Ted Ginn Jr. (1 Viewer)

Heep

Footballguy
Has anyone had the chance to watch Ted Ginn Jr. the past 2 weeks? He had 5 catches for 49 yards against NE and now 7 catches for 55 yards against SD. I am just curious as to how he has looked. If he is being targeted enough to be catching 6 balls a game, he'd start hitting some starting lineups by the end of the year.

Also, how are they using him? I always thought he should be used the way NO uses Bush (without the carries obviously). He seems like he could be effective getting 5-8 short passes and seeing what he can do with the blocks and his speed alone. Let's hear what you guys have noticed...

He and Greg Camarillo are the ones to own. They are prolly owned in a scarce number of leagues as of right now but as you said will be rostered soon if they continue their pace of the last 2 weeks.

They look like they have been trying to get him involved. Most of the passes thrown his way were short passes on first or second down. I think he has saw 4 passes on third down the last two games. He's catching what they are throwing to him so I guess he's doing solid but he's not doing anything great either like breaking tackles or getting open deep. It's enough to make him a solid PPR performer but that looks like all but considering how I felt about him a few weeks ago it will do.

There has been a lot of talk about featuring him in the wildhog formation since he was apparently a highly regarded option QB in HS. I've read at least two different Miami papers which speculated this. I kind of expected they would utilize him in this role last week coming off the bye week which would have gave them a chance to install more looks in the wildhog. No such luck and while he seems suited for some work in that role I've also heard he's a slow learner so they may not want to overwhelm him.

Two negatives from last week. If you are in a league that rewards return yardage or return points the Dolphins gave him another crack at returning punts. I think he did it twice and did not do very well either time and they went back to Bess. The other negative relates to his avoidance of contact. He caught one pass on third and long and ran out of bounds a few yards short of the first down marker. I think in that case the high majority of WR's in the NFL would have put their head down and tried for the first down but he just ran out.

He has a good family

After today he is worth a grab for my bye week replacement of Steve Smith. Camarillo is available also and they have the Denver Broncos.

7 for 175? That's a pretty good day. So, was this a break out day or was this a squirrel finding a nut? I didn't see the game and would appreciate commentary from those who did.

If you go to Nfl.com you can find highlight clips. He looked big and fast. Is Champ still out?

He didn't look that impressive to me. He had a great game but it wasn't becuase he was exceptional.McGee tried to come back too early this week and was abused all game. Pennington kept picking on him while he was on the field.Ginn's first catch was impressive, but all the others were because McGee was giving him what seemed a 15 yard bump. McGee should not have been out there today and the Dolphins made us pay for it.

Thanks for the tip about the video highlights. After looking at Ginn's game I am impressed. The first one he had the CB beat but more impressively he came back to get the ball because it was underthrown and then jumped high to go up and get it. If Pennington hadn't underthrow him it would have been a TD.The second one was like Peterson below said--the CB was so far off it was an easy catch. But then the third one was a great run after the catch--the 63 yarder and he showed great speed and elusiveness. The fourth one he ran a good route and made the catch and then most impressively, took a tough hit without flinching. The fifth throw was a duck but he goes up high to get it, comes down and spins forward. The sixth he goes high for the catch and gets drilled by LB and holds onto the ball. What I saw in these plays was:a) Jumping abilityb) Toughnessc) speed d) good handsThis wasn't just an injured CB playing off on him.

Even if Ginn is truly coming into his own, the problem is that he may continue to post inconsistent production.

And that may not be a knock against him, but the fact that Chad is pretty heady back there and doesn't lock on one receiver. He takes what the defense gives to him, which often entails spreading the ball around to whoever is open.

Very nice assessment, I like the way you detailed this for those of us who have not seen the clip yet. Thank you!

He is returning kickoffs. Even if his receptions are inconsistent, the fact he can go 4-5 catches for 50 yards, makes him a must start in return leagues. If he goes off like today and/or gets a TD than its all gravy.

So who is the WR to own? Is it Camarillo or Ginn? Cammarillo has outscored Ginn in every week except this past week. Is Ginn taking over or was it just the mismatch with McGee?

I'm not sure that really matters, each will have his chances over the next few weeks, with games againstDenverSeattleOaklandNESt LouisBufSfkcJetsSeriously, could the schedule be ANY easier for Miami receivers going forward?? :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Ginn was always second in targets for 4 weeks prior to last sunday. He finally got more targets than Camarillo and he isn't exactly a home run hitter.

... he isn't exactly a home run hitter.
I am totally perplexed by this statement. Ginn is the very definition of a "home run hitter". He is incredibly fast, and has good field vision when he gets the ball. His problem has always been with his route running and polish as a receiver. He appears to be progressing in these areas and should pretty solidly command the WR1 numbers in Miami from here out.

I'd like to hear more input about this Ginn guy.

I have the #1 waiver priority in my league and I'm undecided whether I should use it on him or save it for later. Of course, I sat idle the last couple of weeks as guys like Bulger, Pennington, and Avery got snatched up by owners with a lesser ww ticket. Is Ginn a one-week wonder, or is he in position to start posting solid WR 3 numbers?

According to CBS the coachs have been talking positively about him all week.

I need a number 3 WR and would love to hear more about if this guy figures into the Dolphins plans the rest of the season.

I meant camarillo isn't a home run hitter

I own Camarillo now but no one has picked up Ginn yet. This is a difficult choice but like another poster mentioned they both could post decent numbers.

I picked him up. He is my #5 wr but who knows what may happen. He has talent just hasn't learned how to play with it up to this point. He has been in the league for a year and a half. Who knows, maybe he turns it on the second half.

This year with Pennington throwing the ball I suspect Camarillo is better one to have although the gap will be small the rest of the way. Next year (dynasty) Ginn is much better because he has the potential to be a really good Wr whereas Camarillo is what he is. I think that Camarillo is better suited to catching the kind of throws that Pennington makes; Ginn would do much better with a strong arm QB who get the ball deep. To do well with a short but accurate QB you have to be a consummate route runner. It looks like Ginn is improving in that area but I wouldn't cut Camarillo for Ginn yet in redraft. I think Camarillo will be more consistent this season.

I used my ww priority to grab Ginn now. I could've taken Camarillo but he doesn't possess Ginn's physical skills. Maybe I'm overreacting to a one-week fluke, but I was too hesistant when Avery was available and it cost me as he was picked up by another owner.

Camarillo is serviceable, but he's a JAG. He's been more consistent than Ginn, but Ginn's been getting more involved lately and being targeted by Pennington. He only has five fewer receptions and twenty fewer yards than Camarillo, and his return yardage (which counts in my league) is gravy.

Ginn will go back to being a nobody this week just like Mogan did last week. Those who passed on or missed out on Avery missed the p/u of the year. You are not going to catch lighting in a bottle with Ginn.

I'm not trying to be antagonistic, but can you elaborate why you think he's more Morgan and less Avery? The Dolphins invested a lot in Ginn so he'll continue to get opportunities if he progresses in his route-running. The tea leaves say he's gaining the trust of his quarterback and coach.
"He just keeps getting better and better," Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington said after the game. "You can just tell in his eyes when we're talking about routes that he's just very hungry. He wants to be the guy.""A lot of people were saying, 'Where's Ted? Where's Ted?'" Pennington said. "But with young receivers it just takes a while. You have to be patient."

Bump for some coachspeak from Sparano on Ginn:

(On what he was looking for out of Ted Ginn is his first practice after his seven catches for 175 yards performance) - "I think, from my standpoint, all I want to see is the guy do what he did to help himself get into that position. What Ted Ginn has done since the day that we got here is slowly, surely, the guy has gotten better and better. He's gone out there and worked his tail off every practice. So, we go out there today and that's exactly what I expected to see and that's what he did. He goes out today. He goes right back to work. He gets upset when he doesn't do something right. He's eager to know what he needs to do to get it right and I think that's a good sign. I think when they start coming up with all the answers, that's where you've got a problem. And right now, Ted is one of these guys that just wants more information. That's good."

So, Ginn and Morgan are flashes in the pan but Avery isn't.

Morgan had 1 good game. Ginn is averaging 7 targets a game and has had 7 catches 2 of the last 3 weeks. I don't deny the fact he could be a flash in the pan, but he was a top pick with talent. He could up following the same path as Roddy White last year. Middle of the year he suddenly got it and really started to put up consistent numbers. White was a waiver wire pickup in almost every league last year.

At least Avery has found the end zone a couple times. Ginn still doesn't have a TD. I think he's a decent pickup, but he did nothing all season until last week. I think it will be feast or famine for him with Pennington at QB.

True but he's also thrown fewer TD's than everyone on that list except Trent Edwards. He's definitely an above average QB, but only 7 passing TD's through 8 weeks is not good news for Ginn owners or any Miami WR. Chad's probably only going to pass for 7-10 more TD's for the rest of the year if he stays healthy. Ginn has to get at least a couple but good luck guessing which week it will happen. Ginn has been on my team all year and was on my bench last week. I'm sure if I start him now, he will revert back to 5-55 and no TD's.

That was Ginn's career game..Miami is a running team and will do it often against a weak second half sch.!

Have Ginn but also better so no need for me.

It's also worth noting that Miami has played some tough defenses vs. the TD pass (#16 Houston, #13 Baltimore, #7 Buffalo). But they have upcoming games against Denver (#28), Seattle (#26), New England (#25), St. Louis (#23) and San Francisco (#20), so Pennington's touchdown rate is likely to increase.

Perhaps another point to remember is that Chad didn't get to Miami until well into pre-season. Learning the system and his receivers has taken some time like it does for any QB in that situation. I think he may just be getting completely comfortable with everything now. This isn't to say he's going to put up Manning/Brees/Brady type numbers, but I think his TD numbers will improve and that Ginn will get the majority of those from here on out.

The light bulb could have very well gone on for Ginn and he all of the sudden gets it but I am very skeptical. Why just now? I think it was a maater of coverage which allowed him to have a huge game. There is a reason why Camarillo(sp) has been the #1 WR on the team. I don't exactly know what that reason is but I find it hard to have faith in Ginn. Now if he strings together games like Avery is doing then I am proven wrong. I would still much rather have a Matt Jones(barring suspension), Brandon Lloyd, or Reggie Brown for the rest of the season.

Targets:Week 1: Ginn 7, Camarillo 6

Week 2: Ginn 1, Camarillo 8

Week 3: Ginn 6, Camarillo 5

Week 5: Ginn 8, Camarillo 8

Week 6: Ginn 2, Camarillo 6

Week 7: Ginn 7, Camarillo 11

Week 8: Ginn 9, Camarillo 8

Seems more like a 1a and 1b situation to me.

How many wr's or any player for that matter steps right into the league and becomes a pro-bowler? There are reasons teams don't normally rely on rookies. There is a reason fantasy football players often refer to the 2nd year or 3rd year breakout for wr's. They need to adjust to the speed of the game, offensive terminologies and systems, etc. Not only that, but when Ginn was drafted everyone acknowledge he was raw and was a project. You don't give up on a top 10 pick a year and a half after he was drafted. Personally, I would never have Reggie Brown as my #5 wr over Ginn. Ginn has a much higher celing than Brown.

Champ Bailey is listed as out on MFL. With the Denver pass-D already ranked 28th, it looks like a good start for Ginn. Also, Miami has the 6th ranked passing offense in the NFL. So they want to be a running team, but the pass is what is working.

I hope you are meaning from a fantasy standpoint only? As for a real QB and his value, Pennington is clearly below average. As for Ginn, the guy has shown excellent hands and excellent speed. His route running is getting better, but because of Chad's inability to get the ball downfield, in time, the type of receiver Ginn is lends to a bad matchup with Chad's ability. Chad is getting yards because the Dolphins have been behind a lot

Pennington has passed for 867 yards and 4 TDs when the Dolphins are ahead or tied, but only 843 yards and 3 TDs when the Dolphins are behind.Next time, please check your facts before making statements like that.

Besides, FF points for playing from behind count the same as playing tied or ahead.

As I expected. Ginn goes back to nobody status and screws up along the way!
