have a preferred play to primarily pick on defense when you are facing San Fran's offense?

-What's your primary defender and most common play to call when facing Minnesota's offense?

-Can you think of any teams that you could use John Offerdahl (Miami) as a primary defender against?  As in perhaps 40-50% of the time....

The defender I use is generally based on what play I picked.  I mean sure, each team has a primary guy to use, but many of them have multiple fast enough guys.

Regarding playing vs San Fran, if I pick the "unstoppable play" and they also pick it, my INT rate isn't terrible. 

It's hard to answer in much  more specific detail because I haven't player the original tecmo in a while.
